Dear fellow Nairalanders,
My stay in the US, so far, has been splendid...
I understand that coming to America is almost the biggest dream for many Nigerians...

F-1 students have much benefits in the U.S., but food wey sweet, Na $$$ kill am... Which is why I'd like to talk about financial aspect of schooling here.

First thing you should know is that; there's no MAGIC in the U.S that will provide money... America is a country that you only earn what you worked for-- this is why most Americans are not religious.

The thing is try to payoff your tuition and other expenses throughout your first Academic year, and other things will flow easily. This way you'd enjoy your stay in America.
However, people are discouraging those that don't have enough funds...if you don't have money for your tuition and you really wanna come to America, COME!!!
You'll surely find your way legally...just that your first year would be tough and frustrating... There's always a way in America!!! If this is your case, please try to live with relatives or Nigerians that's been here for a while so that they can explain how to keep your F-1 status.

My point is: If you don't have enough fund for your first year, don't come to America... But if you really want to come or if you HAVE TO come, COME! and you'll still find your way legally...

Don't let $$$ kill your dreams and ambition...
I wish everyone success!!!

P.S: Opinions are welcome, but be sure to understand my post before contrasting, else I won't respond.

All the best

Ms Nas is right. You need to contact the schools graduate coordinators ASAP. You chose top geology schools that accept hundreds of applications a year. Priority would be given to applicants who have their first or graduate degree in the geological, physical, and natural sciences. Applicants who have taken (and passed) at least two years of Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and/or some geology classes would be given preference. Applicants with research experience and/or one or two publications would be considered first.

However, if you have taken all or most of the classes listed above; then you are good to go. If not, you may be required to take those classes first including some undergraduate (Introduction to geology, Mineralogy, Sedimentary petrology, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Hydrogeology, Paleontology, Petroleum geology, and Structural Geology) and/or graduate geology classes, including the summer field class before advancing. This conditional admission of course can only be justified "only if" you have a good CGPA, bad a*s GRE scores, strong LORs, and a very strong statement of purpose among others. Please be informed that it may take you between 2-3 years (depending on how fast you are) to take these pre-requisites, and another 4-5 years to complete the PhD program. I will advise you to apply to as many schools as you can. Choose up to 3-5 safety schools just in case. With your record, funding is not guaranteed but its a possibility.

How is A.C.E today? I used to be a regular at the gym, Oduduwa hall, Fine-Arts studio, and the market. Many of my friends finished from your school.

P.S - When writing potential supervisors or graduate coordinators, do not say you have a degree in Physics Education. Please say that you have a dual degree in Physics and Education or a degree in Physics with a minor in Education. Let your transcript do the rest of the talking.

Thanks very much for your response sir. considering everything that I've read prior to my undergraduate discipline, from you and Msnas,
I'm thinking abt changing my course to medical physics, Pls am I good to go with that ? and pls can GA /funding for Msc/PhD be 100% guaranteed for that course?...Thank you.
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 6 by STENON(f): 6:42pm On Feb 09, 2015
MsNas:

Please do contact Professors or program directors to know how they go about their application. This is an excerpt I got from the UND Geology program's webpage.
1. For admission to the geology Ph.D. program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in geology from an
accredited college or university or otherwise demonstrate sufficient coursework, training, or experience in
geoscience.
2. For “approved” status, students must have completed a 5-6 credit hour geology field course, along with
satisfactory achievement in supporting science and mathematics, as determined by the department graduate
admissions committee
.

The other schools you posted were not really clear on their specifications. Also, I think what they offer is PhD Geology and not PhD Geophyics. Those are two different courses.
okay, Thank you , Pls can I apply for Medical Physics considering my undergraduate discipline? Although, I'm yet to search for Grad schools for that course, Pls is there any school that you can recommend for me and with good source of funding for international students. thank you

All the best indeed. I like your words. Unfortunately, the US is not for everybody. It depends on what God wants for you. There's also Canada, Australia, Finland, New Zealand, the UK and Sweden. These countries are superior as well, in terms of passports.

Amefrica is doing pretty well in Canada I guess. Everyone's destiny can never be the same. God made it that way.

Do you know why "In God We Trust" is written on the US Currency? cheesy

It's basically a way to establish the US, yet some Americans are against it. This is really crazy. Even my girlfriend does not like it too. She always laugh at every word i utter. I doubt if she believes in God.
