bigfrancis21: One of my step-grandmas was Igala (she's dead now), so make I put mouth small. The language is very much Yoruboid. My Lagos-raised cousins who are fluent in Yoruba always made comments about how they could decode what my Igala step-grandma was saying. In their own words: "Igala just be like Yoruba. Yoruba person fit use sense decode am." But due to complete territorial isolation from other Yoruba groups ( their territory is isolated from the Okun Yorubas by Igbirraland) and close relations with Igbos and Idomas over the centuries, a lot of their words now have a non-Yoruba ring to it. For example, the sounds 'ch' and 'gw' are characteristically non-Yoruba, but have filtered into Igala through Idoma and Igbo where those sounds are characteristically in use. So that while the Yoruba say ise for work and somi for wet, Igala says uche and chomi. And while the Yoruba say ewa for ten, Igala says egwa. (Note the change from s to ch and w to gw which makes those words look non-Yoruba as Yoruba dialects typically do not use those sounds.) You'll probably see a worldist if you typed "Igala Yoruba worldist" in Google, if you wanna do further comparison of the languages. 2 Likes 1 Share |
