Recently, I was having a conversation with a former colleague who just got a lecturing job in a university. I asked how he's coping being a chronic Stammerer and how the students react in his class. i was pained when he said he was not born a stammerer but a lefty, and that stammering was the effect when in early years his parents (educated) tried to correct his left-handedness coz to them its an anomaly. I thought i should share on NL.

While I was growing up i noticed my tendency to be ambidextrous, my parents told me they tried correcting the 'anomaly' because according to them i started out as a lefty.
As I grew much more older it seems they really didn't record much success. (I write with my right). albeit, this caused some conflict in my motor skills/orientation and balancing.
I find it difficult to perform some tasks with my right hand. I can't use a razor or knife with my righthand... NEVER! the thing won't just cut. I can only tap/snap my left fingers to make sound (taka sufe ). I couldn't play the guitar. the list is endless...

I later was going to learn from another friend who has a sinistral(leftied) brother having difficulties with gear manipulation -alas! its the reason i spent 12 years to learn driving (mentioned on another thread).
While i was in the uni, a lady stopped greeting me for two sessions only for her to reveal my offence later that she had waved at me and i responded with a left hand gesture (which for me was done in subconscious).
What is responsible for the conflict in motor orientation and why are parents displaying rigid mentalities?

its a bad one meeen. really made me a slow leaner and a slow doer(i do every ting like its nor gonna get dark).

In my case, one of my nursery school teachers tried to change me and my parents went to school to warn her and so she stopped. So each class I went to, my mum always told the teachers not to try to change me or there'd be hell to pay. My mum just made sure that on my part I gave elders things with my right hand always. I had to learn to use a regular pair of scissors with my right hand which was awkward at first but now has now become second nature so much so that I can't even use a pair of scissors for lefties. I have a brother who is always fascinated watching me turn food/stew with my left hand when cooking.

Am a left handed person and almost everyday am grateful to my parents for not forcing me to change it.although we do have problems with things like using a scissors(as someone mentioned above),using some pens like ball point,learning the whole concept of driving, and using some instruments.

I read somewhere that the right side of our brains controls the left side of our body and the left side of our brain controls the right side of our body.so when we are forced to change from left hand to right hand,our body gets difficulties interpreting the message,just open the above link,I think it would help

Unlike my colleague's parents, mine didn't put so much effort inorder to change me and that actually is a plus. While i'm leftied, i still can use both hands for some tasks e.g Stew stirring and Scissor handling, however some are best done with left and some other with my right. if i ever have to carry two loads, the heavier always goes to my left.

I am a Leftie by nature but I was also forced to switch. It didn't affect me tho.. I can write with my right hand only but when it comes to things like playing futbol, sweeping, my left side shows itself. I guess I was able to blend the two sides together in a weird way

Wow thanx a lot for that link. I had serious bed wetting issues growing up. Who would have known twas caused by the switch. As an adult my handwriting is fugly( d fugliest in my family) and I get mentally tired easily. Concentrating on one specific thing is soo hard and dis is why I love doing things hapharzadly. The link Is really an eye opener. Am so very grateful

Yeah I think so,although I know it would be hard learning it now but in doing so,it would make your body go back and work in the normal way it was designed,just my opinion thou n I love your signature

yea,had issues concentrating and when i focus, i overdo it. i have since worked on that.
