agaugust: How is the $2 billion released from your government different from allocations made by our minister of defence? How could you contradict yourself so hard? SANDF is not broke - the budget has gone up - is not retrenching soldiers (it just recruited 4000 college graduates) It has continued with arms aquisitions - Badger IFV, 6 new vessels, new state-of-the-art heavyweight torpedoes, new patrol aircraft for the 2015/2016 financial year, A-darter production, GBADS Phase 3, Marlin Development, upgrades to Rooikat and G6 etc etc etc Augustus, I demand that you stop trolling this thread and pulling down standards with troll posts |

agaugust: Hinds Airframe is from the 1960's - so well done on destroying your own argument agaugust: How does a lack a retractable gears make it obsolete? You post like a child. |

agaugust: A-darter goes into production this year JF-17 is a dream for you |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:52am On Mar 03, 2015 |
agaugust: Yes, and a Hind will break its airframe if it crash lands. Rooivalks wheels will help cushion the fall. The Hind is an older design than the Rooivalk - by allmost 20 years - you imbvecile agaugust: And so? How is this relevant? How does it make it obsolete? agaugust: Rooivalk bid for Turkey failed because Turkey had an embargo on French defense components and the Rooivalk contains components from french engine manufacturers. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:55am On Mar 03, 2015 |
agaugust: Russia and Nigeria do not use the same Hinds - you use the monkey model Hind is nothing to be proud of, neither is the Russian airforce Rooivalk is a dedicated attack helicopter - every single gram of it is designed with one thing in mind - attack Hind is not purpose built, it is not specifically designed. Thus, as an attack helicopter, it is inferior. How is it inferior? - worse performance stats, bigger traget, cant hover in combat, smaller weapons payload, poor cabin lay-out, no crew redundancy, no slaved weapons, poor agility, poor situational awareness |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 3:56am On Mar 03, 2015 |
agaugust: Nigeria has not announced aquisition of AWACS and has not announced that AWACS is going into production. Both have been done for the A-darter. Deal with it |

Henry120: How is it obsolete? Yeah, well, not suprised its bids failed when it only became militarily operational 4 years ago. And the helicopters it was competeing against had decades of operational history. How it is french? Dont bother answering, I know that you are unable to substantiate what you say with any proof or evidence whatsoever. Troll. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 6:02am On Mar 03, 2015 |
Henry120:what factors led to that? And no it wasn't 14 bids. Selling attack helicopter is a different ball game, from selling vehicles which even the poorest country can keep them running without the OEM's support. Obsolete? Yes, the Apache might be ahead in terms of target acquisition or stuff. But in terms of the hardware or flight performance the Rooivalk comes out tops. Put in mind that sensors and avionics of the Rooivalk can be upgraded. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 6:15am On Mar 03, 2015 |
Patchesagain:The only bid I'd say it failed was the Turkish again. From 1991-94: who would buy an attack helicopter from a country on the brink of civil war? Would the manufacture able to support that system for 20+ years? 1994-99: Asian Financial crises, possibility of SA falling into instability. 2000^ Massive cuts on the defence force the project takes years to mature, Denel even announces that it will halt the development of the system. If funding remained the same, and Rooivalk was operationalised earlier with all intended systems like radar. More would've been bought. |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Nobody: 8:26am On Mar 03, 2015 |
Patchesagain: Denel has now decided that the Rooivalk, on whose development the government spent R8bn, is not commercially viable and it will not spend any new money on the helicopters. Armscor and the defence department will now have to decide whether to subsidise the maintenance of Denel's Rooivalk capability so that it can continue servicing the 12 helicopters bought by the South African Air Force over their 25-year lifespan. The other option would be for the air force to mothball the helicopters and for the costs to be written off entirely. "Liebenberg said that after Denel's failure to win the $2bn Turkey tender for 50 helicopters after giving it its best shot, the company realised that it would not be able to sell the Rooivalk anywhere else and that it could not sustain the project commercially." After 14 failed bids, there is no doubt in my mind that buyers rejected the Helicopter because it is obsolete. As to how it is French, we've been proving this over the years. There isn't any proof to show the apartheid regime could independently conceptualise and build an Helicopter. That Helicopter was built entirely on french expertise, same as on the Super Puma. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Henry120: Thank you for posting an article years and years old. An article from f*cken 2007!. That decision not to spend any more money was long overuled. This article was even before the lastest block Rooivalk which the airforce currently uses. Denel spent a bunch of money on Rooivalk after this ancient article of yours. Next time do some research before you come running here with a useless article. Rooivalk only uses French components in it's engine. The airframe, optronics and weapons systems are South African. No amount of your jealousy will change that. |

