For the past 2 or 3 months i've bin consuming rice produced by our local farmers. Our farmers are already producing enough for the country, this government has really tried but too much propaganda wont allow us face reality and encourage the government, most of us are used to castigating the government based on hear-say without knowing what is really happening.
Newkidoo:

Try to be reasonable for once!
I said i support him on banning the importation of this goods but the local farmers must be encouraged first and how can this be achieved.
You are so biased and irrational!
who told you local farmers can't compete with imported brands. stop all this your nonsense and be reasonable for once..
nigeria has one of the best citizens ever and with proper motivation and encouragement, we can be the best!
the technology you talk about, if local farmers are well funded with improved technology provided to them, you will see the difference in two to three years. don't just sit in your house and think Nigerians can't compete with other developed nations. it requires great thinking and time. if we keep importing all these all our life, with time local foods will become extinct. With your mindset, am sure we won't be able achieve anything ourselves. must we depend on other nations or must we follow the footsteps of other nations.. let us think and achieve things ourselves. Nigeria has the potential of being the best out of all nations. we just need the right set of leaders at the helm of affairs..

On a serious note:
This dude is just agreeing with GEJ policy on everything except that he does not know that massive investment is needed by the government in any sector before you start banning. Ban this ban that! Please do not ban orijin oh! that is on a lighter note anyway.

Buhari just confirmed that GEJ is on the right track, the only difference is that Buhari does not know that change is a gradual thing...you do not ban tomato paste when you do not have enough investments in producing them locally.

OBJ banned rice without having a local modern rice mill and what that singular policy did was to increase corruption because people started smuggling and bribing custom officials and we ended up buying rice for 15k a bag.

Now we have local rice mills and the GEJ presidency has said that it will ban rice importation this year.

There was corruption in the power sector, GEJ has killed corruption in that sector by privatizing it and GMB just confirmed it.

This dude should come to a debate...let us listen to him.

When OBJ banned textile materials without revamping the textile industry, it caused inflation in that sector and corruption was rife.

You do not ban bicycle without having working steel plants...it does not happen anywhere in the sane world.

One thing about GEJ presidency is that he does not care about being politically correct...he just keeps doing what is right like removing subsidy to kill corruption in the sector and make the local production of refined fuel competitive.

Oh I disagree with you

You can ban anything without planning ahead to cover shortfalls if senility has crept into your brain and you still fancy yourself as a military dictator ruling with decrees and edicts grin

It was OBJ policy and GEJ changed it.There was long list of items that you could not import into Nigeria including 2nd hand cloths,it was OBJ that did all that,Fruit juice were only allowed in drums and can only be repackaged in Nigeria. This is to create jobs. Bicycles and textiles were banned.GEJ disbanded it and allowed the in to win support from south east Nigeria the main importers of used clothing, textiles etc.Dont change the story .If he had continued we would have been self sufficient in fruit juice at least

OBJ was semi-clueless because he banned without enabling the local industries to be able to cover for shortfalls in supply and that is why GEJ undid the ban, before you ban anything, you should have planned ahead what impact that ban would have and how you can forestall it, OBJ didn't do that, GEJ is doing that, Mr. Uber clueless buhari wants to start his own arbitrary bans without any afterthought whatsoever expecting the universe to take care of unforeseen circumstances, well if he wins, me I dey go join customs make I hammer die grin smugglers go hear wheeeen cheesy

no dear. I mean he should make sure we can produce enough for d country before putting d ban in place.

You will never be able to produce enough so long as cheap imports are allowed. To make it more economically attractive for local production, your economy must be protected and a ban or very high tax are the ways to ensure that. Once your then have enough local producers and prices have normalised, you will then allow imports to ensure quality is kept up.

A case in point is the Fruit Juice industry. Prior to the ban on importation of fruit juices into the country, only Fumman was producing fruit juice locally and it was struggling badly, even Coca Cola was importing ist Five Alive brand. However, once the ban was put in place, things changed almost overnight, many juice producers are now available .

Ceteris paribus on availability of local producers prior to ban will never happen, so a policy to push/facilitate it is what is required.

Imagine you asking the question "why jonathan has not banned the importation of rice since 2010 ?" Now let me ask you or rather you should ask yourself, if he did that, would that have stopped the smuggling in of rice through the borders? Would that have increased the local production of rice in Nigeria? Would that have reduced or increased the price of rice irrespective of the origin whether local or imported in Nigeria given the fact that rice is a consumers staple in Nigeria?
Think thoroughly before you comment sometimes and don't let yourself be blinded by passion i.e hate for one person and love for another, it blinds you from objectivity and I would like to believe you're a smart person capable of objectivity.

