Nigerian media has proven itself to be an unprofessional and inaccurate body of journalists, bt its distortion of statements issued out of sincerity, which is obviously fuelled by the inept and directionless opposition, whose aim is to discredit the ruling government.

If this is not the case, why would it be difficult for them to tell the masses the truth.

When the president said that thieves should be called thieves, what is wrong with that. Is it not true?

Someone who stole the mobile phone of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the governor of Osun state, was sent to jail immediately. He was called a thief.
But politicians who steal millions and billions walk freely in the community, because they can pay lawyers. These ones are not called thieves, because of their influence, and because we are not under military rule. The law courts call them not thieves, but corrupt officials. Is that fair?

The president was only saying that corruption, that graft, should be called its true name, STEALING. Are there no schools in Nigeria? Have we got no brains?

The President had during the 8th presidential
media chat on Wednesday maintained that
there was a difference between the two acts.
This came several months after he first made
a similar statement.
“If somebody is a thief, he is a thief. We
should not use the word ‘corruption’ to cover
a case of stealing. Thieves should be called
thieves,” the President had said.

Stealing is a branch of corruption!
It's is the headquarter of all corruption branches... let them stop stealing and you would see changes in Nigeria.
Every other act of corruption is linked to stealing.
No sane man needs social media to explain our president's stand on stealing.

This is just a flimsy attempt to justify his careless utterance. Leaders accept blame when they make mistakes and that endears them to their followers. When they attempt to justify it, they make a fool of themselves.

He did when he said stealing is not corruption and this recent statement of his is nothing but gibberish. I see no substance in it.

If I may ask, what is stealing from the publics and what is corruption?

No we don't. But when my president makes careless utterances and instead of accepting it, he comes up with some flimsy explanation to justify it, it's really a thing of concern.
When people in the outside world read this coming from our president, I can only imagine their impression about Nigerians

God bless you OP. Let the opposition and their deluded supporters continue to twist Mr. President's innocent explanation on the difference or similarity between stealing and curroption, it will not stop the will of God from been accomplished in his life. The president was only trying to make emphasy on how theives should be called by their names instead of generalising their escapades under the word corruption but it's unfortunate how Lair Mohammed and APC had gone to the media to lie against the president but as said ealier, his fate is in God's hand.

How is corruption defined in Nigerian law?

So is the president right in terms of law? The answer is no. Under Nigeria’s Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000, the term corruption does indeed apply to crimes such as the theft or embezzlement of public funds, but also to bribery, fraud and “other related offences”.

And in all these cases, it is corruption only if the person in question has carried out the offence through the office they hold.

Section 382 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, by contrast, provides a much simpler description of theft, unrelated to the role a person take in life. A thief is simply “a person who fraudulently takes … or fraudulently converts to his own use or to the use of any other person anything capable of being stole”

Mr president is clearly wrong to claim that the theft of public funds by those in public office is simple theft, and not corruption.

OP, can you please explain what President Jonathan mean by the following quotes;

"The word Corruption is now being over-used. Ordinary stealing, people will say it is Corruption"

What is it called when public officials divert money meant for government purposes into private pockets - stealling or corruption?

Thanks in advance for your enlightenment.

I think most people still misinterprete that comment of Mr President. Corruption and stealing aren't exactly the same, though all forms of stealing come from the corruption tree....

Summary: certain comments shouldn't be credited to the president of a sovereign nation.

That single statement has cost him scores of supporters; that's the power of words!

Nothing is misinterpreted. It is the abundance of the heart, that the mouth speaks. There is no doubt what so ever that he supports corruption. In some developing countries, even collecting legitimate gifts is deemed corruption yet a whole president says on national TV that corruption is not our major problem and tries to differentiate stealing from corruption.

Ok he should tell us the one he is ready to fight, ordinary stealing or corruption

“If somebody is a thief, he is a thief. We

Stealing in the society attracts grave consequences, unlike corruption, because corruption is an umbrella name for all official or unofficial misconducts (that is, stealing, absenteeism, lateness, misappropriation of public/official properties, using government vehicles for family functions, refusing to pay tax, examination malpractice, etc)

STEALING IS GRAVE, AND SHOULD BE PUNISHED AS SUCH.

LET'S USE OUR BRAINS, AND THINK APPROPRIATELY.
