Yes.
Money or government property "stolen" by government official is called corruption.
Money "stolen" by a politician is called graft
Money "stolen" by bank official is called fraud.
The car "stolen" from your garage is called stealing.

I hope you know that stolen is the past perfect tense of steal. Graft, fraud are all what? Stealing aka corruption.

We will be going round and round if you continue like this.

Money is not property. Property has a value in money so money can not have a value other that what it is. Every other thing you own has a value in money thats why its called property but the money you have is its own value so not a property. This is plain economics not English.

Corruption is dishonest actions that destroys people's trust in the person or group

http://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/corruption

My question to you. Is stealing of public money by a corrupt official not a dishonest action that destroys the people's trust?

Note Virtual currency is treated as property by the American IRS.

If you have money in your PayPal account, it is treated as property.

Defining corruption with one word is fraudulent or dishonest.

If the scenario is fraud, it is corrupt.

Considering that fraud and corruption are synonymous, you can use corruption to describe the scenario and wont be totally wrong. However, the precise term as per grammar and law, its called fraud.

If you commit fraud either in public or private domain, you are corrupt. So following prof's definition, he is wrong. It is not only people in power that you can address their acts as corrupt. Private firms participants can be addressed as corrupt if they commit fraud, thievery or manipulation

Stealing and corruption may have a common synonym but may not be synonyms themselves.

The terms money and currency are not synonymous and cannot be used interchangeably. Currency cannot even be a property in the first place. Who's property is the Nigerian Naira or the American Dollar? I am not an economist but in my knowledge, virtual money and virtual currency are one and the same thing. A search on Google gave me a Wikipedia definition of virtual currency as digital money. This brings us back to the same thing , Money. In this case digital money may have a value different from that of liquid money and may not be used to settle liabilities. So technical by my understanding of that economics, digital money or virtual currency as you may call it can be said to be a property.

In summary, virtual currency is a property and therfore not money.

Hope you got my point.

Thats why fraud and corruption are synonymous while both are not synonymous with stealing. I also initially thought the way you were thinking until i checked the definition of corruption in the dictionary myself. Check the definition yourself and save yourself from GEJ.

If Prof's definition is wrong, Google is wrong because he got his definition exactly from Google without changing a word. This is where you, GEJ and others shoot yourselves on the foot.

I agree because oxford dictionary has 9 other definitions of corruption as regards difference context. A mind can be corrupt in that context. A computer system can be corrupt in that context and so on and so forth. In the government context, stealing and corruption are quite different.

I now see how the prof will rule a country of over 160 millions through goggle. I am not a partisan politician, but I strongly believe more in practical things than theoretical phenomenon. If a whole prof is consulting Google to tweet, I doubt his capabilities of handling practical issues in Nigeria. We Nigerians should cultivate the habit of critical analysis than following Google like zombie because it was originated from the whites. What gives you that assurance that the person that describes corruption there know it all? If a professor in Nigeria cannot discern a wrong definition from the net and comes out publicly to criticise a simple logic, then we have a great problem in our educational sector.

The Prof. Is an intelligent man. He does not need Google to make a point. He used it because it is an easier source for the masses and it is readily available.

You should advice GEJ to start using google so that he would stop flopping on live TV.

What about Buhari;
* I have never seen any school built in his name. *
I have never seen any borehole constructed by him.
* There is no record of any scholarship awarded by
him or for him nor through him. * I have never
seen him use his popularity to canvass for any
charitable work nor any humanitarian effort, not
even at the height of the polio scourge where other
purposeful and prominent leaders lead the
campaign for immunization. * No single text book
has been donated to any school either by him, for
him or through him. * Asides from doing nothing,
he has not improved himself since his exit from
office. * No book written, no memoirs, no lectures,
nothing. * The only thing of note he can point to
are his numerous interviews on the BBC Hausa
station. * He never champion for a university in his
state nor has he ever been involved in any kind of
programme to better the lives of the Almajiris in
Daura. * His entire existence has not lead to any
meaningful development in Daura, yet they say he
can change Nigeria. Doesn't charity begin at home
again? * No wonder he was referred to as being
''perpetually unelectable''. * He is not a patron to
any organization, group or association. * No
professional body in Nigeria has ever invited him
for their lecture, convention or gala night. * The
only time any known form, body or human
assemblage ever chose him to do anything for
them was when the Boko Haram terrorist sect
nominated him as their spoke person in the
proposed talks with the Fed. Govt. He recently
joined twitter because of elections. At 72 what does
he have to offer? I need change we all need
change but Gen Buhari isn't the answer!

There is nothing wrong with what you have said. However, stealing is a corrupt act but the context in which the corrupt is mention refers to the state of the stealers mind. Like i said before corruption has 9 other context.

Corruption can be something that has gone off the the right way of doing things. That means corruption is a broader description of an anomaly.

Cheating, stealing, bribery and even waywardness can be described as being corrupt.

The president was only trying to let us understand that the way we pronounce corruption belittles the attribute of crime to the individual without specifying exactly what the person did.

The confusion in Nigeria is that once you say someone is corrupt 90% of the time it means stealing, so the president is simply saying let's call it exactly what it is stealing.

If I say you have a corrupt mind, does that mean you have stolen something even if you used sexual inuendos to describe something that had no connection with sex.
But if I say you are a thief, it is very explicit and everyone would understand you have taken something that does not belong to you without the owner/s permission.
