tonididdy:True, I agree, it's a great movie but sometimes critics don't see things the way we see them. Here are some of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Read them and see for yourself. Meanwhile, I'll post some here... Toothless, poorly scripted and drowning in an overload of pointless CGI, Dracula Untold just plain sucks, both as a medieval epic and as the supposed launching pad for a new generation of movie monsters. Dracula Untold is agreeably silly at points, but that hardly covers for the fact that much of the film's action is visually incomprehensible. ...another misguided contemporary update of a classic character. Vlad's a super-monster. The plot gets jittery. Vlad's relationship with his sweet, fair, lovely wife remains sweetly, fairly, lovingly vapid. And into the 15th-century setting is tossed the modern trope of the father who'll do anything for his family. Why this critics are harsh, based on what I've read is that the story of Lord Implaler (which in itself is a true life story of Vlad the Impaler, of the house of Drak/Dragon) who had issues with the Turks... Hope you read the reviews though. |

My My looks like I hit a raw nerve, you dey vex? I thought since you were so good at dishing criticisms at other people, that perhaps you would be matured enough to appreciate some criticisms about you. LWKMD well I can see I was wrong VillageBoi: incase it wasn't clear in my previous post I am aware of nollywood's errors and disorganization and every other fault you can mention, so keep your asss kisser excuse inside your pocket my friend VillageBoi: Smh why are you being so shallow? "We all know nollywood movies are bad" means that whatever fault you lifted in your "review" was already common knowledge, that doesn't mean I expect every nollywood movie to come out bad ,besides a line ago I thought I was an asss kisser? na wao you don vex so te you don dey contradict yourself Lol! VillageBoi: I'm sorry but I thot the topic title was A Nairalander's "Review" Of The Benin Kingdom Historical Movie "Invasion 1897" Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks your write up is a review so please do enlighten us on what your tasteless write up is and Speaking of enlightenment, movie reviewing isn't a career? So what do roger ebert or kim newman do for a living? here have a link: [http://education-portal.com/articles/Become_a_Film_Critic_Education_and_Career_Roadmap.html], educate yourself movie reviewing is actually a career, I just hope you don't take corrections personal too And who says you can't talk about movies after you watch them? I only said your review sucked and you have no future in the movie reviewing business Why are you so pained? Maybe I should save that rope for you VillageBoi: lol of course you can't respond to that (and I respect you for that) because its the truth, which is bitter but has to be said anyway cool your temper 15 Likes 6 Shares |

mrmagoo:No idea where you got that from. I clearly wrote the thread heading as "Invasion 1897 - British Film Institute - Q&A Session - 7th Feb, 2015"... exactly as it has been since the thread was posted. Direct link as posted in the TV/Movies section - https://www.nairaland.com/2138196/invasion-1897-british-film-institue Oh and I do appreciate criticisms... but then again you'd have to actually pop into certain film threads to find that out. 1 Like |

mrmagoo:You'll have to try much harder at sarcasm mate. What it really is is the plain, simple daftness that has been prevalent in all your posts in this thread. Did you really drop a line "educate yourself movie reviewing is actually a career"? Oh my... Discovery 2015! We get you love the sound of your own voice but come on take your own so-called 'advice' and make it interesting. Actually don't bother. I didn't like the film... so get over it! 1 Like |

VillageBoi:Or perhaps you should try harder at reading and understanding, for the love of God why will a human being refer to a write up as a question and answer session? Not even a two year old can make such a mistake(metaphor by the way just incase you want to take the two year old thing literally) you know what? I shall do you a favour and pretend like I didn't see this, I want to believe you reason like a human being VillageBoi:Well you did say insinuate that there was no job like reviewing movies and I simply enlightened you Who knew you would take offence? well at least now you know VillageBoi:Well this part is kind of meaningless, don't tell me you are running out of things to say come on you can do better than this, its embarrassing VillageBoi:Oh running with your tail between your legs, good idea at least you know when to accept defeat By the way here is a real kicker I haven't even seen the movie so once again shove your "asss kisser" card back in the deck 10 Likes 3 Shares |

