The United Nations has urged the Nigerian government to ensure the sanctity of new dates for its general elections, amid increasing concerns the government may yet again move the crucial polls from March 28 and April 11.

The general elections were shifted from February 14 and 28 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over security fears.

Many Nigerians and the international community have urged the government to ensure the polls are not shifted the second time. The main opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC, says the government instigated the first shift to avoid the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan at the polls.

In a statement Friday, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, “strongly” urged the Nigerian government and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to respect the new dates and ensure there are no further shifts.

“Following the postponement of general elections in Nigeria to 28 March and 11 April, the Secretary-General strongly urges the Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure these new dates are maintained, in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution,”
a statement by the world body said.

Mr. Ban’s statement came days after the head of INEC, Attahiru Jega, told Nigerian Senators he could not commit to the sanctity of the new dates for the elections, saying that was outside the powers of the electoral body.

Speaking Thursday, President Goodluck Jonathan said the elections will hold as scheduled by INEC.
The United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban, welcomed the president’s commitment to the new calendar.

He commended the progress made by INEC in the preparation for the elections, including the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards.

He urged all relevant national institutions to continue to work with INEC to ensure all voters can exercise their constitutional right to participate in the elections freely and without intimidation.

The Secretary-General expressed strong concern over reports of election-related violence.

He urged all political leaders to adhere to their commitments under the Abuja Accord, to refrain from inflammatory statements and to immediately condemn any statements from their supporters that amount to an incitement to violence or subversion of the electoral process.

The Secretary-General reiterated to Nigerians that the United Nations will be closely following developments and is offering its full support to Nigeria at this important moment.

I hope so too.
I see some Nigerians appealing to Obama and other western governments to apply serious sanctions on Nigeria's current leadership if election dates are tampered with.

From the home front, NLC and TUC will shut down all economic activities by downing tools ala #OccupyNigeria of January 2012.

GEJ is better advised to negotiate a soft landing from the imminent loss to GMB than to attempt hijacking the electoral process.

Who is UN to dwelve into our internal affairs, this is how they truncate democracy and rule of law in different nations. The Constitution of nigeria is clear on election ptocesses and this include why when, for what reason and on what occasion elections can be,postponed.Anything short of what d constitution says will be wrong.UN cannot dictate to us.

When a man decides to make a fool of himself, do you force yourself to unsee the amusement in his clumsiness?
The question you should ask yourself is "Why all these under GEJ?"
Than Otuke fisherman shoeless man has brought so much disgrace to Nigeria's dignity.
He is returning to the creeks come this May 29.

Don't be deceived. America who runs the UN supports our corrupt government and is covertly working to stop Buhari by any means which could include assassination.

America knows the mood of vast majority of Nigerians do not support election postponement, like all the enemies of Nigeria who are lining up to give fake support for Buhari, like America, Thief Obasanjo, IBB etc, UN is looking to be absolved of blame of disenfranchising the people of Nigeria when it eventually occurs.

Despite making noise that appears to support free and fair elections the signs are that UN, Europeans would simply turn a blind eye if elections are postponed .

If elections are rigged, expect America to either turn a blind eye or simply have observers declare it free and fair. Have notice how western news media are dishonestly reporting polls as putting GEJ and GMB level, although Nigerians know Buhari is far ahead. That's a sign that they would ultimately endorse GEJ if he rigs.

Another possibility is that Nigeria’s enemies are hoping the disenfranchisment would ignite serious sectarian violence to justify intervention to ultimate formally use UN to break up Nigeria .

Nigerian youth need to get ready to come out and ensure that the government understand that the will of the people must be obeyed.

First thing is that we must forget about waiting 6 weeks for elections that all know were postponed for no other reason other than to rig.
Rather than give the riggers 6 weeks to perfect their strategies for disenfranchising us, we should encourage APC to immediately establish a parallel govt which shall remain in place until such time that Free, fair and credible elections are held.
