The following week went by with little or no event, it was obvious to Leila and Maureen that the couple were not on speaking term. Mich ate like a pig. She was always hungry and didn't care to hide it. Joel return from work that morning and found her in bed. He hated the new Mich he was seeing.
'Mich, can we talk?', he asked her as he sat at the edge of the bed.
Mich who was still in her night wear sat up. She saw the tired look on his face and nearly reached out to him, but then, remembered that he lied to her and her heart ached.
'What do you want?'
'I'm sorry I lied to you Mich, you've made your point these past months and I regret my actions. please forgive me'
'You married me for my money, took advantage of my memory loss and lied to me'
'That's not true Mich, why will you think so? I'm not that bad dear, I didn't marry you for your money!'
'I didn't think so, I was told' Mich shot back at him in tears. She felt so hurt and betrayed.
'Well, Mich, Jordan lied to you. He always hated me and...'
'Jordan didn't tell me'
Joel was enraged but he managed to stay calm.
'Who told you?'
'Maureen'
He looked at her in shock? Maureen?
'She said you had to marry me, although you despise me, you love Leila's mother but needed my money'
'What?'
'Let me be Joel, I despise you much more'
Joel ran blindly to Maureen's room. He didn't knock, he just entered and he found her watching an indecent movie. She didn't even see him enter. He walked into the room and stared from his little sister to the rubbish she was watching. When had this sweet innocent girl became so horrible?
'Maureen!', He shouted
She looked up, saw him, and wished for the ground to open up and swallow her. She quickly picked the remote control and changed channel. The two siblings stared at each other. Joel was mad. Was Mich right?
'So this is what you now watch isn't it?'
'Joel I...'
'What did you tell Mich?'
'How?'
'Did you or did you not tell her I married her for her money?'
Maureen began trembling. 'I'm sorry Joel'
A tear ran down her brother's cheek. Maureen is worst than he had thought
' You of all People Maureen? After everything we've been through. You were the genesis of the problem I'm having with Mich. Can't you see that I love her? Can't you see that our silence is killing me? Can't you see that I'm not concentrating? How could you hurt me and you are my sister. Go tell Mich that you lied to her'
'No Joel, I won't. I don't like her, she took you away from me and I won't ever forgive her'
'Goodness Maureen, she didn't snatch me from you. You're my sister and we've been together for like forever. I love Maureen, I love you so much but I can't marry you, I can't make love to you, you're my sister. I love. Mich as a husband, I love you as a brother and I love Leila as a daughter'
'No Joel, send Mich away, please, I will take care of you'
'Really, will you warm my bed?, will you give me the love and companionship I need in a wife?'
'No, but I have a friend you can marry. Jenny will make you a better wife'
Joel only stared at his sister, she was unrepentant. He knows her, she won't tell Mich the truth. She was bend on breaking his marriage and looking at her, he wondered if Mich was safe in the house with Maureen. He felt like beating her up but to what extend? It won't help matters at all and Mich won't like it.
' You're jealous of Mich, but God knows I tried my best. You are selfish, inconsiderate and a liar. I don't ever want you in my room. You are evil Maureen, you will one day get married, pray you don't fall into the wrong family'
He was tired, he just returned from night shift but he hated what was happening. He slowly walked to the room, it was empty, he walked to the bathroom and found his wife throwing up her breakfast. He went to her.
'Are you ill? Let's go to the hospital'
Mich shrugged his hands away, 'don't touch me, you make me sick'
He held her more firmly, Mich wanted to fight him but she didn't have the strength. She hated being pregnant and now she is suffering, She stood up and began sobbing. Joel embraced her while she sobbed. He helped her bath and laid her in bed. Mich wanted to protest but she felt so weak. Joel stared at Mich from head to toe. Maybe she was pregnant, she ate a lot and now she was vomiting, his doctor instinct told him she was pregnant.
'Mich, may I ask you a question?'
'What is it?'
'Are you pregnant?'
'No'
'Are you sure, some women get pregnant without knowing. Should I perform a pregnancy test for you?'
' I said I'm not pregnant'
'Okay then, come with me to the hospital, you are ill'
'I'm okay'
'When last did you see your period?'
'I just finished seeing one yesterday'
Joel said nothing more and he didn't know that Mich planned to terminate the pregnancy.