I have been fighting the urge to comment on this thread but I cannot withstand it anymore. I am on a resolution to never reply "people who don't know better" but I'm seeing incredibly shitty posts by mrmagoo, lechiffre and co. Please guys if na play... stop am. First this is not the main critic thread for invasion 1897...this is a Q&A session...for rubbinMinds. I'm pretty sure a pure criticism of this movie will be even less merciful. Second, a review is only a person's personal opinion. It is not worth arguing over. If you don't like it then write your own. Then we should know that the importance of criticisms in any profession cannot be overemphasized. In Arts, in Literature... the poets... Even a PhD thesis has to be defended before a panel of jurors. As a moviemaker your first critic is your audience. (just like in the beverage industry where your last and ultimate critic for your product is the final consumer.... no matter how many ISO/NIS certs. you've got.) The AUDIENCE has the right to criticize a movie and NO they are not obliged to make their own movies due to that. Atleast you see Audience ratings on international movie sites. In hollywood, indie filmmakers are usually on their toes knowing that various critics (professional, arm.chair, audience, etc) are at their backs... watching. That is how they encourage professionalism and creativity. shout out to Lanre Tyson.! www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5D58LfKpwI&sns=tow Peace! 1 Like |

prof800:Okay prof here's the deal I'm not against criticism or reviews or whatever and also this isn't about the invasion movie it was bad and I accept, so now prof answer these question -do you want nollywood to develop? -how much has changed since we have been criticizing nigerian movies? -isn't it hard time we tried other options than criticisms to develop our movie industry? I want change I want nollywood to succeed I want it to go as far as our music industry has gone But for this to happen it takes more than just pointing fingers and ranting all the time we need a game plan we need action, fine the outsourcing I said is just an idea it might work it might not work there may be better ideas but my point is if we want nollywood to grow ideally criticism should accelerate development but practically......... no one is listening 3 Likes |

mrmagoo: No I did not insinuate anything. This is the EXACT post (read the bold part) - VillageBoi:You note the word 'my' in there? That's very, very different from "Where did you read that movie reviewing is a career?" For all the noise you have made in this thread you completely lack the basic understanding & reading skills to figure out what is written... and the above is not the only instance from you in this thread. Here's another one - mrmagoo:Where in the world did I refer to what you are calling my write-up as a Q&A session? The video posted is the Q&A session you twit. You very clearly can't understand anything you read... pls keep quiet about; no be by force nah. For the sake of "Yay I managed to yab VillageBoi" the drivel you are writing is extremely embarrassing to read. I'm not running, I just can't be bothered to type anymore to a point-blank idi.ot. 1 Like |

VillageBoi: haha is this how you get when someone corrects you? Okay what did you now mean by the question "where did you read that movie reviewing is my career"? That's such a dumb question and you're so confident to mention it smh Which one be "my" and "a" wey you dey put I only implied that its not a career/field/job you will succeed in why? Because your write up was terrible,(just like when you say comedy is not the thing for you when you make a bad joke get it?) so why are you confusing yourself? VillageBoi: Ok now I'm getting scared how do you reason? Did I ever mention anything about your video? I was only targeting your write up that's why I even stated "since you've called your really long post a Q&A session" long post having to do with a write up Get it? even on nairaland home page they called it a review because of your write up so I guess they can't read and comprehend too bah? Smh, okay let's so take it one at a time your opening post consists of a Q&A session(video),a movie trailer(video) and a write up(the whole "I saw this movie at BFI blah blah" you typed) , so just to clarify our"confusion" why don't you tell me what that is if you claim its not a review is it an essay? is it an article? is it a sermon? VillageBoi: oh I see what this is, I hurt your pride lol now it all makes sense, for a moment I thought you were crazy or playing dumb but I see you are just angry. Pele o lol! I never knew you were some kind of local champion on nairaland, perhaps I wouldn't have been so disrespectful and insensitive from now on, I shall address you as igwe I hope that appeases your ego smh Fact still remains: -Your write up was terrible and unhelpful -Find more creative ways to gain attention other than criticizing "bad" nollywood films to earn cheap points -Stop deceiving yourself with the "a Q&A session", "my write up" routine because I know you clearly understood what I meant so stop embarrassing yourself If e pain you too much you are free to run unto a knife. 5 Likes 1 Share |

