INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega (Peoples Daily NG)
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to postpone the 2015 General Elections.

INEC reached the decision at a stakeholders meeting held today, February 7. INEC had earlier announced that it would reach a final decision today.

An official close to the commission told The Associated Press that INEC had decided to postpone the election for six weeks due to the threat posed by Boko Haram.

The source added that the poll shift would allow extra time for a newly constituted multinational force to secure the North-East which is currently being plagued by Boko Haram attacks.

It would also enable the commission continue distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) to citizens to prevent mass disenfranchisement.

INEC is expected to make an official announcement of the postponement at a news conference later in the day.

The initial call for the postponement of the polls was made by National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki but it was voted against by the Council of State.

US Secretary of State, John Kerry also warned Nigeria against postponing the polls.

Story developing.

There will be no significant change in the preparedness of INEC after 6 weeks. There will also not be an end to Boko Haram in 6 weeks to guarantee all IDP's vote in their homes. Lastly, those who believe that they have been disenfrachised since they probably registered far away from their present location will still not collect their PVC or be allowed to vote with TVC except if they decide to travel to where they registered.

What then is the point for shifting the polls other than total waste of Nigeria's resources and more elaborate rigging plans.

Marchuari! Very funny indeed.

As a matter of fact the news is not correct and its confirmed to be a rumour based on strong indications. A press briefing is about to be made by INEC. They are in a meeting at the moment.

Whether they postponed the election by 12 months GMB will still win. So no problem we will wait.

the election that brought in GEJ was held in April 2011 and inbetween that election INEC stopped House of Assembly elections. Now my point is this; if INEC postpones this election even till April, those who are yet to collect their PVC will go to collect them. Those who relocated will also be given chance to transfer to their new location even IDPs can also seek transfer too.

Postponing elections if for genuine reasons is in itself not a problem as such, the truth is that Nigerians simply don't trust this government!
