steveibk: Hey. I'm a lawyer too. In the same boat with you (Kinda). From my research, it appears that you can't just apply for PR, nominating Barrister or Solicitor from off-shore. First and foremost, you have to be physically present in Australia. It's not an express requirement but it's just a logical inference that I drew. From the information on the website of LPAB (Legal Profession Admission Board) http://www.lpab.justice.nsw.gov.au/, it seems that you will have to submit evidence of your Nigerian LLB and Call to Bar which will be assessed and you will be instructed on further law courses to study in an Australian academic institution. Amongst other things, you must demonstrate a very, very high level of competence in the English Language. Now, that is just phase one. Here is phase two: You have to enrol in a course in either the University of Technology, Sydney or the College of Law which I believe are the two designated schools that specialise in teaching foreign admitted lawyers the courses they are required to undertake according to their individual LPAB assessments. The University of Technology, Sydney offers a Graduate Diploma in Australian Law which is tailored to meet the LPAB requirements. It's an expensive course and lasts for one year but thankfully, can be used to meet the two year study requirement....that's if you are like me and is already studying a one year LLM in Australia. Phase three: After completing the necessary courses, for example, the Graduate Certificate in Australian Law from UTS, then you need to further enrol in what they call Practical Legal Training. Here in Nigeria, the close equivalent is Court and Chamber Attachment during Law School. The University of Technology , Sydney, quite conveniently (to both us and UTS) also offers a PLT course that is much cheaper and lasts for about six months. After the PLT, wait for it.... You'll be admitted to the Australian Bar!! You can dust your wig and gown and start prepping for your first appearance in court. I admit, it's a lengthy process but at least its clearly defined and simple, unlike the process in say, Canada. I believe that there might be a work around to some of those steps if you desperately want to cut costs. You can, for example, study all by yourself and then write the LPAB exams, assuming you don't need any course you undertake in Australia to factor in when your stay in Australia is being computed (Two year rule). That's it. 1 Like |

s it compulsory one takes the yellow fever vaccine, before getting the card...especially if one has been vaccinated in the past 2yrs and brings evidence? Must the yellow fever vaccine be from ports health, or will any govt hospital certificate do? The reason I ask is because the vaccine is contra-indicated for breastfeeding mothers. |
Re: General Australian Visa Enquiries by FutureDon(m): 6:51am On Jan 24, 2015 |
bossladyMo: Not compulsory, if you tender a proof at Port Health, you'll be issued a yellow fever card without having to take the vaccine again. I met a guy who was in this same situation (and got his card without vaccine) when I went to Port Health, however, I'm not sure how long ago he had been vaccinated. Not sure if Govt. Hospitals issue the new card though.... |

Pls Bosslady and the PR experts in the house. I have a cousin that intends to migrate to Australia. She is a nurse (Registered nurse, midwifery school and now rounding up her university nursing degree- all in Nigeria). She has been working in a Federal hospital for four years now. Please how can she go about the whole processes in a step-by-step manner. I told her to be preparing for her ielts exam now. What next after the test? Thanks for your usual patriotism. |
Re: General Australian Visa Enquiries by Nobody: 9:45am On Jan 24, 2015 |
oladunwo: You assess your skills with the relevant accoubting body. I would advise you contact prechear , as he got his visa by nominating accounting. Me MA ke, I'm a young lady ooo lol. Prechear |
Re: General Australian Visa Enquiries by Nobody: 9:59am On Jan 24, 2015 |
kolawolead: My transcript was released 2 months after I lodged with VETASSESS, but I still got my assessment at the 3 month allocated processing time...so I ended up waiting for 3months in total, instead of waiting an extra 2 months for transcript before lodging. So the choice is yours. But if you are sure your complete transcript will be released in 2 months or less, I would advise you go ahead and lodge. |
