The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has threatened to rather resign his appointment than postpone the scheduled February general elections. He said nobody's demand, including that of the National Council of States (NCS), or any other institution, will make INEC to postpone the February general elections as scheduled. The source further said that Jega confided in them that he will appeal even a court order on this issue, and that only a Supreme Court order will make him shift ground.

A highly reliable source close to the INEC Chairman who pleaded anonymity told Universal Reporters that Prof. Jega told a group of close friends to which he belongs this morning that he would would rather resign his appointment and save his personal and professional integrity as an academic than be humiliated by the act of postponing the elections. The INEC Chairman was said to have dropped this hint against the backdrop of stories making rounds in the media that the NCS may advise against holding the February election, using the inexcusable excuse of poor distribution of PVCs. He said in spite of all the efforts put by his commission and with over 80% of PVCs made available, it will be dishonest for anybody to use this exercise to call for the postponement of the elections. Our source said Jega told them that if postponement is forced on the commission, then the only honourable option open to him is to resign.

The source concluded by saying that it is Jega's view both as a professor of Political Science and his experience as INEC's Chairman that any postponement of the election would cause more harm to the country than good.

The issue of postponing the February elections has been making waves for sometime now, and it took a new dimension when the National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, joined the fray in London last week.

Professor Jega understands the implication of postponing the election.

Right now, over 65% of the Nigerian electorate have collected their PVCs. There are still 4 more days for the others to do so. There is no evidence to suggest that the postponement of the election to will significantly increase the collection of PVCs. Some people do not intend to vote, others might be incapacitated or have an apathy to the Nigerian electoral process.

The benchmark for a legitimate electoral participation rate (60%) has been exceeded. Postponing the election will only lead to more uncertainty and possibly anarchy.

The election has to take place on February 14th.

This is what I call a responsible leader. Standing firmly for what you believe and not minding whose ox is gored. I only hope the elections will not be postponed.

I don't see what's commendable here. If the postponement will douse tensions, why not do it? It's not like you're asked to rig elections or contravene the constitution.

Douse tensions? How?

Only the conduct of a free and fair election will douse tensions. He was given a mandate and dates set years ago, why should the election be postponed less than 2 weeks to the date?

Stinks to high heavens!

Stupîd source. What is so controversial about this that Jega cannot come out to say himself.
That source doesn't exist.

The postponement is not dousing any tension, so no need. The only reason Jonathan and his allies want this Election postponed is that he knows he would lose if it's conducted on the scheduled FeBuhari 14th. The reality on the ground shows that GMB would massively humiliate the Incumbent.

What an upright man, man of honour unlike Maurice Iwu the former chairman of INEC. Jona want to postpone the elections for two reasons
To send Jega to compulsory leave & install a puppet since he ain't dancing to their tune.
To have enough time to strategized & buy the electorates with money.
All these will fail because we are going to the poll on FEBUHARI 14 & vote the General.

Surely, postponement will not douse any tension, infact,it will lead to unnecessary anxiety which will not be good for us as a nation.Generalising the hitches in the distribution of PVC is unfair to INEC,because, like my state Edo state most people have collected theirs with ease. Let's do the election who ever wins should be declared winner so that we can move on as a nation.

I neither trust the source nor the story itself.
I also do not read Jega's resolve as some posters are submitting here because besides the now open moves by the PDP to postpone the elections using several guises,Attahiru Mega has still not come out categorically to restate the elections would hold as scheduled. He has only been saying INEC is on tract and leaving others determined to ensure d elections hold as scheduled to infer same from that.
So don't be surprised to hear tomorrow that INEC has shifted this elections. In this season of desperate moves to stop Nigeria from turning a new leaf from the monsters that have held the nation hostage this past 5yrs,no one can be trusted, particularly an INEC chairman who had refused to address a press conference to restate the sacrosancy of Feb 14.
