Chapter 21


Wande and Tade retired to the bed after ensuring Joseph and Josephine had been well tucked in for the night.
Tade had just switched on the TV when Wande held his hand impulsively. All through the evening, she had tried to get the moment right.

"Baby." She moved closer to Tade under the sheet. Tade cringed, and turned his back. He increased the volume of the tV and listened to ten o'clock news on channels like his life depended on it. He found it difficult to pretend like he cared about Wande. Se*x with her had been almost zero for sometime now.

"Yes." He managed to say with a forced smile.

"I'm sorry to bother you," she said, but didn't let go of his hand. " I'm worried about your spending pattern." She said.


He paused. Glanced down at the fingers holding his hands, shook them off, then looked at her face. He adjusted himself and leaned on his elbow, almost facing her. "My spending?" He asked with raised voice.
Wande sat up, supporting herself with two pillows. She held his gaze and inched her face up to meet his. She had almost choked when she saw the financial report earlier in the day. He had withdrawn over N8M in two months with nothing to show for it. As usual, Wande had stood up in his defense before the auditor and his mother. But for how long could the company endure this? The forensic auditor had asked. The Williams dynasty was simply nose diving, she knew she had to save it if Joseph and Josephine were ever going to meet it.

She brought out a freshly typed financial report from the bedside drawer and handed it to him. "Babe, you spent an average of N1M per week in the past two months, apart from your salary. Williams dynasty can't support ---"

He flipped his leg over the edge of the bed and stood up in anger, interrupting her with his sudden movement.

"What do you mean?" He wasn't smiling. He walked slowly to the mini fridge tucked somewhere near the bed and picked a half full bottle of red wine. He poured some into a clean wine cup and downed about half in one single gulp before facing his distraught wife. She looked at him, scared of his reaction.

"Look here woman, I invested the money on a building project. Once I'm paid, I'll pay back into the company account."

She felt herself pale.

Her eyes became misty. She felt like screaming shut up, on top of her voice, but she dared not. The last time she challenged him, she'd earned herself a thorough beating.

"Babe, I'm sorry. I'm just worried about the future, my mum's upkeep----"

"Shut up, Wande! You can as well go and stay with her if you care that much. I run things here. she is entitled to forty percent while I control sixty. It's in my name!" He told her matter of fact.

"Tade, I have not changed my car in two years, I have not been anywhere decent on vacation in one year, my children and I need a change of wardrobe, yet I am a Williams!" She managed to say, trying hard not to raise her voice and invite his wrath.

He moved to her on the bed, pulled her up with the tiny strap of her lingerie and made her face him. "I placed you on N100K allowance per month, what have you been doing with the money? Giving your lawyer boyfriend? Hmm, no, he is rich. Why is he not taking care of you?"

"You are my husband, besides, segun is just a friend! Please!" She pleaded. He was making his hand into a fist, she tried to free herself and run but his clenched fist caught her between the eyes. She pleaded, silent tears streaming down her face. He didn't cast her a second glance. he was past caring.

"You bought yourself a brand new Toyota corolla recently, where is the car?" She managed to say when he released his hold on her. She collapsed on the bed like a pack of cards and sobbed into her palms.

He was shocked to hear her say he bought a car. How did she know? The car was a gift for Bola and Bola had sold it off. "You are a spoilt brat, Wande. I wonder how your children will turn out." With that, he walked out of the room, descended the stairs and went to the living room.

Wande shut the door and leaned against it, Tade's words and action echoing through her mind. She stood there, frozen on her feet for a long time. She was right. Her father's business was losing steam, he was going to run it aground, that she knew.

Downstairs, Tade walked across the living room, his fists clenched at the agony of it all. He ran his fingers through his head and picked up the remote control. He should have divorced her and marry Bola, but the temptation for more money had been almost impossible to resist.

He switched on the tv and sat down on the couch, head bowed. The news was still on, but he was no longer interested. Instead, he focused his thought on Hope's recent revelation about Bola.

He had invested most of his stolen wealth on her and their joint account. The money was meant to give them a landing fortress when they relocate with their kids. The kids, he thought.

Earlier in the day, the doctor had called to inform him that the dna result was in. He planned to pick up tomorrow. He had been anxious, almost couldn't function well since he got the call.

They better be his, he thought as he slept off on the couch.

"Good morning sir."

Ngozi knelt to greet Tade. She was shocked to find him on the couch. Most times when the couple quarreled, Tade slept in another room upstairs, never on the couch in the living room.

Tade squinted, yawned and waved his hand as his way of acknowledging Ngozi's greeting. He stretched, checked the time on the wall clock- 6:05am. The sweet aroma of waffles filled the house. Suddenly, his stomach rumbled. He had not eaten since the doctor called to inform him of the dna result.

He went upstairs to get set for the day. He heard movement in the adjoining room. Wande must be busy taking care of the twins. She never allowed Ngozi to bathe and feed her babies. Most times, she made their food herself. Sometimes, he found himself admiring her, despite her silver spoon background and years of studies abroad. She had cooked all his meals, did his nails, even hand washed his briefs- something Bola will not be caught doing. Bola never bathe her kids or cooked for anybody, not even herself. Why then is it so difficult to love this angelic woman? He thought as he got in the shower.

