A serious concern is that while government relies on external validation (opinion) as ‘proof’ of its performance, it is selective in the process—accepting the positive ones and disparaging the negative ones. Our recent exchanges illustrate the point. In my first article (26th January): “Buhari Vs Jonathan: Beyond the Elections”, I argued that “the economy seems to be on auto pilot, with confusion as to who is in charge, and government largely as a constraint. There are no big ideas, and it is difficult to see where economic policy is headed to. My thesis is that the Nigerian economy, if properly managed, should have been growing at an annual rate of about 12% given the oil boom, and poverty and unemployment should have fallen dramatically over the last five years”. No one has credibly challenged the above, except what the Financial Times of London described as a “furious response by the Minister”. But, the influential Economist Magazine of London and New York Times agreed with us. According to the Economist editorial (7th February, 2015): Source 4 Likes 1 Share |

30trillion will be missing from the national tresurey and the entire country wont stand still. If a professor can toe the line of such reasoning then we give up. And the most vile of the PDP left en mass to form APC and started chanting and shouting change. I hope soludo will soon follow his kinsman mbadinuju to APC "the congregation of falshood and fraudster" 9 Likes |

We all know that this government is a corruption itself, so there no need to cry foul. For the past 6 yrs let pdp tell us or name one person they have found guilty of being corrupt or are they saying we are all saints? If they can do, then am gonna vote GEJ hundred times. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Now i am certain soludo is an i.d.i.o.t. Nigeria might have a 100 trillion naira economy but the government does not even have access to 10% of it due to our inability to create a solid tax base. There is no way the Nigerian government can mismanage what they cant even get their hands on in the first place. 90% of the funds our government has access too comes from NNPC. It is why Nigeria is considered a mono economy and why people have been calling for government to diversify her sources of income. 7 Likes |

But neither the World Bank nor CNN conducts comprehensive independent surveys on the economy--- they comment based on the data they are given--- and their subjective “opinions” cannot substitute for hard facts. The World Bank is not a statistical agency. So if the world bank with their extensive reach and resources cannot conduct comprehensive survey I should trust that Soludo could? Na wa oo. Personally I have problem with some of these figures bandied around. How did Soludo arrive at 30 trillion estimate for the various 'leakages' he 'believes' exist. Or does he think he can just identify a leakage and promptly assign a figure to it and then run to the press with it? This kind of shooting from the hip is symptomatic of intellectual laziness. If Soludo knows for fact that N30 trillion is missing from the economy, he should show it with empirical evidence, not by his 'believe' system. Solodu's pedestrian approach is similar to Sanusi $50 billion dollar allegation which continued to shrink each time it's put to test. What is wrong with Soludo? Is this how to look for that next political appointment? 9 Likes |

I'm not an economist but I think that soludo is talking from both side of the mouth. When facts were presented that Nigeria can't simply lose what they never had, he started talking about mismanagement and theft. We can only calculate loss through income, not would be income or should have been income. someone desperately grasping at straws. 5 Likes |

davitogreat: Fellows like you make one wonder if we even live in the same country So 'oil theft, money that ought to accrue to stock of foreign reserves, unbudgeted oil subsidy payments, customs duty waivers, leakages through the self-financing government parastatals, unremitted sums by NNPC, etc ...and other black pots' are out of the control of government abi? Nice, educative. But my worry is some gramarians befor me still do not get it. In your 3 articles you have constantly said you all the evidence to back up your claim. You even called for a debate at some point. Truth is, they will never agree with you on this. Advice to the prof. Do not back down even if they come after you. Be sure they will. Others befor you chickened out and soon after they lick the dust. Andrew Owoye Azazi comes to mind. |

Redoil: not from the 'tresurey' nay treasury. Soludo said the money did not make it to the treasury. How? waivers, lack of remittance or stolen as crude oil! The best answer to Soludo must show that:- 1. there are no waivers. 2. all agencies remitted every dime. 3. crude oil was no stolen. no need of evidence just be on record as denying or rebutting the facts Tangentially and SPECIFICALLY. Calling Soludo names, EVEN IF THEY ARE HIS BAPTISMAL NAMES DOES NOT ANSWER HIS CLAIM. The average Nigeria knows little or nothing except that "SOMETHING" must be responsible for widespread poverty. In the spirit of brotherhood and turn by turn politics. we can also choose to just look elsewhere. shouldn't we? 4 Likes 1 Share |

A professor of contradiction.... On one hand Soludo sees the rebasing of the economy as a mere " statistical exercise " and here he is using the "mere" statistics to buttress the claim of the "missing 30 trillion". Again he complains that we rely more on world bank figures to provide legitimacy yet he is quoting the Financial times and the Economists. I think Soludos forte should be theoritical economics and not in actually running one. Until Soludo undertakes a comprehensive research of the Nigerian economy as NOI did to get to the " mere rebased GDP " no one will take him serious 6 Likes |

davitogreat: Its either u r an erratic ignoramus or u simply cant read to understand. How much does Nigeria make from sales of of crude daily? How much from import duties, immigrations, VIO(drivers licence) n other parastals? How much from taxes? Etc..... Sum them up n add them it far exceeds the budget allocations..... Now ask urself where did all the summed money go to? How come our foreign reserves are depleted? Did the monies go there? Or may be they put it in the central bank? But the former CBN governor claimed money was missing.... Or maybe it developed wings n flew away I guess u will understand better now..... I had to.break it down for u. Good luck in grasping 6 Likes 1 Share |
