Nigeria's Standard Gauge Railway Modernisation Projects

The railway modernisation initiative in Nigeria aims at replacing the existing narrow gauge system with the wider standard gauge system, while allowing high-speed train operations on the railway network.

The $8.3bn contract for the Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernisation project awarded to CCECC in 2006 marked the beginning of the initiative.

The project, however, couldn't be implemented due to funding problems. It was later re-scoped into different stand-alone segments and the existing 1,124km narrow gauge Lagos-Kano line was rehabilitated.

Abuja-Kaduna is the first segment to be implemented as part of Lagos-Kano standard gauge project.

My friend, it's not new. They are modernizing and expanding. The land Abuja occupies today didn't drop from the sky yesterday. The rail tracks had already passed through the jungle where abuja is located today. It's those same rail lines that are being modernized. Granted they'll change a lot of things, but it'll be DECEITFUL to claim it is a NEW project

See the lagos pix, It's an entirely new project
How can you you say it is not new when the old narrow gauge has passed away. The fact that you have to remove the narrow guage is extra expenditure. It is new jare!!!

I saw the thread and decided to check the background story, and do a quick research on the Ethiopian one (I got love to Ethiopia, man). Only to discover the fraud. Apparently, the rail was already there...and all they needed to do is track laying for standard modern gauge line. And these folks built that with billions. Then you've got Port Harcourt with 4km monorail gulping over 100 billion - ditto Lagos.

These folks are rogues!

Don't blame the politicians. You will be surprised to see the level of approval they get from their supporters even those who are not benefiting from the loot at all.

Leme ask you a simple questions if the tables were turned would you start ... speaking all this turenchi you are spewing about Cost per kilometer etc.

Is it not those same "old, end-of-life", abandoned locomotives" that were re-painted by GEJ?

Maybe he should tell us why Nigeria should launch a NEW TRAIN that takes 33-Hours to travel from Lagos to Kano, a distance of just 1,200Km?

Praising mediocrity is the bane of saTANOIDS joor.

Lol. I hear that.

From the outside looking in, you can't help but get mad at the arrogance and how brazen the elites are in enriching themselves, at the expensive of the poor folks...who look half-dead. That's the humanity in you, and being averse to seeing disadvantaged folks being cheated out of their just due.

However, once you analyse the stupidity of these sycophantic pseuds...you'll understand why those folks don't care. And can you really blame them since life is about the survival of the fittest, and maximising every opportunity? - classic capitalism.

Then, when you realise that poorest don't have access to the internet; their voices can't be heard; most of them don't understand what's going on; and they want the best out of life but just don't have what it takes to demand it. Humanity will kick in again.

The funniest thing is that: it's not like these folks are indoctrinated with anything, like other countries where everything is controlled. These folks are just used to poverty, underdevelopment, mediocrity, and lacking the best in life - and it's more or less a norm now. Hence they'd rather play the deceitful tripe, to maintain loyalty to what they aren't benefiting zilch from, rather than ask questions and demand their just due.

I'm out, man. grin

The rails may be of different technology, using different types of rolling stock/carriage and passing through varying terrain and different right of way, different LOS (Level of Service), cost of compensation, built by different pedigree of contractors and so on and so on and so on. Hence, the huge variance in estimated contract sum. But what do I know. I'm just an ordinary civil engineer.

@ Matthewbriggs played a fast one on all of you. He compared the costs of STANDARD GAUGE rail from Abuja -Kaduna and LIGHT RAIL in APC controlled states that are INTRA CITY.
The proper thing to do would have been to compare the costs of LIGHT RAIL PROJECTS in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja . The Abuja Light Rail costs FAR exceed the amount for the the other two. For instance, the Lot1B of the Abuja Light Rail ,covering a distance of 31 kms will cost the federal government $750 million.

The OP is a classic example of a deceitful illiterate sycophantic pseud. Rather than pose an honest question about why all the rail projects in Nigeria are over-inflated - and call out everyone for corruption. He decided to use a deceitful premise to chastise the others, all in trying to sound vacuously "intelligent". Thus looking like a m0ron in the process.

I just checked the background of the Abuja-Kaduna rail project - and it's basically a modernisation of existing rail, by replacing the gauge system.

Reference:

The railway modernisation initiative in Nigeria aims at replacing the existing narrow gauge system with the wider standard gauge system, while allowing high-speed train operations on the railway network.

The $8.3bn contract for the Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernisation project awarded to CCECC in 2006 marked the beginning of the initiative.

http://www.railway-technology.com/projects/abuja-kaduna-rail-line/

So, the question is: why should the mere replacement of gauge system be that expensive? At least, both Lagos and Rivers are building new rail tracks in cosmopolitan cities, where loads of compensations would have to be paid - with very difficult logistics. Compared to something that's already there, in need of modernisation. And that's your premise for comparative analysis? - laughable. Where are the real Nigerian youths, not these illiterate crumb-munching sycophants? They're all rogues!

Do you know what is called right-of-way? Building a new railway track on an existing right-of-way is technically supposed to significantly reduce the overall project costs. This is a superior advantage the Abuja-Kaduna railway project has over Lagos light rail project.

For those who don't know, the Lagos light rail project is a dual project that also involves the reconstruction and upgrading of Federal highway from 6-lanes to 10 lanes. A BRT lane is also incorporated into this design. This is in addition to the light rail track been fitted alongside the road constructions. This project is the biggest infrastructural construction in West Africa. Right-of-way is being expanded to cater for the ambitious project hence leading to several demolition of structures and consequent compensations. The OP needs to study more on project management and cost analysis!
