My job involves some travel out of town to rural places
Takes me away from home which is the downside but it is an opportunity to do something different
The reward and job satisfaction are phenomenal
There are some real poor people in this country and they are so appreciative of the little or much we do when we come
I do enjoy the small extra pay too

the north and midwest are no different. I like to do road trips in the summer and fall - wine tours, trips around lake michigan, criss-crossing NY, DC, Delaware, Maryland, VA, MA, CT, NY, NJ... Rhode island, Maine and NH to come in the next few months... maybe i will resurrect my camera and do something like this. would be fun.

Whenever i tell people here in NY that I cone from Ohio they look at me like i'm a village farmer

It's so amazing, how little New Yorkers know about the midwest. To them, anything west of the appalatian mountains is farm and guns and church and republicans (ohio voted obama twice o ) until and except california.

And for some, anything south of the Potomac river is madness, jim crow, civil war relics, bible belt, military, confederate territory, hot weather and boring except miami and Atlanta.

Meanwhile in Ohio they see Ny/NJ as proud cowardly elites.

Small towns look very quiet and peaceful ....nice to live ..but like someone said..hmmm.....home of the racists!

You are right. A friend and I once took road trip to a very small town called Eastern Shore in VA, oh my God! It was like the world left them behind. Old 17/18 century homes, few stores around and a really sleepy small town. The food was good you know those mom and pop restaurant by the sea.
It was creepy and was told to not allow your car to break down here .

My scariest experience years ago in another state was a woman in another rural town that insisted I give her narcotic pain medicines and refused to leave the premises
We eventually called the Sheriff to get her out and on searching her,she had a loaded gun without a permit in her car and was a wanted person and she was handcuffed and taken away.

Restaurants in rural or small towns are the best.i made this thread to show the little talked about side of America without the bright lights and tall buildings .where people are just managing life.i have patients that didn't show up because they couldn't buy gasoline for the car or can't find anybody to drive them but they are so appreciative of what you do.
America is not all glamor

The heater doesn't seem to be working optimally and I am very cold but my heart is warm
We are working off a mobile unit


I have a shawl to keep me warm in between

Thank God I now have an additional space heater to warm my legs

Yes it can be scary especially in the middle of the night.
Few years ago, I did a road trip with my uncle from houston texas to naples in florida.
Along the way we did a detour into a very small town restaurant not far from Mobile, Alabama, guys I haven't been so scared in my life, as we are the only two colored guys among the local population.
We immediately order our food as takeaway instead of sitting down to eat - by the way the 'southern chicken wings' were the best i ever had.

Also rural America are full of big insects - crickets.
