dein77: It is simply practical. Turn it on for a day and the entire city is locked down. |

rodbel: I agree. Traffic lights never work with bad roads. However, there is so much impunity displayed by drivers of cabs and tricycles which even traffic lights cannot handle. Traffic lights in itself won't solve this issue. A hard stance on traffic violations should be taken. The incoming government should clearly have a plan to tackle traffic management as I believe Amaechi has failed in that regards. |

During the odili government there were traffic lights but in all honesty some If not most of them were still causing traffic jams and coupled by nigerians impatience accidents were still happening. For example d traffic light at waja. Imagine being on a red light for close to 3mins and green for only 10 seconds. Dat traffic light caused a lot of hold up before it was switched off. And lets not forget the fact that no matter wat good you do for some nigerians, they still use their hand to spoil it. Vandalism |

VIPERVENOM: Traffic lights cant work in a city where all roads are filled up with vehicles except it switches in hourly interval. ie green for an hour and red for another hour. The 3 mins interval just cant work in Port Harcourt. |
Re: There Is No Single Traffic Light In Rivers State. by chemali: 10:13am On Feb 23, 2015 |
Abagworo: You have a point here but implementing the traffic lights require a holistic approach, not just switching them on because they exist. Have traffic demands been analysed? How's indiscriminate stopping by commercial vehicles at key junctions been handled? How is the use of appropriately designed bus stops being handled? If you turn them on today, like you said, the city will be locked down. If appropriately implemented, it would go a long way in alleviating the madness in PH roads. |

chemali: Amaechi did not fail in traffic management please. Lets be honest. Today in Port Harcourt you are sure of getting to where you are going but in the past one might spend all day driving from Oil Mill to Trans Amadi. The reason for the success is TIMARIV and establishment of parking laws and enforcement by the corps. The Amaechi/Jonathan feud led to Police swooping on TIMARIV corps and banning them from federal roads thereby reducing their earlier success. Touts loyal to GDI are allowed to cause traffic dis order and backed by Police. |

chemali: Our government is serious. Traffic management is one the easiest functions of a modern government. All you need do is create a working system, coupled with attendant consequences. I work as a HSE professional, and sometimes I'm deployed to traffic to control. People will mess up a weak system. When they find a tough one, they behave themselves. The road madness here is too much. |

Abagworo: I wasn't here Pre-Amaechi though and based on what I learnt, it was worse previously. However, it could be better. Saying Amaechi failed may have been a wrong choice of words but he could do better than what we have now. |

chemali:You're right. During the Peter Odili tenure, there were traffic lights but no traffic officials to complement them. I kicked against the siting of traffic lights in Ojoto by Emenike Street, a cul-de-sac, with the New Mile 1 Hospital facing Ojojo Street. |

ikennaoma: Why won't it work here in PH? Are the humans here less human than those in other states where it has worked? All we need is a serious system. Once we get that, everyone complies. Period. |
Re: There Is No Single Traffic Light In Rivers State. by chemali: 1:54pm On Feb 23, 2015 |
ikennaoma: It didn't start to work all of a sudden in Lagos. There was enforcement. However, from what I perceive, TIMARIV/Police refrain from arresting the consistent culprits which are the commercial transport operators and focus on private individuals. Also, those who blow sirens or go around with escorts flout the rules. If there is enforcement across board, the traffic light would work. |
Re: There Is No Single Traffic Light In Rivers State. by rodbel(m): 2:39pm On Feb 23, 2015 |
chemali: TIMARIV was a good initiative but recruiting thugs into the fold was wrong. TIMARIV should make use of enlightened folks in discharging their duties. |
Re: There Is No Single Traffic Light In Rivers State. by HopeAtHand: 12:30pm On Feb 26, 2015 |
talktimi: You have repeated this point 3 times already..Its enough. The context of that statement is that Cars are more in number relative to roads in PH, so the traffic lights would therefore be more lf a nuisance than a welcome relief. The situation as it is now in PH makes traffic lights totally unnecessary..But it would change when the govt build the required flyovers and overpasses. |
