Labour Casualization cut across all industries in Nigeria, in fact we have Organizations that 65% of their employees are Contract staff. What baffles me is that there is no law protecting dis category of workers, not even a line in our weak Labour Law. Too bad.

Tell us your experience as a contract staff.

I joined a major pension firm in Nigeria as a contract staff, a company that if u mentioned its name , all ur friends will just scream ,baba o! (like too much money, u knw what i mean)

I worked my head off, did my supervisor’s(full time employees) job without stress and i never complained to them, but trust me i was complaining to God. I kept my attitude intact, never felt inferior , and never allowed no one talk to me as trash.infact if u talked me down, i would use a much more calmer tone and give u my piece of mind calmly(u sef go know say na condition make crayfish bend) .I got several promotions that would earn me like additional 5k or 8k or 10k(but really what would that amount do for a grown person in 2013)

The worst part is that as long as i was a contract staff, it was affecting my opportunities of getting employed in a good firm, maybe because they usually felt that the pay they are offering is way bigger than what i was earning. I learnt everything i could learn, enjoyed every thing i could enjoy while at it and continued to pray to God.
I was been paid 52k and fast forward, 4 yrs later, went for an interview with another firm after like 9 months i was called to resume.
I am not there yet,but am glad i dropped the red tag called outsource/contract or whatever tushness it is called. In my opinion, its a trap to any Good employees career.
If you are in this shoe right now, please pray well and look well and learn all you can so that when u have the opportunity, you can shine.

Its terrible and disheartening,my surprise is that when these big firms spung up decades back, they offerred good employment packages. How come in this generation of ours these issues are now prevalent.
NLC to be has been another helm of a directionless political class. In nigeria labour laws do not exist and there's hardly anyone to cry to if u want to challenge employers actions
I expect those fat and lazy legislators to do something about this but what do they do?, scale fences and defect from one party to another, every thing they do without purpose.

Worse still the time of deciding change has come again, what do we have?.... One man people say is clueless of which I think has too work on his hands and a former dictator who had a chance before which contributed to the problems we are having today. Is there anyway ahead?

It's not just encouraging and interesting anymore being a contract staff to any company.

I have over the years been a victim to contract staff to Multi. National and Conglomerate companies.

There is no job security getting contract jobs in Nigeria. I have had enough experience in running Million Dollars worth of goods in Warehousing and Distribution of goods most especially in the Telecom sector.

These Telecom operators give out their entire logistics services to third party service providers which are all not indigenous companies using we Nigerians as their human resources to deliver their projects. It is always bitter when you know you are only signing up for a contract job only to last for a year of two maximum.

The bitter truth is I have a registered Limited Liability company of my own now after so much wealth of experience but it's not just easy getting a single contract since August 2011 after registering the company, it's that bad. I am currently working from home as my last contract expired December2014.

Getting self employed in Nigeria is the best thing to happen to anyone who has a vision and a goal. Opportunities will definitely come someday somehow with God's favour for those who are available and prepared for it. My opinion!!!

It's not bn izi working as a contract staff. It's as if you are working for another man to eat undecided. Monkey dey work and baboon they chop tinz grin. Its even more painful when you realise that you are far better than most of the direct staff in the organisation.

The only hope that keeps me going is the fact that NO CONDITION IS PERMANENT.
Over the years, I av taken time to build myself, from SSCE to BSC and MSC (in view).

I know that one day, my story will change for good.

Hmmmmm...
Lemme jst share this Tip of the iceberg Out of a mountain of snow..
It was on a night duty at one of the most famous breweries in Nigeria.. ( Name withheld)
The operator of the pasteurizer machine was absent and I was asked to operate the machine for the night, the machine was technically not okay of which the ogas at the tops r aware of, but I was asked to manage it for the night,...The temperature was too high and this caused explosions of the beer-filled bottles, the heat oozing out of the machine to my face isn't helping issue as my eye protector always get blurred by the intensive heat And most times I will have to risk deeping my hands in d machine with a blurry vision..

