Tottenham's Lennon is on the verge of signing for Everton on loan until the end of the season after snubbing a transfer to Stoke City. He would be Roberto Martinez's biggest deadline day scoop and could go straight into the Toffees squad for Saturday's clash at Goodison Park. And Thompson insists Lennon has a point to prove heading into the clash. "It's a good signing for Everton, especially with the derby coming on Saturday," Thompson told Sky Sports News HQ . "He needed to get away, but there is always the question with him of does he have the final delivery?" Lennon was all set to join Hull a few days ago but the Humberside club revealed earlier today they had no chance of singing for England international. His odds plummeted on his signing for Everton this afternoon and he is now reportedly heading to Liverpool to agree terms with the Toffees. |

Match preview : Premier League Preview: Everton vs Liverpool User Rating: / 1 Poor Best RATE < Prev Next > Liverpool will travel to Goodison Park to take on arch rivals Everton in what would be the 224th Merseyside Derby this coming Saturday. The Reds have improved a lot since the turn of the year, after starting off in a mediocre way, following the departure of Luis Suarez. Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently 7th in the league, having notched up 38 points from 23 games. The club are just 5 points adrift of Manchester United (3rd) and only 4 points away from Southampton (4th), which means that the club are still in the race for a finish in the top 4 this season. On the other hand, Everton have not been their usual self, with Roberto Martinez’s side failing to impress with their performances this season. At present, the Toffees are 12th in the league, having scored only 26 points from 23 games. Though they are unlikely to be pulled into the relegation dogfight, they are far from finishing anywhere near the European places this season. Just like every other Merseyside derby, this one too is expected to be a heated affair. The last time these two sides met in the league was in September, when the game ended 1-1 with Phil Jagielka equalising for Everton deep in injury time. Everton: Everton did manage to scrape through with a 1-0 away win over Crystal Palace in their last league match, but they have not even been close to the standards that they set last season. Their win over the Eagles was only their second since November last year, and that is counting their performance in all competitions. In the league, since beating West Ham United on November 22nd, Martinez’s men have managed to take just 9 points from a possible 33! Nevertheless, derby day is always an extra serious affair for clubs, and Everton will try to make sure that they give their fans a reason to cheer by edging past their local rivals. Romelu Lukaku is the club’s top scorer thus far this season, having netted 10 times in all competitions, from a rather extravagant 31 games. Liverpool: Liverpool, on the other hand, have had a much better season so far, when compared with the Toffees. The absence of Daniel Sturridge due to injury, and the departure of Luis Suarez in the summer, did make it difficult to continue from where they had left off last year and with the club’s summer signings flopping too, their position in the league this season is largely due to the performances of the young duo of Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. The side has shown a gradual improvement in their performances, so much so that they have been unbeaten in their last 6 matches in the league, taking 16 points from a possible 18! And now, with the return of Sturridge, the side look even more formidable, and are one of the top contenders for European places this season. Form Guide: Everton (WDLDD): 31st Jan, 2015: Crystal Palace 0-1 Everton (Barclays Premier League) 20th Jan, 2015: Everton 0-0 West Brom (Barclays Premier League) 14th Jan, 2015: West Ham (9) 2 - 2 ( Everton (FA Cup 3rd round replay) 10th Jan, 2015: Everton 1-1 Man City (Barclays Premier League) 7th Jan, 2015: Everton 1-1 West Ham (FA Cup 3rd round) Liverpool (WWLDD): 5th Feb, 2015: Bolton 1-2 Liverpool (FA Cup 4th round replay) 31st Jan, 2015: Liverpool 2-0 West Ham (Barclays Premier League) 27th Jan, 2015: Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool (Capital One Cup, semis-2nd leg) 24th Jan, 2015: Liverpool 0-0 Bolton (FA Cup 4th round) 20th Jan, 2015: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea (Capital One Cup, semis-1st leg) Likely XIs: Everton (4-2-3-1): Robles, Coleman, Stones, Jagielka, Baines, McCarthy/Besic, Barry, McGeady, Naismith, Mirallas, Lukaku The Toffees will have James McCarthy available for selection following his recuperation from his hamstring injury. It will be interesting to see whether he does start the game with him, or decides to go along with Muhamed Besic. Also, Martinez has new signing Aaron Lennon available for the match, but he may not provide him with his debut by starting him in