The supply of electricity across the country will worsen in coming days due to the loss of about 800 megawatts of power as a result of the blasting of the Escravos Lagos Gas Pipeline at midnight of Wednesday.

According to the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, the recent damage was done by vandals, who ruptured the ELGP with an explosive device at Egwa, near Batan, in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Mrs. Kande Daniel, the minister said this attack, being the fourth this year, came only hours after repairs on an earlier attack of Sunday, March 1, 2015 were completed and gas were being piped through the pipeline again.

Nebo, in a statement on Thursday night, said the exact extent of the damage was being assessed but the impact was the loss of about 200 mmscf/d of gas, equivalent of about 800MW per day of generated power.

According to Nebo, it has become clear that the vandals, who perpetrate these acts are intent on crippling the power sector and bringing untold hardship on Nigerians for either political or financial gains or both.

He said although pipeline vandalism had held power generation at less than 4,000MW as against currently available capacity of over 5,000MW, government was not deterred from its commitment to provide security for its oil and gas, as well as power infrastructure.

The minister stressed that the nation could now conveniently generate and wheel out over 4,500MW, but for gas supply disruptions through vandalism.

Nebo also appealed to Nigerians to become more vigilant and report suspicious movements and actions to security agencies for effective protection of public infrastructure for the common good of Nigeria.

despite all the billions of naira allocated to the Niger-Delta militants to guard the pipelines, there are still cases of pipeline vandalism especially in the niger delta?
Me think the militants intentionally blow up these pipelines just to get more juicy contracts from the FG and put the nation to suffer epileptic power outage.

Watch how Femi Fani Kayode and PDP will blame APC for the vandalization of the pipelines.

Worsen shocked I just wish this government can actually make a headway in this power sector. I'm tired of using my generator to pump water. The last time we had electricity in my area is 4 days ago

Oh dear.

Thanks PDP....(Especially for removing Prof Nnaji.....way to go!).

On a more serious note....the trouble is that we have a serious generation problem.

Since every Nigerian loves to hate Nuclear power.....I suggest we collabo with Niger Republic....and build giant solar farms in the Sahara desert....could help raise our generation. Oh...and more HEP dams....and more gas powered plants.

And let us stop hearing about the transformation in power....because it does not exist. We are still far behind.

Modified.....About time we set up a Pipeline security Police....and equipped them with helicopters, drones, and weapons to sniff out pipeline vandals.

Opposition(APC) vandals hell-bent on making Jonathan look bad in the eyes of his people.
Things like this makes me think twice about boko haram's insurgency in the north.
Anyhow, we've decided. GEJ or no one else.
God bless Nigeria.

NYSC stands for national youth service corps but to people WHO have actually went through it often refer to it as now your suffering continues.
The condition in which most graduate are subjected to in the name of service to their fatherland is so pathetic. After years of struggle in higher institution of learning graduates are subjected to another struggle in the name NYSC.
With the current condition of living, N19, 800, is not enough for most students up keep. Though, the current president has promise to increase the corps members allowance from N19, 800 to N50, 000 in one of his interview with pressmen in 2014, the president has also reaffirm that he has a special package for youth corps members, no body know how this package is going to be but many hope that it will include the allowance increment.
The program should be improved because it is not career wise, corps member are not sent to the right place during their secontinue reading

Light has been terrible for the past one week before the "blasting" of the gas pipeline. Are they saying the terribleness will become worse?

Ex-militants blow up crude oil
pipeline in Delta
on march 20, 2013 at 1:06 pm in news
Facebook Share Twitter Share
By Emma Amaize
WARRI- EX-MILITANTS, in the early hours of
Tuesday, bombed a crude oil pipeline, belonging
to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company,
NPDC, located between Evwreni Edjekota and
Ewu in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
A source told Vanguard, “ Those who carried out
the explosion are the same group that exploded
a gas pipeline in Ughelli axis, recently.
Their
anger is that they were not documented for the
post amnesty programme by the Federal
Government after surrendering their arms to the
Joint Task Force in 2001.”
“They gave the Federal Government a seven-day
ultimatum to document them or return their
arms, but nothing was done about the matter,
that was why they struck again today
(yesterday)”, he added.
However, a top official of the Amnesty Office,
Abuja, who disowned the ex-militants, told
Vanguard, “We are not even sure they are ex-
militants, it is you (Vanguard) that is telling me
now. Anybody, who is an ex-militant that
surrendered his arms and accepted amnesty,
took an oath that he would not return to such
criminal act anymore and so, I do not believe
they are ex-agitators.”
“If they are, they have broken the agreement
and my take is that security agents should
identify them and take care of them because
they are criminals. The amnesty programme is
not an everlasting programme, some people
have been documented for the programme and
this office is handling their training,” he added.
It was gathered that the ex-militants who
exploded the crude oil pipeline did not meet with
resistance and returned to base safely.
The action committee of the third phase ex-
militants that launched the attack, in a
statement, said, “At the expiration of the seven-
day ultimatum, third phase ex-militants, who the
Federal Government did not register, about
12.26 am, this morning (Tuesday) , in Ughelli
axis in Delta State, blew up a pipeline, located
between Evwreni Edjekota and Ewu.”
“The fire is still on as we send this message,
this is just the beginning in the Niger-Delta
region. We will not sleep until government gives
us our amnesty slots. For the avoidance of
doubt, we are the undocumented ex-militants
who the federal government asked to submit all
the arms they have early 2011, yet they refused
to include us in the recent documentation.
“All our reports are in the hands of government
and they excluded us, we are still begging the
government to give us back our arms and we
gave them seven-days ultimatum to reason with
us. Nevertheless, government did not respond,
this is to say government has called for war.
“We will start exploding all flow stations and
pipelines belonging to oil companies in Delta
state, now we want to face the oil companies if
they did not intervene in this matter and resolve
the problem.
“Another five-day ultimatum is hereby given for
the companies to to act, they should be warned,
next time, it is operation no mercy”, statement
added
