I see this as very true... When you hear former, it means former. A former dictator who never gave room for the type of corruption we are experiencing now in Nigeria. He commissioned refineries in the midst of other good works. We are in war with insurgency as well, it sure takes more than a man in a hat to fight these guyz.. . We really need to vote wisely and embrace the Change around.

Yes, I agree with you. It was too critical on GMB why just giving GEJ'S failure an ordinary stern look.

From available records, GMB's economic records were not as bad as they painted it. The report is obviously very biased and flawed.

I agree with you totally, they said "he refused to devalue the naira in the face of trade deficit" because it was IMF recommended and GMB refused, so in their thinking dat was a destructive economic policy

Sai Buhari!

I'm not a fan of Buhari though! I just crave change.

What is special about the piece? It is still the usual rant about boko haram. Buhari who was unhappy when the Nigerian army was dealing with them brutally is now the one promising to fight them.
Very ironic.

Not only the insecurity. There is the case of corruption too. Abi you no see that one ni?

The whole world is tired of Mr. Clueless' Cluelessness.

Buhari's regime wasn't perfect but was far more effective. Whatever mistakes he made was out of being over ambitious to rescue Nigeria and not for any personal gains.

As a democratic president, he cannot be as brutish as a military head of state with all the checks and balances in place. And once corruption is cut to the barest level we will soon begin to see progress in every aspect of our economy.

A very apt analysis of Buhari's regime summarized in a sentence. And I'd rather have an overly passionate leader than a nonchalant one.

What problem van Buhari beat his chest and say he solved in his tenure?
Their criticism of Mr. President is heavily centered around boko haram, how is Buhari (who insisted that Boko haram members should be pampered like ND militants and that killing them is anti-north) supposed to e the solution?

Is he any different from a man who stated categorically that Boko Haram is his own brothers.

Interesting!!!
Given that the opinion is predicated on the possibility that the daft old pensioner can deal with Boko Haram, one can say its conclusion is erroneous since Buhari has said our army should not fight the sharia proponents.

Buhari faults crackdown on Boko Haram

Presidential candidate for the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 Presidential election, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has frowned on the emergency rule in parts of the North. He alleged that innocent civilians were being killed in the states.

Buhari speaking during a Liberty FM Hausa Service Programme, Guest of the Week, on Sunday in Kaduna said that Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished unlike the “special treatment” given to the Niger Delta militants by the Federal Government.

SOMETIMES there are no good options. Nigerians must pick between the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, who has proved an utter failure, and the opposition leader, Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator with blood on his hands (see article). The candidates stand as symbols of a broken political system that makes all Nigeria’s problems even more intractable.

Mr Jonathan has shown little willingness to tackle endemic corruption. When the governor of the central bank reported that $20 billion had been stolen, his reward was to be sacked.

Quick to offer condolences to France after the attack on Charlie Hedbo, Mr Jonathan waited almost two weeks before speaking up about a Boko Haram attack that killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of his compatriots.

Mr Buhari, is an ex-general who, three decades ago, came to power in a coup. His rule was nasty, brutish and mercifully short. Declaring a “war against indiscipline”, he ordered whip-wielding soldiers to ensure that Nigerians formed orderly queues. His economics, known as Buharism, was destructive. Instead of letting the currency depreciate in the face of a trade deficit, he tried to fix prices and ban “unnecessary” imports. He expelled 700,000 migrants in the delusion that this would create jobs for Nigerians. He banned political meetings and free speech. He detained thousands, used secret tribunals and executed people for crimes that were not capital offences.

..between the Devil and the deep blue sea, if you ask me!

Nigeria definitely deserves more than GEJ and GMB.

I've got my PVC and I sure must vote...for change, of course.

So, it's GMB, come February 14th!

One reason is that, in a country where ministers routinely wear wristwatches worth many times their annual salary, Mr Buhari is a sandal-wearing ascetic with a record of fighting corruption.

That comment above from the economist just goes to show indeed stealing is not corruption . Come February 14, bye bye to jati jati of pdp

The economist correspondent in Nigeria, if they have one, will have a front seat come May 2015 during Jonathan's second inauguration.

If all they have, is the invisible $20B, and boko haram. Then Jonathan has done very well.

EVERYBODY IS ENTITLED TO HIS OPINION. THAT SAID, THEIR OPINION DOES NOT CHANGE ANYTHING. BUT LET ME REMIND YOU ALL NAIRALANDERS, IF BUHARI COMES TO POWER, ANY NEGATIVE CRITICISM OR POST AGAINST HIM IN ANY BLOG WOULD BE MET BY JAILING WITHOUT TRIAL, AND BAN OF THE BLOGS,[IF HE CAN].

THERE IS NO PRIZE THAT IS TOO MUCH FOR FREEDOM.

The GEJites will say The Economist is an arm of APC.

Don't mind them. A large part of our country is about to go and the over 200 Chibok girls are still missing and somebody is here canvasing for GEJ. I don't mind withdrawing my support for Buhari after his first term if he refuses to perform. Lets just regain our country first.. Jonathan wont do it, even if you give him another 20 years.
