Thanks for your contribution. While growing up I've always known 'egbe' to be the bird that preys on chicken when its mother is unwary and each time the bird swoops down and lifts a chick, people around would shout 'egbe e burula nwa okuko o'. In English, hawks are known to prey on chicks (poultry) and kites on insects. More correctly, 'egbe' = hawk.

The substitution of "e" for "a" is not peculiar to Ukwuani, it's just that people from that part of Igboland seem to always dwell on their perceived difference from the central Igbo.

Nkanu people in Enugu also substitute "e" for "a", for example the Igbo numbers in Nkanu are:

One- ohu

two- ebuo/ ebunor

three- etor

four- enor

five- ise

six- ishii

seven- Esaa

Eight- Esator

Notice the substitution of "e" for "a" there, this same same substitution is observed throughout Nkanu speech forms, some others they even have reversed substitution between a and e.

for example, cloth in Nkanu dialects is "afe" where as central Igbo is "efe", plate is "afere", instead of "efere".


Still you won't see any Nkanu man trying to hold unto these minor differences.

I grew up in the east..besides these animals can easily be found in some forest in the East,or cross river areas,don't forget cross river shares boarder with Abia,so there is always a link,just that urbanization an deforestation has realy impacted negatively on wide-Life...I grew up seeing most the animals during farming season,mostly time of bush-clearing.
