soe:It's not gas flaring. Click on the link and zoom in, you'll see the different states that has more power supply. Surprisingly from the map, Niger Delta has more power supply than other regions which begs the question - why is power supply very poor in Edo state? Modified* You may be right about the gas flaring but me thinks it's mainly the Niger Delta region experiencing that. 1 Like

KoloOyinbo: Even at just 33,000ft above the ground you will not see a light source this big not to even talk of a resolution that covers about 3 to 5 countries. I didn't say mineral deposits glow at night, I said the map is at best a representation of something like mineral deposits. 2 Likes |

My opinion about the map: The areas which are illuminated indicates higher concentration of light source, either from commercial or residential buildings. So, since the lights are clustered, the intensity of the light there would be more. Meaning that those states have smaller inhabited land mass. Compare that with states where people are not clustered due to land limitation and notice that the intensity of light in those areas area low. For example; you may have 1000 light bulbs in a state like Imo state and it will glow while with 2000 light bulbs in a state like Borno, it will still remain dark. Intensity is proportional to the output from the source ( assuming all distance are equal; the factor /| which is wavelenght of light is constant) 1 Like |

bodejohn: Try looking at the MANY photos of the earth from space at night. Cities and Major town are easily identifiable by the lights. Resolution covering 3 to 5 countries? What does that mean I am confused. Resolution is the clarity of an image and the ability to distinguish objects not some sort of geographical coverage. How do I insert a picture here? If I could I would show you some lovely night time shots from space. |

The different is clear, look at d south west with light, I strongly believed in APC political philosophy, as I appreciate the birth of the party by giving serious challenge to PDP that enhance competitive democracy which could leads to viable change in Nigeria. Vote Buhari/Osinbajo Vote for #Change. |

Paulpaulpaul:Are you sure you know Nigeria's geography very well? From the map, the only illuminated area in the S.west is the Lagos region. In fact, offshore, S.south & S.east are more illuminated than S.west! S.west starts after the boundary of Edo state, you then get Ondo but S.east areas of Aba & Onitsha/Asaba region are more illuminated than S.west bar Lagos! 4 Likes |

Missy89: Yes. But mostly from the flaring although the offshore installations do emit direct light as well. If you see a picture like this of Europe or the UK the Oil Rig clusters in the North Sea are well visible. |

PapaBrowne: Illiteracy is a disease. All those illuminated areas in the delta are actually due to gas flaring. Nothing related to development. You should be even ashamed that billions of cubic gases is being burnt polluting the environment instead of been tapped to power our stations. No wonder this country is in doldrums. we have too many stupid walking the streets. 1 Like |

Sad to see ignorant people praising the government for plunging them into darkness. Go and check the night pictures of south Africa and Ghana then compare with Nigeria. This is evidence that this government has failed to provide electric power. |

Feraz: Many thanks for the information. Lets try it... This SHOULD be an image of the UK at Night. I think the satellite is NOAA. Now this might work for images off the web. (We will see when I click Submit). BUT what about images on my own laptop? WOW. It worked! The North Sea oil/gas installations can be located! 1 Like |

UnimkeAk: South-south is mainly gas flares. look at it properly. you can see some on the ocean. Southwest has the highest usage of electricity. think about it. |

100Cents: The computer adds many features. Usually country borders, sometimes (not always) state/regional boundaries, cities and arguably most important of all COASTLINES. Pictures like these will usually exhibit at least one of the above list. Daytime shots may not use as many features depending on the intended purpose of the imagery. |
