Mcgill university or michigan state university. Which will you take? Forget the online rankings because they are sometimes sentimental oh. Some unis rank high because of the alumnis they produced , graduate programs they offer, their prestige and fame internationally (looking at cambridge and oxford among few others. Hey! Mcgill had great people like lord rutherford of our high school atomic chemistry who discovered alpha and beta rays). Some of the schools ranked high are not even suited for undergrad program but graduate programs. Some may not have enough international community which can make you look like a minority, some are for geniuses. Believe you me: not everyone is a conc genius. So if you find yourself there, frustration may set in and you wish you were in a tough Nigerian uni solving their unending mathematics. So all things boils down to compatibility. Why would someone drop out of a uni like U of toronto when he had all the finances he needed. Why would an alumni give a very bad review of his school? That is because he never fitted in. Round peg in a square whole. (I hope I quoted it right@benji). So choose and pray wisely. Goodluck to all my fellow ambitious dreamers. Though we dream big, our dreams always comes to reality. Keep on dreaming wisely. Thats the spirit. 1 Like |

Gospel367:i would pick american schools any day any time, cos they have a diversified input level, and you know the more diversified you are the more variously knowledgable you are,the greater the depth of your research as you have access to the richest pool of researchers, canadian schools are rating high anyway, according to one reknowned website Uof T and Mc gill were placed at the 20th and 21st positions respectively, for teaching methodologies at undergraduate level Canadian universities are doing great alongside their american competitors, they emphasize on high grades, and less on graduate programs,i think it is good if your UG education is good enough to launch you into the fray of intellectual competition, in terms of ranking MSU rates close to 180th place, and according to my finding in regards to my discussion with chrisval, they have larger engineering classes, they admitted over a 1000 Engineering students, and the of international students representation there is good enough to be reckoned with,i dont know abt you but some pple prefer relatively smaller classes, and that is more effective in my opinion, also with Uof T according an interview graced by one of their Engineering professors, they admit close to 800 engine students, but they are usually split into 8 sections for effective management, also you would offer one Engineering course in your first year which will properly introduce you to Engineering creativity and design,so if u be sharp guy u go don start dey design car before you go start your majors, you go use your brain,he no be so u want,i will keep streaming in my updates,God Bless Nairaland. 1 Like |

Gospel367:thank you for the honour, you are right about the ranking being based on alumni, not just anway, the index also includes level of research activities, organization, teaching methodologies and methods,i for instance i prefer an environment that will enable me to think and make, here i think often, but no materials to make, this gives me a lot of frustration,i am not bothered about the As as it doesnt really tell ur level of intelligence,it only tells ur level of awareness and retentive memory, people of high IQs care less abt As,they care more about that thing that makes your theory wrong,so if u ask them to explain and not define, you would open your mouth wide agape at their wit,you cannot make an omelette wothout breaking eggs.God Bless Nigeria 2 Likes |

benji93:So you prefer american uni na? For someone like who is more interested in being creative, creating things and being independent than degree or where it was gotten from (although i value good grades oh for plan B or prerequisites to greater plans), which would you recommend for me? Canadian uni or american uni? Mcgill or msu? Besides, am going for undergrad studies only unless or untill better things comes my way. God willing. 1 Like |

Gospel367:America,MSU because of its location, you have bigger and wider opportunities bro,as per companies particularly the advantage of the old boy's network if you dont want to pursue postgraduate,America na the land of opportunities no doubt, even as you school, you would be allowed to do paid jobs, whilst this is limited in canada.America gives everybody equal opportunities as far as you are a go to,nd you can also consider stipends when you begin work after graduation,no body pays like those people, naija to get supernetwork for that place he n be small ooo,but if you get Mcgill instead of MSU no problem,it is rated above Msu,meaning yo will survive every hurdle, you have opportunities.God bless NIgeria,we are in. |

Seriously you guys are funny! You couldn't afford University in Nigeria, you get one abroad and you are concerned with Ranking....... MSU or McGill or Duke or Arizona or Berkeley. All are great schools, be more concerned about where you as a person would fit in. That's my take! 2 Likes |

chrisviral:RANKING? I cant remember anybody saying he was interested in ranking. As a matter of fact, i would accept any of the mcf unis even if it is in kenya. I asked my question incase I or someone gets an offer from both canadian and american uni? Like I said earlier, this is when you should think about which one you will fit in wella. Once again, am not interested in rankings even for a day. Not only because I cant afford schooling in Nigeria but also because my interest when given the opportunity to choose between 2 or more options, is compatibility. Ben understood where I was headed unto and gave me his replies which I appreciate. |

Gospel367: Sorry, it's all good, whichever you finally select, I wish you all the best! About MSU? You never actually got back to us about USAP and whether or not you finally sat for SAT or TOEFL... Were you admitted to MSU too? |
Re: Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, Enter Here by chrisviral(m): 7:50am On Feb 02, 2015 |
lambotee: As a graduate student, I think you need either GMAT or GRE to apply for graduate programs (M.sc) at American Universities depending on which program you are pursuing, and a TOEFL too. Just do a normal search on the universities website and find out what requirement they need for your preferred Major, coz whether MCF or NO MCF, all incoming applicants are evaluated for admission via same criteria. You Cousin needs SAT and/or TOEFL to apply to all American Universities and None of the above to apply to Canadian Universities. 1 Like |

chrisviral:if you are given the choice to choose between water and milk, which one will you opt for(you have a reason for your choice but it doesn't make my own choice substandard if different,as they are both well suited for different situations, the guy gave his parameters, and u are to make a case if you are spoilt for choices, which is possible, highly ranked schools boast of highly prestigious alumni, which opens a lot of opportunities for you(old boys' connection),obviously a famished man won't refuse a slice of bread because cheese was not added,he would hold unto the bread tightly, when he is done with consumption, afterwards he would belch and say oh i wished i had that bread with some butter with margarine or butter, this guy wants this place to be lively, allow him i pray you.I rest my case.No man is a fountain of knowledge,God bless Nairaland |

Re: Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, Enter Here by chrisviral(m): 9:25am On Feb 02, 2015 |
Nad95: Yes I believe they are have minimum requirement (which ofcourse circulates around getting great grades and great SAT score) although the private peers (Stanford and Duke) will like to say they have a "holistic review" system, where not only your grades define your admission criteria. And Yes you need an international passport for sit for SAT and TOEFL! |
