Some Stuff I Wish I Knew About UI beforehand There's this thing called the fresher's vibe. You wanna know everything, everyone and everywhere in such a short period of time because trust me,nobody wants to be tagged as a 'bloody, seemingly ignorant young fresher'. Entering UI was a major excitement for me. Finally,i had become a bonafide student of the first and best university in Nigeria....oh wait, till the matriculation. The first two weeks for me were very hectic. First week-General Medical Screening, Second week-Course registrations....and as God would have it,the fresher's orientation was also programmed for the first week. It was bad news to me because I had been looking forward to that orientation thingy the whole time! Just for it to clash with something else...but c'mon, one's gotta do what one has to do;the medical screening stuff became a priority since I heard that it was compulsory and all that. Do you know how many hours I had to stand and wait in an unending queue just to get my blood pressure checked?! Of course, you have no idea! (that wasn't the only thing by the way). If only I had known that one could do Medicals at any level, trust me, I wouldn't have had to bail on any of the orientation packages(which i heard were lots of fun and a source of major enlightenment) plus i wouldn't have been out of whack during course registration as a result of the strenuous screening. Then, there's this TDB(reading Till Day Break) ish too. I moved into my hall and I found out all freshers were agog about it. I began to hear things like 'To perform well in UI;TDB is inevitable' , 'You will get eroded or worse, tsunamized,if you don't do TDB'. That got impaled to my thinking faculty because it was everywhere and as a fresher, you'd believe almost anything a stallite says because.....obviously,they've scaled through everything you're yet to pass through. It took me a few headaches, boggy eyes and a failure in my first test to realize that TDB was definitely not my thing. I almost read my life out the night prior to the test day but when I got to the lecture hall, I suffered from a near 'hangover' and my mind was a complete blank. With blurred vision and fuzzy memory, I just practically shaded the options that looked correct to me. It was until i discussed with people that i discovered that i wasn't the only one in that predicament. Sleep does your brain a whole lot of good because you need an active and a well-relaxed mind, especially during exams. Don't get me wrong, if TDB suits you,go for it. Just make sure you utilize the period that works best for you maximally. Maybe if someone had stressed that, I wouldn't have made the mistakes i did. Okay, there's this really popular science course in UI...people generally perceive it as a really difficult course due to mass failure. You might or might not have heard about it but I won't be mentioning it. Before I even began course registrations, one stallite was like "Oh you're new? There's this course*blah blah blah* you have to be wary of. It's so freaking difficult to pass that course". Even before school resumed that session,my cousin had already drummed it into my ears that I had to pay special attention to the course and that I couldn't afford to fail it. I got gripped by fear at that instant...thinking i might actually fail the course. I began to be pessimistic about understanding it. I would lose interest in class if i didn't get a part of what the lecturer was saying. I didn't fail the course, eventually but I could've performed better considering the fact that there were even tougher courses in the second semester which i dissected quite easily. I wish i knew, earlier, that no course was impossible to have a perfect 7-point score in. It would've alleviated a lot of tension. Some guys will still tell you all sorts..."No,you can't have a first class in this department", "Oh,forget it. That lecturer isn't going to give you anything more than 60 in that course". They're all tall tales! You can break the jinx. "Honestly, the best period to have the time of your life is in 100 level", I was once told. And that's not exactly false, you know. That's a very risky adventure though because, coincidentally, the best period to record a high GP in your programme is 100 level...so,you see,you can't afford to gamble away time. I went for so many fresher's welcoming events, tried different churches, went to almost all the halls of residence to know how their food tastes, spent late nights meeting old friends;making new ones. I had fun, yeah, but at a cost. My academics suffered at its expense but i got back on track before it was too late. You might not be so lucky. If you're a deep socialite, contain yourself. Don't get too carried away by the thrill of becoming a university student. "There'll always be time to have fun. Just wait till the right time",I wish someone had said. To the green peeps in the hauz. I will exhort u all to mingle with your senior ones in your dept. It is time u stopped " I did all in high school successfully alone". The university's voyage is made less taxing with tips and ideas from those who are ahead of u. To the science peeps. Do not go for physics practicals without having the materials lest u waste ample time doing little or nothing To the guys in most sought after depts. Be lowly, every one in the UI is a boss or bossress To the bicycle lovers. If u love riding as I do. Do reach me to get a bicycle that will make your university's days more fun I remain Amb Fitsaint. - 08136898088. 1 Like |
