Hello all! Please I need a step by step guide on processing my F1 visa. I am going for my graduate studies in the US this Fall (August) and I am expecting my I-20 from the School. They are providing me with full funding. Is there something I should be doing before the I 20 arrives? I already have the formal letter of admission with funding. When and how can I begin the visa processing? Thanks so much in advance!

You would need to pay your sevis fee. Its either you wait for your I-20 to arrive before paying the SEVIS fee or you can ask the school to send you a scanned copy so you can pay your sevis fee. Sevis fee is $200.(https://www.fmjfee.com/i901fee/desktop/index.jsp?view=desktop)

When you pay your sevis fee or you get your I-20 you can fill your DS160 (https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/). When you fill your DS160 form, you can go pay for your visa fee payment at any GTBank branch. You might need to walk in there and ask them for the amount now that exchange rates are fluctuating. GTbank will request for your passport. When you pay your visa fee then you can go online and register (http://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-appointmentschedule.asp), then you can book your appointment. You need to decide where you want to have your interview (Lagos or Abuja).

Documents needed:
1. I-20
2. Sevis Fee Receipt.
3. DS 160 confirmation page.
4. Appointment page and receipt from GTbank
5. Bank Statement
6. You degree result and other documents that you feel can enhance or boost your chance.

All the best

bro, sorry i have a questions for you, is servis fee required for the private pilot course ? how did you pay yours ?

Ofcourse!
You're and exchange student so you have to pay it.
It was part the initial fees I wired to school... They paid it for me and sent me the receipt!

I cannot thank you enough for this detailed explanation! Please, pardon my ignorant questions, is Sevis I-901 the same as Sevis? Why do I need the scanned copy, would I need to upload it online? Also, would I need a bank statement, since the School is giving me full tuition waiver and a stipend. Thank you so much!

Yes, you need a bank statement. Sevis I-901 is thesame with sevis. You don't necessarily need a scanned copy, for you to be able to pay for sevis fee, you need your sevis number and its contained in your I-20. You cannot see the sevis number until you have your I-20.

Its either you go to cotonou, benin republic to make the payment or if you have anyone in US pay for you which would be easier and faster.

Nope you dont have to. In a week or two you should get a mail to that effect. Most schools are currently making decisions on that. God will grant you one....Say AMEN!
Na wa for this Purdue ppl o. My advisor talk say there is no funding for what I was admitted for.

I actually got admission for Professional Master of Science in International Agribusiness (in Agricultural Economics). I later checked my admission letter and saw that it's a self-funded program and students there aren't eligible for tuition waivers and etc within the dept...imagine.

I still dey disturb the woman (advisor) that she should please look into my case and dat I can serve as her assistant in any capacity. grin

Also, for what I was admitted for...though my advisor said the students write papers, it's a non-thesis programme.
I just dey confuse now...wen me I don dey imagine how research go be like...and it isn't the best programme for someone dat wants to advance to PhD since the 'traditional' (na so dem cal am) Agricultural Economics programme where students write thesis, are funded etc. dey dia.

This is the last mail my advisor sent me:
"This degree is primarily for students who plan to work in the industry, especially multinational firms. Purdue’s own PHD program does not admit professional MS students. However, you are required to take  the same Microeconomic theory, Macroeconomic theory, Econometrics, Programming, courses together with research track (all funded) MS students. You can take any MS courses offered in our department. You don’t write a thesis, but write a none-thesis paper.  It is up to the students how good a research paper can be. I once advised a non-thesis international student who is now a PHD student in the US fully funded as an RA, partly because we turned her non-thesis paper into a journal publication, while most research track MS students do not have.    Please consider all carefully before you make this big decision involving a lot of $$.  We truly welcome you to our program but will understand whatever your decision."

Please, what do y'all think? Should I just focus on hopefully getting admission into the other schools I applied to? Thanks.

Good morning, please I need advise on this:

I deferred my admission last year fall till fall this year (September). I just received the form I-20 for this year and the Sevis Number on it is the same as the one on the form I-20 that was sent to me last year September. I had to defer last year's admission because the admission came late and I could not get an early visa interview date, so I cancelled the appointment with the embassy.
I know I have to pay a new visa fee, but I am not sure if I have to pay a new Sevis fee. Also, I am confused if I should use the same profile I created last year on www.ustraveldocs.com to schedule a new appointment.

Please I will really appreciate your advise on this. Thank you.

I'm sorry but from what you've described here you simply didn't do your homework prior to applying!
How didn't you figure out you were being admitted into a non thesis program? I'm very sure if you checked the department page that info would be there. It has to be.

Obviously you also didn't mail the departmental contact about funding prior to applying as well because if you did you'd also be informed.

Funding is usually figured out during the admission process and its a competitive process.
Needless to say, telling a departmental advisor you can serve as an assistant sounds like childsplay. This isn't Nigeria where people can take unilateral decisions without consulting the faculty board and this is done in conjunction with the graduate school.
My wording may sound harsh but you're making it seem like Purdue is at fault here but the only person i can fault is you for not doing adequate research.

A non thesis MS program is a no-no.. Unless you plan to return back to Nigeria after your studies. No point doing an MS program in a science based field where you can't progress to a PhD unless under dire circumstances.

No offence intended by this post.

Thanks for the post. And I didn't take offence.

I know what I applied for (MSc in Agricultural economics, which is a thesis programme), not this. This non-thesis programme is a recently established track in my Department.

And I just got my admission three days ago, and that's why I'm just raising dust. Or how do I figure out what I'm being admitted for without an admission letter? I ensured I applied (to the thesis programme) before the deadline for students that are interested in funding. You mean I should have been bombarding them with mails after I applied? Please enlighten me.

While I am not playing a blame game but want to seek for advice as regards my case, it was Purdue that decided to give me admission into this other aspect of my course and not that I ignorantly stated I wanted it. Maybe they had a lot of qualified applicants and had to 'push' some of us into the 'non-thesis programme', because that was what I could infer from previous mails from my advisor. It's now my choice to accept it or not. And this non-thesis programme automatically doesn't get funding.

So, what is my fault? And what homework should I have done? When I didn't even envisage this?

I appreciate your advice, thanks.

I think you should have emailed the department about funding opportunities for international students BEFORE APPLYING
Ask them How competitive are these awards and how many students are granted in a given term

Many schools have these non thesis option to milk money off rich international studentrs (Even Harvard does this)
Anyway no point crying over spilled milk. If youre financially well off you can go for it but if not then i dont think its a wise option for your career.
Discuss with your parents and know what the best option is for you.
However from a professional standpoint a non thesis MS isnt the way forward especially if you're going to spend a lot of money on it.

Ebdib I am a fall 2016 hopeful.
Is it appropriate for me to start mailing the schools
I intend applying to about funding now?
From my findings, most application window open by August. Can I start mailing
them now in March, asking about funding opportunities?
NB: I have mailed most of them about my interest in applying
to their programs already.

Any other suggestions, please?

Thank you very much; I now get the full picture. Again, on the bank statement issue, this is a phd study, so I was hoping that I wouldn't need it since it is fully funded (tuition, living expenses,...). I'm sorry to be asking the same question again. Also, is this $200 different from the fee I'll make at GT bank? Thanks a billion!

Master's Degree: Thesis Option
Master's Degree: Report Option
Master's Degree: Course Work Option.

But I wanted to choose the course work option.

Yes please. No time.
But I'd chill a bit till May when most schools must have ratified their fall 2015 intake.
Start asking about funding. Average GRE scores for accepted applicants. Any other info that you deem necessary.
This will make you slash off some schools off your shortlist