prof800:Hmmm! So out of nowhere a random bros jumps out and starts selflessly defending villageboi's thread,Did villageboi put you up to this or are you village boi's alter ego? You know what scratch that I want to believe villageboi is a lot more matured than that and your surfacing few seconds after his disappearance is just a mere coincidence prof800:But lemme guess you are going to violate your principles because I said something horrifyingly horrible right? my my you are so dramatic prof800:Including the write up? Because that is what everyone on the thread is concerned with prof800:Didn't argue man I just told him his review was not constructive and the guy has been tripping balls ever since prof800:If you think that our criticisms are keeping/ or will keep nigerian movie producers on their toes then my friend you are a dreamer with a capital D have you seen the nollywood bashing threads on nairaland? I swear they can create a library with it I won't be surprised if there are actually in thousands and what sickens me is that they all do the same thing, criticize, clean mouth and waka commot without proferring any solutions who will take those kind of critics seriously? Though it maybe unconventional, my own na if you claim to know so much about quality production and creativity then why do you limit your self to generic nollywood is not good criticisms? why don't you do your own movie and set an example? Abeg just look up wikkipedia's article on the movie figurine and the legacy it left in the industry, the movie wasn't just ignored, it became case of study in many universities, other producers started working on production quality to compete, nollywood's international attention began to increase all for just one movie something that years of constant criticisms could not achieve. prof800:Oya where is your retract for me? Make it snappy I have a reputation to protect on nairaland just kidding! 9 Likes 1 Share |

paranorman: Lool..you can say that again. If u were to go by d comments on NL, you would feel Nigerians are dull, dimwitted fellows who are usually quick to insult to cover up their ignorance. @o.p.. you're right about one aspect in particular... Invasion1897 is an Epic story that should have been done right because it tells the story of one of the last great African empires and exemplifies the problems with colonial relations then (and even now) His failure to do just that made a mockery of the whole thing. The movie was Painfully Disappointing. That Lancelot needs to be tarred and feathered. 1 Like |

dBard: You totally bnailed it nigerians are funny people let me tell you a funny story See how everyone is shining teeth with villageboi because he is criticizing a local mOvie There was a thread where the same villageboi criticized a hollywood movie I think it was godzilla or pacific rim If you see what nairalanders told him? I even felt upset despite the fact that I wasn't the one being insulted There was this particular comment someone made"hardwork goes into all these movies and some amateur who has never seen a camera will show up and condemn it" I was like My God so hard work doesn't go into nollywood films? Even if its the crappiest movie in the world, shooting a movie is never an easy task it almost looks like nigerians are programmed to be bias if you criticize a bad hollyweood film tthey call you a hater but if you condemn any nollywood movie at all then its constructive and anybody who does not join them in their condemnation is automatically a supporter of mediocrity and a slowpokre Nigerians indeed are funny people maybe I'll make that my new signature Interesting thread 2 Likes |

brothers:I wouldn't buy any of those books; not one of them would do anything to help you become a better 'DOP', however, if you are on a course and 'have to' pick one of them then go for Ken Dancyger's book... it's actually 'Technique of film & video editing'. Knowing about editing 'could' make you a better 'shooter' but I personally prefer 'In the Blink Of An Eye' by Walter Murch (he's considered one of the best editors of our times). There are a ton of good ones out there like 'Directing: Film Techniques & Aesthetics' by Michael Rabiger' All of the books mentioned by you and I so far probably have a bit too much chaff for you wanting to be a DOP - 'Cinematography: Theory and Practice' by Blain Brown is pretty much more in tune with exactly what you want and would definitely be the most useful of the bunch. If you can't get certain books then Google cinematographers that you like and you'll find talks, lectures and other interesting/helpful things on Youtube. In this day you no longer 'have to' go into an actual film school or take a degree in film to learn this stuff You'll hopefully be able to watch the film when it comes to a cinema near you. |

Quite a while ago, I can't remember which thread I said the exact same thing "Filmmaking is very hard work" of course various people said I must be crazy and how can it ever be hard work. If only any one of them went out to make even a short film they would realise how difficult it is. |