"Babe, how are you?" Wande asked as they settled to have breakfast on the dining table. Tade had managed to avoid going to the twins' room so he won't see Wande. He felt guilty for punching her on the face and all the insults. How did she tolerate him?

Her eyes were red; she must have cried most part of the night as usual. He noticed a different redness to her left eye. This time, he had given her a red eye.

"I'm fine." He replied curtly. "Where are you going?"

"It's dad's anniversary, remember? I told you we'll say a short prayer for him in church and drop flowers at his grave site. Just like we've been doing." She told him

He merely nodded. The dna was on his mind. "I'll like to be excused this year." He said and stood up. He pushed his chair back with his leg to give his now big frame room to pass.

"You are the chairman, Tade. Every member of the Williams' family and the management staff will be coming as usual. It's just for thirty minutes. Please." She pleaded.

He kissed the twins on their foreheads and left without saying a word. Wande just starred at him as he disappeared through the door.

Josh got out of the car and took his briefcase. Lately, he had become too much like the driver and less of a friend.

"Good morning sir." Major greeted. Josh simply bowed and opened the car door.

"Where are we going?" He asked as he settled behind the wheels.

"St Dominican Specialist hospital."

Josh pushed the gear in R and reversed out of the compound. Putting it back in D, he sped through the busy estate and headed for St Dominican.

The hospital was wedged between a bank and a law hub. It looked more like a five star hotel. Josh pulled up at the car park reserved for patients and their family. He walked briskly to the elevator, while Josh stayed put in the car.

"Hello doc." He took the Dr's outstretched hand in his and shook limply. "I'm so excited."

"It's always like that with paternity tests." The doctor explained to him. "Here." He handed over the thick envelopes lying conspicuously on his table. "You can open them in the quiet of your room."

He quickly grabbed the envelopes and ripped them open before the doctor. Negative starred him in the face. He didn't father any of Bola's children. He felt like his knees could no longer support his weight.

"Are you ok?" Dr Bel moved closer to him. He had not seen the result of the test, the envelopes were delivered from Hope DNA Diagnostics sealed.

"I'm fine, doc." Tade managed to say. He waved the doctor away when he moved to help him sit on the chair. Like a man, he managed to bundle himself on the chair, clutching the envelopes to his chest.

His eyes were red.

"I can prescribe something-----"

"I'm fine, really." He stood up on wobbled legs. There must have been a mix up, he thought.

"How are you feeling now?" Charles asked, feeling his forehead for temperature. His fiancée, Ana stood beside him and held his hand.

Tade turned to face his friends. Josh stood quietly at a corner of his large bedroom. "Sorry, ore." He said after an awkward silence.

Ana sat at the edge of his bed. She was a beautiful, pleasant woman who loved Charles dearly. She worked with an international organization that dealt with child trafficking.

"Uncle Tade, sorry o. We came immediately we heard. I hope you get well soon." Ana patted his limp hand on the bed. As a morally upstanding woman, Charles never told her about Tade's double life. The respect she had for Charles was too much he dared not destroy it.

"How is our patient doing?" Wande asked with a smile as she entered the room with a tray laden with Tade's favorites; from homemade doughnut to freshly squeezed pineapple juice... She was determined to nurse him quickly back to health.

Josh had driven a very weak Tade back home from St. Dominican hospital the previous day. Luckily for Tade, Wande was still away at the remembrance service. He had quickly hidden the dna results in his safe. Wande was shocked to see him looking so weak and without asking any questions, she had proceeded to take care of him at home when he refused to go to the hospital. "It's just stress." He had assured her.

"Thanks for taking care of my friend." Charles told Wande.

"If I don't, who will?" She asked with a smile as she set the tray beside Tade. He had regained most of his strength, thanks to Wande's dedication.

Knowing that Wande was blissfully unaware of what actually happened to him, he ground his teeth and sighed thankfully. What he needed was cigarette to take the edge off his nerves. He considered going out for a stick or two, but he had quit smoking over five years ago. Quitting had been harder than he ever imagined and going back to it after a stick or two scared him.

The dna result had hit him hard where it mattered.

Ana followed Wande to the kitchen, leaving the three guys alone. Charles sat closer to Tade, Josh also moved a step or two closer to his friend cum boss on the bed.

"You have to take it easy, T." Charles advised him. "I don't know what you really want with another woman when you have Wande. But this is not a time to scold you, I just want you to have a sober reflection and face your family." He said.

Tade listened and nodded. Charles sermon on how and why one should stick to one woman was getting boring. His mind was on all the money he saved in bola's name, the building he bought in the kids' name, all his time and effort...

"There may be a mix up with the swabs or the result." Josh offered.

Tade just sighed and prayed silently for a mix up. The first day his parents and siblings set their eyes on Bamidele, Bola's first so, they knew instantly he was his. The resemblance was too much, according to his dad. Even he had noticed the resemblance, How come he is not his son then?

. I so much agree with u, who does dat in this generation wen all guys wants is just sm1 2 av their kids,cuk their meals and do their laundries, only a few has love in dem 4 real. But u knw Tade did it 2 much also he must drink from the sour wine he prepared....... Thanx madam candy for the updates.....
