I don't even engage them. I just take a walk or sleep.

And the funny thing is my aunt kept telling me...'make friends...make friends...you never can tell who has connections...' And I'm like...'yea right...how am I supposed to be friends with someone I have very little interest in common with undecided'

There is no family in US. You need to see. I felt very bad at some point, I was sleeping my uncle was at work, got back in the morning took just 2hrs nap and he's off to work. He couldn't even drop me off, had to call a cab man for me. I understand better, when you call him, he'll tell you I can't dash you money, get a business send me the cost and I'll foot it and take down never to respond if you fail.

I wanted to use his phone to call my friends in Nigeria, omo the guy cap me well. Say if I don't delete all those crap numbers he just might drop me off the road to find my way

I tell you. That's how people work here around the clock, to be able to survive and pay bills. As some people would say, in America you work only to pay bills. Also, one has to be very careful here. I have a smiliar story. When I came here newly, one particular afternoon I took my aunt's home phone and dialled a friend in Canada. After the first ring and no answer, I wanted to redial his number. I see something on the phone wey resemble redial to me, not knowing that it was the shortcut to 911 my aunt saved in case of emergency cheesy...nna...I press the button o...only to hear...'This is 911 how may I help you?' Chei. Police kwa? shocked. How police take enta dis matter now? shocked I cut the phone immediately, na so the police woman call me back immediately talk say I call am say wetin dey happen, I tell am say no wahala dey say na mistake I make call their line. The woman talk say dem go still come my house make sure say everything dey ok. Less than 5 minutes later, I heard knocks on the door. Cold chills ran down my body. This thing wey I don dey watch for hollywood movies since don dey happen real life. cry I opened the door to see 2 police cars outside, 1 in front and the other for back up. I gently told the asiatic-american male police officer in my thick Nigerian accent then grin that everything was ok that the call was only a mistake. And then they drove away. They made sure they came around to check that everything was ok. True patriotism of the cops.

Nna, na that day I sabi say dis country no be joke at all. I fear o, I no go lie you.

Hehehehe.....how I have missed this thread! Interesting things have been happening....@Profojah, and Bigfrancis21....it's OK!! One of the beautiful part of life is the ability to disagree with each other. It's all good! You have both exercised your human rights, so it's time for the exchange of words to cease and move on.

@exxy, we can only advise you from what we THINK is the best...it might work for you, it might not. My advise is stay in school, cz that's I'd do in your situation. As for your uncle, I don't blame him. Our experiences color our decisions in life, so he might have made the suggestion based on his experiences. Anyways, I pray everything works out for you!

@jenns, this your post na wa.

@Nabylet, are you trying to apply for bachelors? I'm sure a lot of schools are still taking applications for fall. What is your current major? It will determine how this process will be for you. Goodluck!

Slimmy,

BigFrancis and Profojah are both right. It is just a matter of both having their own views and/or opinions. See, in America, your best friend in class would be the one to tackle you/ ask many questions or disagree with your points during class presentations. One may begin to wonder if such friend is a "hater". At work, when you give presentations, your close co-worker would be the one to tackle you the most or ask questions, and/or disagree with your findings. That doesn't mean he/she hates you; he is only tying to pass across a point too and ask questions and disagree when necessary. I have since realized that that is the best way to learn in life. We all can't think the same and face one direction. I honestly think we should encourage such meaningful and reasonable discussions devoid of insults here. Personally, I like it because I learn more when people disagree with me.

I have said this so many times on here. I will repeat it again. Do not come to America with the hope that things would sort itself out. At the minimum, have your tuition for 2 semesters (unless you have a scholarship) and not just come here hoping that one family member will house you or cater for you. That won't happen.

In agreement with BigFrancis, I have noticed that those who have relatives in the U.S are the ones always complaining. Why? Because they are expecting too much from their uncles or aunts and get disappointed when that doesn't happen. Many of us here came to America without knowing anybody. I slept in the hotel for several days when I newly came before I got an apartment of my own. I knew what I was coming to do in America and was well prepared and wasn't expecting help from anybody. As bitter as this might sound, having enough money is the way. You don't need anyone.

Also, some people come here and study some courses that are not in high demand. I am always an advocate of STEM, any day, any time. I got a job because I was a STEM major. Just yesterday, Kpolli announced here that he got a job too in the West Coast - most likely in the Silicon Valley or the Bay Area, because that is where things happen in the IT world. Although, there are some people who finished school and still haven't gotten their dream jobs, but they are still managing some where, any how because they went to school. Some even went further to pursue a PhD. A good Nigerian-American girl would even be ready to marry you if she knows you have an advanced degree. That would make your searching easier as well.

Overall, bring enough money when coming here and complete your studies. If you have no money, then be prepared for the worst and don't blame any uncle or aunty for that. Everyone is on their own in America.

I am not disputing the both of them, but I don't like biased arguments. If you have your point, say it and there is no need talking like you got issues with the person. It's very easy to know a razz person who just got opportunity.

No matter how hard they try, they still ooze.
Profojah is right in his own opinion. But bigfrancis didn't like the straight judgement hearing from one side. For me, quickly judging one without hearing from both side is shallow and I don't support it.

US will give you some sweet bitter experience that would change your orientation and what you think is evil will suddenly become right.

Let's just say now I have 2 accents - an 'official accent' for my work place and interaction with Americans and my dear Nigerian accent for within my Nigerian circle of family and friends.

I had a different view while in Nigeria. But now, I understand better. I had to even call some and apologise. It was indeed a selfish conclusion on my part.

You made a point. We come here having lots of expectations from relatives living here. I will admit I had such expectations initially when I came here newly but I learned very fast. And yes, everyone is on their own in America. The laws also help to enforce this individuality. In a country where one can easily get into trouble for another person's mistake or oversight, people are conditioned to mind their business and live on their own with very little involvement with other people except someone you know very well.

Slimmy, in a situation where you have only one side giving us the details (especially when we have no access to the uncle), then we have no choice than to interpret, and advice based on whatever he says, with the assumption that he is saying the truth. That BigFrancis doesn't like Ojah's straight judgment doesn't discredit his points. It is evident that Profojah doesn't like BigFrancis judgment too? Every one is entitled to his/her own opinion. We are all here to learn.
