Your masters most definitely would be in structural engineering from which part of the modules you'l be taught would be theory of plates and shells. A possible thesis topic could be "SOLUTION TO THE BIHAMONIC GOVERNING EQUATION FOR PLATES USING CLASSICAL METHODS" You might as well need to write a program on your findings at the end.

Its applications? Numerous... The behavior of end plates connection or its failure mechanism in huge oil pipe racks etc can better be captured by finite element plate analysis. proper deleanation of bearing and shearing stresses during a loadout offhore lift analysis can also be understood by discretised plate analysis..etc
