Osun Holds Referendum On Proposed Councils On Monday by Johnnyessence(m): 5:21am On Feb 06, 2015
The Osun Independent Electoral Commission has
said it will conduct a referendum on the creation
of proposed additional local government
development areas in the state.
The Chairman of OSIEC, Chief Segun Oladitan,
said this at a press conference in Osogbo on
Thursday.
Osun State has 30 local governments and
Governor Rauf Aregbesola had in December 2013
written a letter to the House of Assembly seeking
approval for the creation of 27 additional local
council development areas.
Based on the approval, the state electoral body
would organise the referendum which would be
open to everybody from 18 years and above.
Oladitan, who said the exercise would hold
between 8am and 1pm, urged everybody who
had attained the age of 18 years to come to the
polling units with any means of identification to
ascertain their age.
Oladitan said, “The conduct of the referendum is
consequent upon the instrument of the state
House of Assembly empowering the commission
to carry out the exercise. The referendum is in
compliance with the requirement of the 1999
Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as
amended in Section 8, sub section 3b.
“The exercise is a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ vote. It is equally
important for me to stress that the exercise is
unconnected with politics or political parties. It
is purely a constitutional requirement in ensuring
that governance is brought to the people at the
grassroots.”
He called on traditional rulers in all communities
who wanted a new council created in their areas
to mobilise their people to go to existing polling
units in their areas to vote YES or No.
He said that the decision of the two thirds of
those who participated in the exercise in any of
the communities would determine if a new LCDA
would be created or not. www.punchng.com/news/osun-holds-referendum-on-proposed-councils-on-monday/

30 Local Government Areas
27 Local Council Development Areas

The essence of the creation of more councils is to bring government closer to the people at the grassroots. There would be a reduction in the emolument of the current LGAs.

Development begins with proper restructuring.