such a high-profile encounter and putting him under immense pressure. Having said that, it is quite possible that the boss may bring on the player later in the game. Additionally, the boss has also revealed that Tim Howard has been advised to rest for another week before making a comeback, which means that Joel Robles will continue to keep goal for the hosts. Liverpool (3-4-1-2): Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Henderson, Gerrard, Moreno, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge The Reds are without Lazar Markovic, with the player being out with a back injury, which means the manager will miss his pace on one of the wings. However, it is believed that Rodgers may finally provide star forward Daniel Sturridge with a chance to start the game, forming a partnership with Raheem Sterling in the attacking third. Philippe Coutinho is expected to continue in his playmaking role, and the return of Sturridge could mean either a change in formation back to what worked so well last year, or Sterling going out wide. Meanwhile, Liverpool are expected to start with 3 defenders at the back – a formation which has so far gone down well with the team. Match Prediction: Everton may be going through a mediocre patch, but games against Liverpool always manage to elicit the best out of the team. Hence, it is expected that the Toffees would provide genuine competition to the Reds. However, Brendan Rodgers’ side are more composed and stable right now, which means that they will be tough opponents to deal with, despite playing away from home. For the hosts, Romelu Lukaku is capable of springing surprises, and the Liverpool defenders will need to keep him in check. On the other hand, the trio of Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho are known for their prowess in the attacking third, and fans would hope that they work their magic for the Reds. Score Prediction: Everton 1-2 Liverpool http://www.thesportscampus.com/2015020540432/english-premiership/everton-vs-liverpool-preview This is Merseyside derby************** |

Everton and Liverpool contest the 224th Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, live on Saturday Night Football . Roberto Martinez’s team have bounced back from a three-game losing streak over the Christmas period and are now unbeaten in five games (excluding penalty shootouts) in all competitions, albeit four of those games have ended in draws. They come into this game on the back of a gritty 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace, where they kept just their fifth clean sheet of the season. Liverpool have lost only one of their last 16 Merseyside derbies in the Premier League (W8 D7 L1) and head to their neighbours in good form, having lost just one of their last 13 matches in all competitions. Philippe Coutinho earned rave reviews from his manager Brendan Rodgers after scoring a fantastic winner against Bolton in the FA Cup and his flourishing attacking partnership with Raheem Sterling is an area Everton will need to watch closely. Team News Martinez expects James McCarthy to be available for the clash and is also ready to hand Aaron Lennon an Everton debut in the game following his arrival on loan from Tottenham for the rest of the season. However, the game at Goodison Park looks to be too soon for Tim Howard (calf) to make his comeback, and Leon Osman (foot), Steven Pienaar (knee) and Tony Hibbert (unspecified) remain sidelined. Rodgers has to decide whether Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is ready to play from the start. The England international has made just two 20-minute substitute appearances since his comeback from a five-month lay-off but is approaching full fitness. There are slight injury doubts over midfielders Lucas Leiva (thigh), Lazar Markovic (back) and Adam Lallana (groin). Opta stats Everton have won just three of their last 12 Premier League games at Goodison Park (W3 D5 L4). The Reds have won four of their last five Premier League away matches. Steven Gerrard has five goals and two assists in his last six Premier League appearances against the Toffees. Merson’s prediction I'm sitting on the fence here, but I don't think any team can afford to lose. Everton had a good result last week and if they had lost at Palace, I'd have gone Liverpool. Liverpool are strange recently. I went to the Chelsea game and they were unlucky, then a few days later they play Bolton at home and nearly go out the cup. There's not a lot between these two when their best teams are out. I don't see what difference Daniel Sturridge will make at the moment, you want to play Adam Lallana, Coutinho and Sterling so I don't know how he's going to get involved at the moment. If he brings Sturridge in, someone misses out. I think at the moment they'll keep the starting XI the same as they have done. PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1 The Merseyside ..... http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/313619/preview |
