Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), will not be featuring in the presidential debate organised by the Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria (BON). According Garba Shehu, directorate of media and publicity of the APC presidential campaign organisation, the boycott is due to the “unhidden bias and campaign of calumny by some key organisers of the programme, against the corporate political interest of the party (APC) and its candidates”.

Shehu argued that the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) powered debate was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset, by wearing the toga of government control, especially being composed mainly of agencies and allies of the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration.

“A salutary inspection of the composition of NEGD brings into focus the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), National Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Africa Independent Television (AIT, owned by a PDP chieftain),” he said.

“And going by the avalanche of inflammatory statements, misinformation and blatant lies being propagated by some of these media against our party and candidates contrary to the Koffi Annan-brokered Abuja Peace Accord, and the failure of these aggressors to desist and apologise, have left the APC campaign with no option than to steer clear of any premeditated smear campaign that could be inimical to our prospective electoral success.”

He urged the public not to see the APc boycott as disrespect for Nigerian voters or an alibi for the party to dodge public scrutiny, but to view it as an honourable right not to consent to any activity that could distract, demean, denigrate or derail the fast-moving train of the party.

He described APC as a party of progressive intellectuals, genuine technocrats, successful businessmen and women, and most of all eminent and courteous people of honour who would never condescend to the level of sadistic gutter propaganda, all in the name of political exigency and crass opportunism.

He also noted that many government-controlled media have clipped the wings of APC promotional advertisements on one excuse on the other, and until a court upturned their decision recently, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) shut down some telecom portals for soliciting legitimate campaign funds from members of the public for APC.

“Aside, elements close to sitting President Goodluck Jonathan have commissioned series of derogatory and death threat advertorials against the person, family and associates of the opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari, to which the APC had sent letters of complaint to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of State Security, Advertisers Practitioners of Nigeria (APCON), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the erring media that published or aired such offensive adverts or documentaries,” he said.

“None of our letters of protest has been attended to by the authorities. So whatever the incumbent president wants to do with the instrument of state to harass members of the opposition into humiliating submission would not work. The APC/Buhari campaign is now a people’s movement. The more they try to rubbish it, the more popular we are with the populace.

“We are not shadow-chasers or moonwalkers. The APC is concerned mainly with the lack of unity and security in Nigeria; plus the growing decimation of lives, property and territory of our great country due to preventable insurgency; the slumbering economy; decaying educational system; absence of jobs; poor public health; and the cancerous institutionalisation of corruption in our national life. You can’t fool the people all the time. Nigerians will vote out their oppressors come February 14.”

Lol
This man should just do us all a favour and step down. If you can't debate with the so-called 'clueless' GEJ, how do you intend to tackle the intellectually-tasking and complex demands of running a democratic country?

If he suspects any form of connivance, he should suggest that a more trusted body handle the debates. APC and co have been asking the PDP to forget the certificate issue and face real matters. Now the time to face real matters is upon us and they're looking for an escape route.

Not suprised .

He knows people won't understand 70% of what he will say hence the fear .

If he doesn't trust that body then both parties should put head together and bring up another instead of making excuses.

The truth of the matter is this, Buhari can't stand Patience Jonathan in a debate talk more of GEJ himself, He'll be mauled. grin Hehehehehehehehehehehehe....
An illiterate is an illiterate no matter what, I met an APC fan saying "GMB till sambo debates with osibanjo" grin, Now the guy didn't even talk about the main contender (Buhari ) because he knows What's up...

His supporters will back him on this, cause they don't want further disgrace after the "...I will stabilize oil price" incident.

IMAGINE Buhari ADDRESSING THE U.N GENERAL ASSEMBLY. **heart attack**

I am 100% in support of this move by Buhari.

The Chairman, Board of trustees of NEDG is also the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority, Mr. Sola Omole

You only need to watch a little bit of NTA recently to know their level of bias and partisanism

APC are not attending your useless debate if it can't be organised by a neutral body.

How on earth would you say someone should take an uneducated 72 years old man that has been out of government for over 30 years to be his president?

Well, if you may care to know, Buhari won't rule with decrees and this time around it will be laws as entrenched in the constitution. So the era of waking up and enacting a decree is over. Looking at the people bankrolling his campaign and the party, they are a collection of aggrieved congregational congress according to Soludo. These guys are angry because, they have not being able to lay their hands on our common wealth.

Come to think of it Nigerians ,can Buhari cope with the complexities of modern leadership? We are in a situation in Nigeria where the President outsourced his responsibilities because he isn't capable and we are clamouring for someone that is even super clueless. Yes, he has no integrity........Well, time will tell. Fighting corruption in Nigeria is like fighting unemployment benefit and immigration issues in the UK.

Dont believe all those propaganda they all want in on the action , them wan chop too at our detriment, for those who care to know it takes faith, understanding plus patience in the system to experience growth and to experience the growth we must avoid the path of confrontation, a bitter ,2019 would be the best time for us to evaluate ourselves and make a peaceful hitch free change ,you can't take power from the ss without confrontation because the north would be getting it through violence as Nigerians we need to let them know that violence is not the way to get power because if it's that way don't expect a stable government from pa Buhari this is democracy we either choose to move forward or remain stagnant. The world is watching us and our stupidity.

For those that are married would you chase your wife out of the house because she's not perfect just to marry another one who you think is perfect when you know that no human is perfect who's fooling who?

I support the reasons for shunning this biased debate. GEJ must have received the questions already, PDP are very desperate right now with their N21b.
BON, NTA, FRCN and AIT are all strong members of the NERD and also strongly allied to the incumbent GEJ which will end come FeBuhari14 with or without a debate.

After all Obama won the election after messing up in his own debate.
We don't want debate, we want change in Nigeria. #SaiBuhari

I am very much in support of Buhari boycotting the silly debates organised by the highly biased NEDG/AIT/BON/NTA/FRCN

The reasons are too obvious to be ignored....

Let Channels/Civic /Human Rights organizations organise another debate and i am sure GMB will attend

This would be a bad move on Buhari's part. Although the debate organizers are members of govt parastatals, the debate panel comprises seasoned journalists who have built stellar reputations over a period of time.
Buhari should have used the opportunity provided by the debate to, once and for all, clear all misconceptions about him and expatiate on his manifesto.

Please help us answer this question.

Will GEJ attend a debate organized by sahara reporters, the nation newspaper and premium times?

If your answer is no. Then shut up. Thank you

Where is that egift picture comment of GEJ and debates?

Let me go fish it out possibly.

EDIT: Back in 2011........

egift:
Unlike what happened below in 2011, Nigerians must make sure that Jonathan do not abscond this time around

Jonathan ran away from the presidential debate for not getting EXPO (the questions before the Debate)

He had a very shameful counter debate with dbanj (who was not contesting the 2011 election)

What Jonathan did with Dbanj was a big disgrace, so he went ahead to debate himself alone on National TV

For the love of God.

The change messiahs that won't debate. tongue

David Axelrod is a very clever man. He knows if he puts that donkey in front of Nigerians on live TV that he will immediately be campaigning for Jonathan. grin

Which change? They should keep the change!

Nigerians are not that naive. The man has already gone senile and he will just be dropping bomb after bomb after torpedo eg osunbade. Jonathan will coast to victory if they bring this knocked engine out. wink

They've packaged him like arewa customs and featured him like Gidi cars. But they won't let us test drive him. Please never you buy what the salesman won't allow you to test drive. angry

Buhari was an IBB experiment. He failed woefully the first time. He is being used as a drone, controlled by darker cabals than Yaradua era. angry

A vote for Buhari is a vote for your enslavement to the cabal.
