I don't really care if battling on a beat is archaic or not. I'm into rap battling for fun, to enjoy myself, so to speak and that's it. If something is not going to be fun to me I won't do it unless I'm getting paid for it. I never liked anything acapella in general right from the start. I can be conservative at times.

Darkrebel if you can pay me to battle you, then I'm down. grin grin

you don't like acapella cos you suck at it.its better you work on it than ignore.. a situation may arise when there wouldn't be a beat and you still have to battle.... i gave you that link so you could read the comments. Rapping on beat is cool and better for freestyle stage battles. You don't even get amazing lines from them cos rappers have to squeeze lines and rhyme schemes in just to fit in the beat. Lyricism is most times mediocre and punchlines are most times weak. This is a rap battle not a rap song. but acapella allows for better punchlines..setups..more dynamics...etc

state 5 quotables from any jin's battles on beat, or from scribble jam or from 106 and park or any stage rap brawl that isn\t most times generic or even stale.... you can hardly bring out quotables.. but you can bring out up to 7 quotables in a single Illmaculate's verse.....

you need to evolve...

Tell me... Grown men bars OR Jokes? ...which do you guys prefer?
both! But i get what you mean. That's why if i were to really pick one outta the two, i'd go for the former.
I luv bars that are extremely creative that they might not be funny but when one hears them, one's like . . . 'Daaaaammnnn'!
I mean, the kyna punchlines that leave one speechless.

@ Mikuz..

this is from a Rap battle vet

I keep hearing from kids who are not following the current rap battle scene, keep saying this format is a joke and improvised freestyle battling over a beat is better.

Well, they are not a joke; in fact they have evolved. You see, improvised freestyles contain so much filler rhymes in order for the emcee to compose a bar or punchline. This acapella format truly allows for the emcee to showcase his penmanship. So the battles are more rounded by incorporating bars, complex rhymes, performance, delivery, candace, multi-syllabic rhymes, punchlines, rhyme schemes, and of course, freestyle in the form of rebuttals & improvised bars. Bars over filler any day!

Plus these battles are far more entertaining that the battles of before. These battles are far more personal, vicious, aggressive, and versatile.

I interviewed Lush One of GrindTime / KOTD about the Canibus vs dizaster battle (before it happened) and asked him about the current rap battling format... here is what he had to say:

"HHUG: The current format of hip hop battles has shifted from the improvisation freestyle over a beat, to a more structure-driven written approach without a beat and a mic. Can you describe the current format and its shift?

LushOne: Well, first of all thats somewhat of a misconception. Accapella battling with written verses has been very prominent, especially in New York City, since the 80s. Some of the most heralded battles of all-time such as Percee P vs. Lord Finesse, Loaded Lux vs. Murder Mook, etc. were all in this format. Freestyle battling was put on blast on a mass media level by the movie 8 Mile and Eminem, even though it too has existed since the 70s/80s. The current format of battling is the most modern in that it strips everything away but the voice. We are focused 100% on all of the intricies of the performance of the MC, including rhythm. Also, although the material is prewritten, improvisational rebuttals and freestyles that incorporate the environment have become an imperative part of any successful emcee in this format's arsenal."

I don't suck at it, stop spreading lies. You can't judge me presently with my first ever acapella rap. I'm doper and lethal now.grin

I don't need to work on it since I can already do it. Acapella battle to me is like niggas rhyming insults at each other. The only difference between two bus conductors shouting at each other and acapella battle is rhymes. Nothing else.

The link you posted, there were some other niggas who do not like acapella battles like me too. You come dey sound like say everyone was talking about how archaic rapping on a beat is.

My top 3 battle rappers and role models : Big L, Canibus and Mode 9 all spat their best ever punchlines on beats. So to claim that rapping on beats limits is lyricism is false. It tells me that you don't know how to ride a beat sef. grin

The major reason why I don't watch KOTD, Total Slaughter battles is because they don't rap on beats and they spit the most horrible puns ever. SMH

lmfao !! hahahah

apart from big l..the other two don't even have any battle records. (i mean on beat) I doubt modenine has ever even battled on a stage before....

I have not even seen any punchline from modenine that would be wowing in a proper rap battle. Canibus is better off doing self appraisal and braggadocio . He's not funny and his style is too rigid for a rap brawl.....that's why Dizaster beat his withered asss and ended his pathetic career for good cheesy ..The same way immortal technique lost a rap brawl on 106 and park..he had the better lines but he found it hard to fit his wicked ass lines and flow perfect, but the other dude with mediocre lines had a better flow and won

You don't have to battle on stage to be a battle rapper na. You of all people should know this. Modenine and Canibus do BATTLE RAP.

Everyone doesn't have to be a fan of Modenine. What is wowing to you might not be wowing to me and vice versa.

Ask any seasoned observer, even Coogar ll tell you that Canibus would have beaten Dizaster hands down if he failed to pull his IPAD. He was better than Diz is every aspect. Diz is overrated, all he knows how to do is to shout while spitting empty lines. No wonder Cassidy cremated him. cheesy

canibus is a punchline king!
he lost against dizaster cos he didn't prepare for the battle. he had an accident few days before the event. his arm was even in cast on the day of the event.

i can't believe darkrebel is saying canibus doesn't have any battle on record - the best diss track in history was by canibus. 2nd round knockout - ll cool j diss was legendary.

Understand me...

when I said he didn't have battle records, I meant face to face rap brawls on beat (forget Diss tracks) (even Nas did diss tracks) I even exempted Big L cos he had battle records.. Mikuz said they were his favourite battlers cos they battled on beat not acapella..that's why I told him that even canibus had no battle record on beat...

Please stop making excuses for him.. He was informed ..why did he come unprepared? He choked and lost... no need for excuses.. His arm was injured not his mouth..

if he was really indisposed, then he should have pulled a no-show

so because he lost means he is not good? do you know how many battle rappers that have lost because they didn't prepare? he shouldn't even have honoured the event - he was ill. he had a scar on his head & a cast on his arm.

even dizaster gave him props after the battle - he said there's no single battle rapper today that can claim he wasn't inspired by canibus. he redefined rap. go back to the 90s and listen to his projects!

I edited my previous post.. he should never have showed up if he knew he wasn't fit or prepared....
But since he did then he should accept whatever comes..

Canibus is still a lyrical demon..no doubt... I just feel a little humour in his material would make it more appealing, especially if its a rap battle verse

50 bucks says Eminem would rip Canibus if they battle now( Kotd ..Acapella format)

Eminem would be straight clowning dawg!! and everyone would be reeling in laughter while Bis' would get the crowd easily bored with all the seriousness he usually brings ... he may even start talking of how he's gonna scientifically murder em' cheesy .

I respect Canibus..his penmanship is legendary.
but you get bored listening to the same thing over and over.. What he lacks is Creativity

why did t-rex show up at SM4 & lost woefully to charlie clips? why did charlie clips show up at KOTD to lose woefully to charron? you forget money is involved & if the main event doesn't hold, organisers would have to refund thousands of fans.

charlie clips actually called organik that he wouldn't be making it cos he lost an aunt. organik insisted he must come even if he's not prepared for the battle. organik would rather have a wack battle than refund KOTD fans...
