Parties Plotting To Bribe INEC Officials – Jega by Johnnyessence(m): 7:47am On Jan 13, 2015 |
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday accused political parties in the country of budgeting funds solely to bribe its officials during elections instead of directing such money to voter education. The was made known by INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, in Abuja at a forum organised by the African Policy Research Institute, APRI, with the theme: “Policy as Tool for Political Inclusion in Nigeria.” He lamented that failure of political parties in carrying out their responsibility to carryout voter education had led to the high rate of invalid votes recorded during elections amongst other contentious issues. Jega said that the Commission was monitoring and taking note of candidates who have exceeded the official spending limits for campaigns, adding that the commission will expose such politicians at the appropriate time. He said: “The issue of money politics is a worrying situation. We know that Nigerians expect us to publish the names of such politicians immediately but as a commission, we are taking note of such politicians and we will expose them at the appropriate time. “It is evidence-based that political parties don’t budget money for voter education, but they budget money to bribe INEC officials,” Jega stated. He disclosed that INEC had received assistance from some donor agencies and would deploy the resources into enhancing voter education and he explained that the commission had taken cognizance of all strata of society in carrying out its voter sensitisation. “In a few days, we will increase our sensitisation programmes in the media to 30 or 40 percent. For those of you who have been seeing our programmes on television, you will realise that we have included a sign interpreter,” he said. According to him, if political parties had carried out adequate voter sensitisation, the number of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs that are lying at the local government areas would have been collected by their owners. “As at now, 72 percent of PVCs have been distributed. About 15,567,219 PVCs are at the local governments awaiting collection. But everybody blames INEC. But in reality, the political parties need the voters to obtain these PVCs because that is what they need to vote,” Jega said. The INEC boss further expressed optimism that with the step taken by the commission to decentralise the distribution of PVCs to ward levels, all registered voters would get their cards before the month ends. For places where the PVCs have not been produced, Jega said that steps had been taken to ensure that they were produced and distributed before the end of the month. Earlier, Co-founder and Executive Director of APRI, Ambassador Sunday Dogonyaro, explained that the forum is an independent platform created to provide the space for policymakers, parliamentarians, researchers, political parties, civil societies, the media, bilateral and multilateral agencies, local communities amongst others to exchange ideas, knowledge and information in the policy formation process. nigerianpilot.com/parties-plotting-bribe-inec-officials-jega/ |