At almost 12 am in d mawin, d bottles were jammed and I stretch forth to clear the jammed line... D next tin I jst hear na like bomb explosion.... The hot liquid was dripping off on my face, my clothes wet to the chest region and I was quick to notice a sharp pain on my left arm.. cry

I had sustained a deep cut on my arm, and the blood was gushing out like a stream of water, my eye googgles had been pierced and d lens got broken, thank God for d googgle, my eye would have been a history by now.. I was taken to d clinic where I was treated and I went back to work again... Chai ..
I worked for 5 years and nothing to show for it.. That was when I decide it's time I go back to skool, I quitted and resumed school and that was even another story entirely

Now I jst look back and smile... Coz everything works for My good..
Baba God I thank u

The most painful part of it
is seeing the company you are working with as a contract staff to sideline you (for not been their main staff) when giving end of the year bonus

I pray to GOD to pull me out of that modern slavery this year

currently an outsource staff with an old generation bank, its a very shameful job that at times u will be crying deep inside asking God why you are facing this humiliation.the full staff are always happy to wash you down and the company itself will keep reminding you of your position as an outsource staff by adding the acronym OS to your name so that the whole world will know your logo that you aren't a core staff(in reality,my fellow OS colleague in my branch work like mad on various platforms while some of those core staffs will find it difficult to even fill a deposit slip correctly)

like I use to tell my colleague,we are like apprentice here,we just need to learn anything learnable and leave the organization(conversion isn't in their agenda again) with our experiences which will is an asset to us.

if you are suffering with inferiority complex, dont take this type of job offer.

I believe my wife's experience counts as mine, so I'll share hers since I haven't been a contract staff grin. She was engaged by one of the most pungent outsourcing organizations ever to exist on this earth, and resident in Nigeria. SOL. First of SOL demands that you do not get pregnant within one year of employment or you will be fired. They pay shi.itty salaries like N33,000 to N40,000 flat every month angry, despite the fact they receive much from the principal companies. The worst was the 'still unbelievable' thirteenth month salary of N5,000 my wife got in December. Worse still, the paltry salaries are paid late into every month. You complain about working conditions and you get fired the next week, so what is achieved is a ready team of zombies who must work without complaining. A contract staff of three years thought he had escaped the category and spoke too eagerly, he found himself on the job market the next week. My wife worked with Sterling through SOL and used her paltry salary to take passport photographs of prospective customers, made photocopies of docx and in one instance, her HOP made her deposit one thousand naira into a prospective customer's account in order to open that account. She absolutely had no choice in the matter. Gosh! Contract staff are used to run errands in the office by bi.tchy superiors and my wife escaped that because 1. She was married 2. She stamped her feet and 3. I paid a visit to the bank one fine day in my legal attire...lol. She left both SOL and Sterling this February and if you think bankers (both permanent and contract staff) are happy, you should hear the requests that were made to her to help them in her new organization if there was any space... request like "Abeg even if its N60,000 per month, I do tire for this yeye job!" Organizations like SOL should not exist in any sane society! Really! angry

mine was horrible. i got my first job as a contract staff in an old generation bank where i had to assist in managing a top boss there. thwe job would'nt have been stressful and annoying if not for the immature boss i had. he started by asking me out.......i refused then he used so many tactics to get me to date him............ i still refused(so annoying ko). okay ooo! over to seeing that i won't date him, he talked ill of me to other bosses so i could be sacked but God was on my side and defended me.
i became frusterated at my job cos i had a masters then and all i got was a contract job in a bank sef instead of oil and gas which i specialised in. did i tell you guys that the outsourced coy did'nt help with matters cos they came up with useless reasons why the little monthly take home was debited ie housing etc (house that i never saw, stayed or knew of). pressures from my boss (he discriminated against me big time) but i kept all my worries to God and kept applying for jobs in oil and gas. God finally blessed me with a fantastic oil and gas job. youy guys need to see how i quickly resigned and blocked my boss and his cabals number in my phone (i had those numbers during my work in that bank cos i neede to inform them official stuff when they were not in the office at my cost (credit).)

Not nice at all...

And if you are still experiencing it, I would advice you look for job elsewhere and be recognized as a staff.