It was in Jonathans regime that I came to hear of ofada rice and it is Nigerian produced, and also the most expensive and that is for your quetion as to what jonathan has done for rice production and that is just the one example I'm familiar with and am sure there are others.

In related news, am sure you heard that Jonathan commissioned a rice mill and processing plant sometime last week (I can't remember where exactly) and he made the comment that he and his family only eat Nigerian rice and encouraged other people to do the same

Gej had banned rice importation and this brought about rise in the smuggle of it. This is because Nigeria at that time could not produce half of the volume of rice it needed. By this smuggling, Nigeria was also losing revenue. So Gej revisited the ban. He met with the major importers and millers and an agreement was reached on the volume they should import and produce. While they build their rice mills. There was also a deadline as to when they will completely stop importation 2015!
this has been carefully monitored and followed and to this end many rice mills have been set up in Nigeria. You are a witness. Unlike other years, How Much Did A Bag Of Rice Cost Last December? #8500 unlike previous years. This shows that we are getting there with our independence on the volume of rice needed.
So the ban of rice for example is not what you wake up and implement or your citizens will suffer. GEJ has take the right step and procedure to do that and now at the due time, some else who probably dint know plans and fundamental steps should be taken comes and want to steal into someone else's hardwork.

Abeg stop talking like a saddist if it were Jonathan dt said this, u will support it. The thing is that Nigerians need serious laws to start something. Eg befor Obj banned importation of fruit juice, there was no single producer of juice in Nigeria but now there are several producers of juice. The reason Jona bans are not yielding result is because he has not been able to man up and totally ban those tins. Instead, he banned them partially. Totally banning importation will automatically stimulate companies to start producing to meet the needed consumption capacity.
See your mouth like automatically stimulate

Is it made or assembled in Nigeria?
Or you want to pretend you don't know that cars are being made and assembled here in Nigeria?
You refused to factor consumers choice and taste especially for that brand with the tag "imported" abi?
Neither did you factor the rise in smuggling to meet up with that demand
Did it ever occur to you that before you ban anything, you must be able to mass produce it and make that product attractive enough as a substitute to the consumers?

One fact is clear concerning the upcoming election, people's minds are made up already.
Many, in APC states like myself, have a better understanding of APC propaganda cos we can compare their lofty electioneering promises with the realities of the years gone by. I think it's same with those under PDP governors.
Appearing active online doesn't necessarily translate to victory on ground (this, we should have learnt from experience).
Going to the church yesterday, I was amazed by the number of women I saw strolling out of the compound of the PDP leader in my hometown. I had previously thought the town was on lock-down for the APC, especially as the current member representing us in the Federal House of Representatives hails from there, and had been reportedly engaged in massive disbursements of funds and materials to garner support for his reelection bid.
Personally, I made up my mind long ago to cast my vote for Goodluck - not because I have anything to do with the PDP, but because I still think he's a better option (while being far from perfect). Many may insult me for my decision, but why are certain humans like that? (What makes you think your choice MUST be accepted by all others?)
On the Buhari documentary, it shows how much we have lost conscious thinking to dismiss it all with a wave of hand. I haven't watched the documentary even once, but the facts analysed there can't be much different from WHAT we have learnt over the years - a man who applied flock herding to humans, who perceptively jailed SELECTED politicians without regards to the law courts while allowing a SELECT FEW(probably on ethnocentric considerations) to enjoy relative freedom, a man who repressed the Press and deprived the citizens of their fundamental human rights, etc. Could the documentary be worse than that? Probably, there would be reference to Idiagbon's little son attending pilgrimage with his dad and so on... Can we call any of these lies? Haven't we heard them repeatedly over the years? Many are simply not thinking. We are acting like those animals in George Orwell's classic, programmed to and constantly crying: "four legs good, two legs bad!" Until the next programming of "four legs good, two legs better!" Can't we do better than that?
I look at both major parties in the country today and see interest-motivated gatherings of birds of same feathers. Which APC Gov can claim to have a clean bill of health, corruption wise? Which of those in the PDP can claim same? Have the repeated cries on the other by those on one part of the divide blinded our eyes to their obvious flaws?
For those quick to declare "may your life be run the way Jonathan is running this country," I return it that "may yours be run the way Oshiomhole has been running Edo state."
