"Innocent Until Proven Guilty”

Responding to the grouse of the APC Senators, the spokesman for the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, said although there were allegations against Senator Obanikoro, there was no court decision, condemning Senator Obanikoro for any crime.

Well, what we know as a matter of fact is that there were allegations against Senator Musiliu Obanikoro

“But in our law and the Constitution of Nigeria, anything that is a mere allegation, that is not in any way a court decision, is nothing but a mere allegation and every citizen of Nigeria is deem to be innocent until proven guilty.

“And even the Senators, who addressed the press conference and spoke about the qualification and non-qualification of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro are enjoying this privilege because some of them have EFCC cases and they are still in the Senate because of this privilege of being innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

Senator Abaribe said that the APC Senator’s statement was an attempt to convict somebody when the person had not been convicted in a court of law.

“They cannot enjoy that privilege themselves and sit in this Senate and then turn around and say that somebody else cannot enjoy that privilege.

“And the laws of Nigeria is very clear. You are innocent until you are proven guilty and that is what played out on the floors of the Senate.

“The senate in its wisdom, having known that this is the law of Nigeria and this is the Constitution of Nigeria, and that every Nigerian is entitled to this privilege, went ahead to do what it is supposed by law to do which is confirmation of somebody that is on the floor of the Senate who has not been convicted of anything,” he stressed.

DId the senate even bother to investigate the allegations?

We should stop kidding ourselves in this country......This is not an APC/PDP issue, This a Nigerian issue

Truth is that MOST Nigerians don't understand the workings of constitutional democracy; separation of powers and/or independence of different arms of government...maybe as a result military hangover mentality...

They want Jonathan to throw about power as president while people should be jailed once condemned by section of media or opposition as if these are judiciary...

APC senators are damned wrong and displayed crass ignorance...

Apc itself abuses everything democracy holds. I have respect for them in their individual state affairs but truth is, they are not matured for politics on the federal level yet. GEJ is a body of shock abssover while apc as a whole are just sick crying babies. Whatever you do to a sick baby, they 'll still cry because the cause is in their system not with their mum or dad or siblings.

Jonathan a very desperate insincere president and a best friend to corruption. If a president can closely embrace impunity even upto this point when he's trying to canvass for votes, then we should know what to expect if ever he is reelected.

Many of us know in our heart of heart that this is not the kind of president we want, unless you're not a true Nigerian or you've let ethnic sentiments and a few naira notes cloud your better judgement.

Looking at the history books of fully formed democracies, our democracy is young and at an evolving stage which explains the imperfections of the PDP & APC. In order to keep evolving, we need to be able to CHANGE! governments till we finally get it right or else we will be on one position forever. This is a fact!

APC may not be a perfect party yet but I say with conviction that things can never be this terrible under General Buhari such that the people will now be taken for granted to a point of derision. Things like impunity, corruption, unaccountability will be on the fast decline.

Let us embrace CHANGE.

Well said. 1millon likes. Same way we see so many persons blaming GEJ for street roads not constructed in the States. Many still fail to differentiate between the various tiers of government. Imagine someone complaining of high store (shop) rent on GEJ or even imposition of a king on GEJ. May God help us o. God bless President GEJ and grant him wisdom to pilot the affairs of this country till 2019.

My brother, you're wrong. The fact that you aren't aware doesn't mean that nothing is being done...Agencies have to silently do their work and not to advertise daily whenever they cough...When Retired Justice Uwais son left for ISIS fight; that was the point most people knew that security agencies have been on him...Government and governance isn't all about showmanship which most APC governors like Aregbesola; Rochas; Oshiomole etc do...hence pulling wools over the electorates eyes and making them follow sheepishly without questioning...

Finally; on this case, Obanikoro has a case in court. Going by our CONSTITUTION, which we must respect, he remains innocent until convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction. Even the Ekitigate issue isn't enough to stop him until a court of competent jurisdiction says so. NOTE that; if we go by APC mode of reasoning here; staunch APC senators in the house like Senator Danjuma Goje, Senator Saraki and others should also vacate their senate seats because they have cases with EFCC...

In US people resign because of protest
In Britain people resign because of innocent comments they make
in the so called China, people resign because of allegation
even in the so called ruthless Russia people quit their job because people make silly statement at them

But in my motherland Nigeria

people get appointed for stealing money in Billions and trillions - afterall stealing isnt corruption
People get appointed for rigging election - afterall the allegation is from the opposition party lets humiliate them
People get appointed for just being an ex convict
people get appointed for being a practicing militant or ex militant
people get appointed for just being corrupt
People get governorship appointment for helping to godfather to steal money
people get elected for being able to talk trash

while same in my motherland Nigeria
people get sacked for trying to conduct a free and fair election
people get sacked for exposing a fraud
people get sacked for attending enemies birthday
people get sacked for changing Party
people get sacked for being too just and righteough and not being flexible to bending the rules

please before someone says im supporting APC or PDP you guys should help me fill in the blank spaces lol

Spot on! If we go by the analogy of the APC reps, people like Saraki,Remi Tinubu and the likes, shouldn't be in the senate. However, should Obanikoro be found guilty of the accusations against him,it's only logical and ethical that he faces the music. But where a court of law hasn't pronounced him guilty,He should be accorded the rights he deserves as a former minister. Afterall,it is public knowledge that Tinubu is a criminal but if you ask APC folks, they'd ask you which court of law promounced him as one. So whatever is good for the goose,is good for the gander.
