Most people that has commented on this thread are just not matured! What has origin got to do with wat he said instead of you to read it and make reasonable contributions, you are acting silly!

I agree with him on banning rice and tomatoes! But before doing that he should make sure the local farmers are fully supported and funded.. I just believe in this man.
Most nigerians has no discipline, that is how corruption starts. If corruption could be curb to the minimal, most of these things he mentioned could be achieved!

One Nigeria, great nation, great people!

In a plain term, Buhari is a joker, an AGBAYA, a daft, and unintelligent.
Buhari escaped presidential debates from different organisers only to organise town hall meetings to be attended by only the cult members of APC alone who are equally unintelligent like him.
Read the second paragraph of this write up and you will realise that the attendants were made up of APC members alone.
Is Buhari vying to be a president of APC members alone? For crying out loud, do you expect any APC cultist to probe or ask Buhari any sensitive question that bothers on national issues or the state of the economy? How can you be and examiner and the student at the same time. Where is the like of Tunde Bakare who would run his mouth to say all the rubbish? What does he have to say on this? Obviously, Buhari is out to take us back to the 80s. Come to think of it, if the APC does not have confidence in him, why did they showcase him for public ridicule?

On a serious note:
This dude is just agreeing with GEJ policy on everything except that he does not know that massive investment is needed by the government in any sector before you start banning. Ban this ban that! Please do not ban orijin oh! that is on a lighter note anyway.

Buhari just confirmed that GEJ is on the right track, the only difference is that Buhari does not know that change is a gradual thing...you do not ban tomato paste when you do not have enough investments in producing them locally.

OBJ banned rice without having a local modern rice mill and what that singular policy did was to increase corruption because people started smuggling and bribing custom officials and we ended up buying rice for 15k a bag.

Now we have local rice mills and the GEJ presidency has said that it will ban rice importation this year.

There was corruption in the power sector, GEJ has killed corruption in that sector by privatizing it and GMB just confirmed it.

This dude should come to a debate...let us listen to him.

When OBJ banned textile materials without revamping the textile industry, it caused inflation in that sector and corruption was rife.

You do not ban bicycle without having working steel plants...it does not happen anywhere in the sane world.

One thing about GEJ presidency is that he does not care about being politically correct...he just keeps doing what is right like removing subsidy to kill corruption in the sector and make the local production of refined fuel competitive.
...love informed people like you enlightening some nairalanders. frustration has really lead people to stop thinking str8.

It's impossible that Nigeria would be importing tomatoe, that I do not believe when we have it in abundance especially in the north. If you talk of rice I agree, but not tomatoes. Moreover how possible is it to import fresh tomatoes, won't they get rotten before the arrive?

You agree with him on banning rice because like him, you are oblivious of the facts on ground. You just sit in your arm chair comment carelessly. How much is a bag of rice now, even with significant increase in our local production and the fact that government had to increase the tarrif on imported rice. Compare the price to when it was 100 percent importation and government was collecting moderate tariff. That should tell you something if you have any deductive ability to reason. There is a reason why local producers can't meet up ith local production or even compete with imported brands:
1. Countries like Brazil, India, Malaysia, China not to talk of the West greatly subsidize Agriculture. That way, they can take their product to many African countries and out compete even with high tariffs. Local production will be discouraged and as farmers and agricultural practitioners wont be able to compete with superior brands that have heavily been subsidized already.

2. If Nigeria wants to develop the Agric sector, it has to be the way the present government is handling it, use technology, encourage young graduates, qualified practitioners to invest in it, commercialize agriculture and most importantly, choose aspect of the sector that can be greatly subsidized and sustained. The reality is that no matter what Nigeria does, we can not compete with foreign brands in a free and fair market at least for now. It has to be developed and given systematic structuring as the current minister is doing. This is not a case of ban this and that when you do not have the capacity to produce it. But many of you are superficial and very petty, you wont understand a thing about effective policy as long as you are blinded by irresponsible politicking and propaganda.

Try to be reasonable for once!
I said i support him on banning the importation of this goods but the local farmers must be encouraged first and how can this be achieved.
You are so biased and irrational!
who told you local farmers can't compete with imported brands. stop all this your nonsense and be reasonable for once..
nigeria has one of the best citizens ever and with proper motivation and encouragement, we can be the best!
the technology you talk about, if local farmers are well funded with improved technology provided to them, you will see the difference in two to three years. don't just sit in your house and think Nigerians can't compete with other developed nations. it requires great thinking and time. if we keep importing all these all our life, with time local foods will become extinct. With your mindset, am sure we won't be able achieve anything ourselves. must we depend on other nations or must we follow the footsteps of other nations.. let us think and achieve things ourselves. Nigeria has the potential of being the best out of all nations. we just need the right set of leaders at the helm of affairs..

Banning the importation of some products to enhance local production is good provided you build up local production capacity to a respectable level before the ban. If the local production proves overtly inadequate, it will create a supply vacuum which will lead to a spike in the activities of smugglers.

While you are busy wishing it and talking all fine and dandy, the reality is that Nigeria does not have the competitive edge to stand shoulder to shoulder with foreign brands, that is the fact. I am sure you still eat imported frozen livestock, yet you have the option of buying locally grown chicken that are like twice the cost of the original. In the international market, African farmers are still clamoring for foreign governments especially those of the WEST to stop heavily subsidizing Agricultural production as it puts them in a disadvantaged position. Do you know how many billions of dollars that go into the subsidization of wheat in America alone? They are number one in Flour production for a reason, this is a country that produce more than 35% of the world's flour. It is not by being hardworking my guy, there is no country that do not have hard working people, we are talking about smart government policy and not the archaic nonsense Buharis and his bunch of political hangers-on are regurgitating since time immemorial.

Don't deceive yourself and think you are deceiving others, it is all about tribe, region and religion. Only such considerations will make a medicre like Buhari have a chance of consideration when talking about leadership in this country. He was chosen over way better candidates because according to the Yorubas he can deliver Northern votes while they Yoruba bother about SW votes and hope that power surreptitiously goes back to the SW, we are not fools. If it was about records, Buhari is a mediocre and a failure, he has nothing he can boast of as a leader that he did better than an average Jonathan, that is the truth. He has been in leadership way more times than Jonathan, let him point his achievement and leave all taht granding.

The ban if not preceded with massive investment in the production of rice and tomato in very sufficient quantities will lead to scarcity of the products and an increase in price.

The economic hardship of the ordinary nigerian would blow out of proportion followed with starvation and economic hermorhage as a result of smuggling of the banned goods.
No mention was made of the ban in importation of palm oil which is presently being imported with subsidy of N 24th paid for the import, this is a clear case flawed , lopsided economic policy .

A great economic policy rather than ban would massively encourage the local production of rice and tomato , increase tariff on the import of the same while with improved infrastructure and financial incentives encourage the local producers of rice and tomatoes to export their products

Oh! You aint seen nuffin yet, ere buhari steps in, we re-usher in the infamous buhari military era queues for staples like tootpaste and even toiletries, after 30years one would have thought buhari would have learned if not how to do certain things, how not to do certain things undecided but you really can't teach an old dog new tricks can you? this may be subtle suggestion by buari, but before implementation, adequate provision must have been put in place that would alleviate food scarcity in the midst of nigeria. on this note, nigeria must have been producing gigantic farm products before banning the importation of rice e.t.c
