Cameroon's army has freed 24 hostages kidnapped during a cross-border attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters based in neighbouring Nigeria, government officials said.

In their latest cross-border raid on Sunday, the Nigeria-based Boko Haram fighters seized at least 80 people in northern Cameroon, most of them women and children.

Cameroon Information Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakari told Al Jazeera that the Cameroon army was able to free at least 24 of the hostages on Monday.

"They were freed as defence forces pursued the attackers who were heading back to Nigeria," defence ministry spokesman Colonel Didier Badjeck said.

The attack on Sunday occurred in the village of Mabass, in the Far North region, Bakary said. He said 80 houses were destroyed.

"We are dealing with barbaric people, lawless people," Bakary said. "Nothing can prevent them from assassinating."

The raid came a day after neighbouring Chad deployed troops to combat Boko Haram in Cameroon and Nigeria, as part of a regional bid to combat the group.

Boko Haram after capturing 84 Cameroonians was quick to drop off 24 because of over loading, but when they captured well over 200 Nigerian girls in Chibok, the never was a problem with over loading. I know a sick head like you would rather see Boko Haram succeed than being flushed out by Cameroonian soldiers.. While every major channel from Aljazeera to CNN and BBC is reporting that Cameroonian soldiers have freed hostages madman eejo is reporting they were dropped off! Pride goes before a fall. Boko Haram is no longer a Nigerian issue..!

The truth is bitter and my news is accurate boko haram had about 70,000 fighters and lots of cash in dollars they attack in hundreds so my friend shut up i have seen many wars and lost so many friends to this jihadist the plain truth we need international help on boko haram