saengine: It's a 2007 article. So tell us what how things have gone better? Since the article......... *The Rooivalk has gone on to fail miserably other bids. * The Production has since been closed * The SAAF now only have 10 Helicopters in service for an over 1.2 million KM square area, as a Rooivalk was damaged beyond repair and another used in an institute. * The Rooivalk again showed it's an expensive piece of obsolete metal, with a high running cost running cost and poor outdated avionics. The article may have been written in 2007, but it is as up to date as a few seconds ago. The Rooivalk is more of a french helicopter than South-African. I'm only stating the facts, and understand that it hurts. 2 Likes |

Henry120: How desperate and jealous can you get? Your PRIMARY and LEAD argument was that the decision was taken that the Rooivalk is not commercially viable. Now that you can't hold on to that argument, you desperately try to move in another direction. Be a man and stick to your guns and battle against this 2014 article below: Cape Town - Government will push state-owned arms manufacturers Denel to increase production of the Rooivalk attack helicopter, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said on Monday. “We have to push them to do it and by doing so we have to assist them in whatever way to manufacture more because... everybody now wants a Rooivalk and they want a Rooivalk from South Africa,” she told journalists in Cape Town. “The Rooivalk Attack Helicopter was for the first time deployed by the UN... and played a pivotal role in the demise of the M23 rebel armed group in the eastern part of the DRC,” the minister said. The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, known as Monusco, has praised the effectiveness of the attack helicopter. Its success generated interest from elsewhere in the world, meaning the defence industry would have to increase manufacturing capacity. “Our defence industry has no choice. Even if we did not have the capacity to do some of these things the truth of the matter is wherever you go right now people are talking about the Rooivalk and people would want to order the Rooivalk... so our defence industry must be beefed up, must be assisted as we have been doing,” she said. Sales of the helicopter would boost the economy and the standing of the country's defence industry. “I think it's good for the country. It's good for our economy,” the minister said. “It's good for the defence industry... because there's a lot of competition out there. It's good that they are beginning to identify South Africa as one of those countries that can play a very key role in supplying some of that equipment.” Sapa 1 Like 1 Share |

Henry120: Your article said no further money is to be spent on Rooivalk from 2007. Why post that if it is no longer valid? Production has close since when? Were they still producing Rooivalk airframes when that article was written? You see how you keep talking out your a.ss? You havent the slightest clue about Rooivalk avionics and when they were upgraded so keep your ignorance to yourself. |

Boko Haram beheading two men....we're counting its week 1 of March As USA,UK,RSA,Chinese etc..analysists said Boko Haram is a result of SOCIO ECONOMIC PROBLEMS in Nigeria. The north and central Nigeria has the highest POVERTY 80%-90% and Illiteracy rate in Nigeria. People in these areas have never seen an ELECTRIC BULB AND WATER TAPS in their lives .... Source:UNDP,WHO,UN HABITAT As long as these problems remain UNRESOLVED Boko Haram and in the poverty stricken southern states MEND,MASSOB will still exist in Nigeria. Pity the likes of August and other flat heads are familiar with UNDP,WHO,UN Habitat etc...please see where you stand before making fools of yourselves.
