Hello, no problem. What you are referring to is called PEPSE ( Post Exposure Prophylaxis following Sexual Exposure) basically, it is a series of anti retroviral (HIV) medication (ARV) that is given to prevent acquiring the virus after possible exposure. It is not a replacement for safe sex but it is there to use if you had a condom accident or forgot to use a condom. It is licensed for use up to 72 hours (3 days) after the incident (in this case sex) as research shows that by day 5, HIV has already gotten hold of the body (to explain in simple terms). Obviously the sooner you go to take it, the better and the higher the chance of success. Beware that PEPSE is to be taken for 28 days and you need close monitoring. The best is still consistent and correct condom use, but if that fails there is PEPSE, find a HIV specialist in your area to discuss about this when ever you feel you are risk and are within the time frame mentioned above. They will tell you depending on the type of sex you had if you should go on PEPSE. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other question and people can also PM me too if you wish

This a very good thread,kudos to whoever opened it...i remember some 3 years back,i was diagnosed with Hepatitis B,but thank God now its all over...I believe that very soon a permanent cure will be found for HIV,i implore you all to have faith and pray to God,,lets all ask for his forgiveness,love and support..Theres no need hiding ur status unless u feel like,feel free to live like any other normal person afterall they didnt give you life..One Love keep us together

While hepatitis B & C are quite difficult to eliminate from the body, there are a number of drugs out there that are used for treatment.

For HIV/HBV co-infected persons, tenofovir and lamivudine are HIV drugs that also have activity against hepatitis B and remain the best combination for co-infected persons. There are other drugs useful for hepatitis B ...

Pegylated interferon, ribavirin etc are useful for Hepatitis C infection.

Those drugs are to be used while being monitored by a Gastroenterologist.. Developing Resistance is very common especially with Lamivudine..

Yeah, you are quite right. Pegylated interferon is a weekly injection that used to cost about NGN40,000 per shot a few years back. Don't know the current price. Knew a few patients that were on it.

Not sure lamivudine is prescribed as monotherapy for hepatitis B though...but its availability OTC for hepatitis could pose public health challenges since we have a generalized epidemic of HIV in Nigeria.

The name is Vlekirax pak.. Very expensive, patient needs 2 tabs a day for months and cost of 12 weeks course is 83000 dollars...
