Poetry can never be more important than science. Poetry has its importance, yes- scientific theories are better explained with poetic writing or speech. eg the theory of evolution as "nature's guide to change".

However, without science, you wouldn't be able have a computer that would have a browser in which you would log on to nairaland and tell us this.

Science is for discovering the world, poetry is for eloquently articulating the discoveries of the world.

Without poetry, the world would be boring but without science, we all would be ignorant. I'd rather be bored than ignorant

It's just for relaxing your mind or making you think deep...Unfortunately, poetry can't solve any of the world's problem...just like music, you can use poems to call people's attention to that particular thing...and That's all...

Another thing is...poetry doesn't have a universal language... If you translate it from one language to another, it looses it's form and meaning...

And some poems are damn hard to decipher

Meanwhile science is a broad subject...I don't even need to elucidate... you can see the wonders of science all around you...

So poetry is just another form of entertainment...
Science is serious business

Poetry is more than entertainment though it is not a major problem solver but it relieves the mind of the writer and probably the reader!! But in comparison to science, I don't think there is any comparison!! It is miles apart!! Science is knowledge!! Poetry is Art!!

Please! Poetry is just sentimental drivel with no practical applications to the world, Journalism is more important and science has taken the world much further than either of them.

Yes, for third world countries to develop we need more science than arts. Art subjects are good but they are not very relevant for the development of a third world country like Nigeria. Yes, science can solve the poverty problem of a nation not art.

As someone told you already, poetry like every art is just for entertainment. Whereas science provide real solutions for human survival. Without science you'll probably be dead by now.

Even though I have a thing for poems myself, I can't help but laugh at your submission that poetry is more important than science. Poetry is just a genre of literature while science is all encompassing. The impact of Computer Science alone dwarfs everything poetry has done for humanity. How much more medicine, mathematics, physics, chemistry etc. After salvation in Christ, science is the next best thing that has happened to humanity. No contest about that. You know it deep down within yourself.

Music is just one of the thing I do cause I'm someone that's interested in all fields of knowledge. I think science cause I have a science background. Even my music is influenced by science.
Only science will set Africa free.

Anybody saying arts is more important than science don't know what science is all about.

I woke up this beautiful morning to the sound of my favourite poetic music at the moment- All Of Me by John Legend. I must say that how we feel towards poetry is subjective. Personally, I don't do “scientific drugs” poetry,arts, music and nature does it for me. In poetry and arts my mind draws inspiration, motivation,imagination and creativity. Most times, I get total strangers speak to me about life challenges they maybe currently going through and I've never lacked inspiration and motivation to fire them on. I've become a better human thanks to poetry, arts with good music. The only downside is that you always crave time to be all alone to appreciate the unknown but not hidden-poetry.

You all should know our personal opinion is never standard fact! Its just what it is, our opinion. It has no empirical backing whatsoever. Instead of saying he wrote rubbish, just take it as his opinion.

@Texanomaly...It is common knowledge that POETS don't live their POEMS. I for one can write a sizzling love poem, sitting lone and grumpy in my room That Hitler writes, only points to a certain level of intelligence which manifested in horrible dimensions.

BTW Laykorn, I don't know what the tussle is all about, saying poetry is more important than Science is like saying the mouth is more important than the nose. I am a Physicist who loves and know Physics and Mathematics yet Poetry comes naturally to me. I did not learn poetry or how to write them; I just write. IMO, no subject is more important than the other. They are parts of a whole.

Eloquent thought brought to life in the form of prose and poetry is held to high esteem in my culture, and I doubly value it's beauty and significance in my personal life, but poetry/art can never surpass science for me.

Food for the mind and soul, both are necessary. Let's leave it at that.
