Former President Obasanjo Has Done More For Igbos Than President Jonathan by IbileIfe: 1:28pm On Feb 17, 2015
Ironically it was the much maligned President Olusegun Obasanjo that did most to reintegrate Igbos. He appointed Igbos to head the ministry of finance, Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Director-General of the Nigerian StockExchange was also Igbo (Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Ndidi Okereke-Onyuike). Heading these three portfolios virtually left Igbos in control of Nigeria’s economy and monetary policy. That economic dominance remains as today Okonjo-Iweala has returned as Finance Minister, and Bright Okogu is the Director-General of the Budget Office.

In addition, Obasanjo appointed Fabian Osuji, Chinwe Obaji and Obiageli Ezekwesili (all Igbos) in succession as the Minister of Education, and Dora Akunyili as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

Later, Obasanjo broke a taboo by appointing an Igbo: Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi (the son of Nigeria’s first military head of state, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi) as the Defence Minister. After Obasanjo left office his successor President Yar’Adua appointed Mike Okiro to become the first Igbo Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria’s history. When Okiro retired, he was succeeded by another Igbo – Ogbonnaya Onovo. Yar’Adua also appointed Ojo Maduekwe as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Obj has no power to Stop igbos from appointment, as each state must present a ministerial person. U should rather say igbos have done obj great good by excelling in their respective ministries. That's Why even in GEJ tenure they are d bedrock of his success story.

Fool u don't do igbos good by appointment bit rather the federal presence u sighted in their land. compare obj and GEJ in terms of development in east

chai,

you see how the average youth is easily cowed into foolishness.

that a politician appointed his cronies or their loyalists now translates to developing a region, shame. all the names you mentioned put together can not equal the benefit of the 2nd onitsha bridge or the numerous federal roads in the south east.

does those appointment translate to pipe born water or standard rail or good health facilities or standard schools or an international air port. or it equals good housing or stable economy.

How does mere political appointments affect the entire igbos in the SE? Where was your brain manufactured? I would rather the federal government develope the east infrastructurally with good roads, international seaport and trade zones than have tens of political appointments awarded to Igbos who would be serving Nigerians with her portfolio and not necessarily developing the east infrastructurally and otherwise.

It was even Obasanjo that conceptualised the 2nd Niger bridge.

Your GEJ who sacked Dike, Ihejirika and Adaeze and has been insulting Soludo?
So who are the Igbos left to become bedrock of his success?
The finance minister that colluded with him in the misappropriation of revenues? grin
What is your definition of success?
When GEJ and his family fly overseas for medical treatment, because they are afraid of using the hospitals in Nigeria?
Nigeria spends over N80 billion on trips abroad, by her citizens, for medical treatment, the Senate Committee on Health has said.

The leader of the committee, Ifeanyi Okowa, said this as he exchanged views with the Minister of State for Health, Mohammed Pate, and stakeholders in the sector at the budget defense session.

Mr. Okowa said close to N80 billion is spent yearly on medical tourism in the country.

“We know that several Nigerians travel outside the shores of this country to the United Kingdom and India for medical treatment.

“You and I will agree that this is not the direction we need to go,” he said.

Senior government officials, and their families, in Nigeria often travel for medical trips abroad. Some of the recent travellers include the Senate President, David Mark, and the first lady, Patience Jonathan.

When their best houses are overseas and not in Yenagoa and Okrika?

You want to mention road construction or repairs and renovation of airports?
Another conduit for corruption with over invoicing and inflated contracts that made the ministers overnight billionaires?
It is only in Nigeria that poor civil servants become billionaires within four years of their appointments.

If the Igbos supporting GEJ are not fools, they would have been supporting their fellow Igbo presidential candidates.

"As Igbo political leaders fall over themselves in the pro-Jonathan re-election campaign, we may want to speculate whether the Ijaw will go out of their way to support an Igbo presidential candidate with hysteria as our people are currently doing. I am afraid the Igbo political leaders just don’t get it." -Igwebuike

My brother, Igwebuike,

You can say that again, drum it, scream it. Lay the Igbo in a grave, assign ISIS and BH to hold the Igbo to task, and nothing will happen. Make them, the Igbos , become smart for once and know that the only Ijaw man that will support an Igbo presidential aspirant is a dead one .

I tell Igbos that castigate me that my support for Buhari is in part, rooted in my love for the political future of the Igbos, in the area of one day, producing the president of Nigeria.

I believe Igbos have a lot more to reap politically with our support of Hausa candidate than with an Ijaw man. Hausa and Yoruba out number Ijaw and all other ethnic minorities of the SS, as such, a lost political love of Hausa, by Igbo, would translate to a dead presidential slot for an Igbo. Ijaw votes alone cannot make an Igbo president of Nigeria.

No Ijaw, even en mass, in this world, would support an Igbo presidency. Check what some did to the Igbos during Biafra.

President Jonathan won't ever do it, in his life time!

Igbos should get this simple math rule, or political reality of number games right this time, or forget it for life. We should support a candidate whose people's support by numbers, whenever, can make an Igbo man president.

An entire Ijaw or Urhobo vote can never in Nigeria make any human president. On the other hand, a great number of Northern votes, with some from Yoruba can make an Igbo a president.

Numbers is what wins votes in politics. Smart politicians know this and lean often, in the directions of where the greater numbers are. They do this by policies that favor the voting block that has most numbers. Democrats in USA politics, Obama in particular, knows this well, hence, his executive orders on immigration, that is most likely going to favor the Latina population greatly, favors immigrant communities too. Latina and other minority immigrant population is on the rise in USA.

Obama has, by this alone, paved a greater future for the Democratic Party in presidential elections.

How does this translate to Igbo political future in Nigerian presidential elections?

The answer is just simple: Igbos’ aspiration for the presidency can be more feasibly achieved with our support of an Hausa/Fulani and Yoruba candidates in national elections than with support of a minority ethnic candidate, or a tribal candidate, from an ethnic group whose 100 % support, if ever, cannot constitute up to 5% of entire votes needed to be president of Nigeria.

Igbo political stake holders leading us once more to support Jonathan want to destroy our future presidential slot.

I believe our Igbo political leaders know this well , and since a lot of them, Iwuanyanwu, Arthur Nzeribe, Achike Udenwa, all of them, are 65 and above, and phasing out , and not likely to hang on for another 30 years, they have resorted to self-care than in the care of the political future of Igbo land. They want to take Igbo future political gains with them to their graves.

These elders cite that Jonah, an Ijaw man is our man. That excuse is dumb. Does an Ijaw feel that an Igbo is his man?

Some say we have to support Jonah because he made our daughters ministers. Making an Igbo a minister is not what I call political favor. Those ministerial positions have not really translated to better federal roads in Igbo land.

Igbos are being cowards , blind and idiotic , with their blind support of Jonah, who I believe , will never , in his life time , as an Ijaw man , support any Igbo presidential aspirant.

We seem not to be getting it!
