To remain neutral is to distance oneself from issues especially in the public space. The institution of the church is bigger than anyone of these actors and no one must be seen to be 'representing it' for or against matters like Nigerian politics which is far smaller.

What these pastors and other church leaders should do at a time like this when their congregations and the public ask questions on politics and governance is to take them through scripture and teach them what should drive their choices and the implications of such then leave it to the Spirit of God who 'searches the heart' and 'knows the minds' of these candidates to influence their votes.

By openly taking sides with one party candidate or the other they are not only misleading their congregation by sidelining God's influence (because God alone should make the most important decisions in a man's life), but also proving that they are afterall not really leading men to God by building their faiths, but seeking to influence their minds for their personal profit. I'm afraid that is idolatory.

Men of God should steer clear of politics. Of all people they should know that between Buhari and Jonathan or any other candidate they and no other man can read the minds of these people and know for sure that one outcome will be better than the other. What the vast majority of even well meaning Nigerians do by voting is taking a risk, speculating, gambling. It may work. It may not. Only God knows what will work. That is why they should stay out of God's way.
