Good morning, my dear readers. Instead of update I'll serve an excuse this morning. Holiday is over, but I'll still update regularly, just not early momo as usual. I'll mention you guys when I do.

Chapter 23

Tade pulled up in front of his father's bungalow. He got out of the car and walked briskly inside the compound

"Brother." Yemi, his youngest sister hugged him.

"How are you? Why are you not in school?"

"Asup strike o, brother. We are just praying we resume quickly." She sighed as she collected his briefcase and walked with him to the house.

The compound was unusually silent. Obviously, his mother and Titi were not around. He felt relieved.

"Where is papa and Jeremiah?" He asked

"Papa is inside. Brother is not back from work. His wife and children too are not back."

"I thought she quit teaching in that private school."

"Yes, she's with a better one now."

His immediate younger brother, jeremiah and his father were the cool headed ones in the family. Sometimes he wondered if mama actually bore him. He had recently completed the detached BQ behind the house and his wife was already begging him to leave the compound because of mama Johnson. He smiled at the thought of his mother. Madam thatcher, that's what everybody called her.

"Good afternoon sir." He prostrated to greet his father who had woken up and come outside on hearing his voice.

"How was your journey, my son? And how is your wife and the twins?"

"All fine, papa. They sent their greetings."

Papa sat down outside, on his cane chair. He fanned himself with a locally woven hand fan. Sweat drops forming patterns on his chin.

"When are they coming to see me now? It's been a while since I last saw them."

"Soon, sir." Tade forced a smile. He had been discouraging Wande and the kids from coming. He pulled the worn out sofa closer to his father and sat down. Wande had personally seen to the redecorating of the house but papa had retained one or two of the old sofas for his guests.

Papa adjusted in his cane chair, sitting more upright. Tade looked at him as he cleared his throat. He was in for some scolding, that he knew. Yemi brought a glass of water for him. it was almost hot. He sipped a little and handed the cup back.

"No light for three days now." His dad offered an explanation.

"What of your generator?"

Papa smiled. "Generator ke? No petrol, unless Jeremiah is lucky enough to get some today. His wife got some for us at N120/litre yesterday, but we had to give it to the church for the evening service."

Papa and church, he sighed. He became restless. Papa had summoned him on phone two days ago. He had sounded urgent. Now, he waited anxiously for him to speak. He can't be rushed. That, Tade knew.

Papa cleared his throat and spat on the sand near feet, he used his slippers to put sand on it. Tade squeezed his brows. It's hard to believe I was once part of this setting.

Tade, I called to talk to you as a father." He started as soon as Yemi was out of sight. "You need to retrace your steps and embrace your wife." He told him.

Tade was expecting him to say this. This was not the first time. "Has she been calling you to report me again?" He asked angrily.

"At all. But I just have this hunch that all is not well. Besides, your mother told me what happened and knowing your mother and sister, I do not believe their version of the story." He paused to fan himself vigorously for a few seconds. Tade loosed his top three buttons. The heat was too much. "Omotade, I won't like you to chase two rats and kill none eventually. The reports we hear about Bola are so bad." He continued.

"Bola is a good girl. She's not perfect, but neither is your Wande." Tade said in Bola's defense.

Papa Johnson relaxed back in his chair. He had spoken, Tade knew that. He was even lucky he didn't meet his 'holier than thou' younger brother, Jeremiah at home.

"Is that all, papa?" He asked.

"Ha, that's all o. Make that woman happy, she may not be as dumb as she look. Even when you chase a lamb to the wall, it will turn to fight you."


"Thank you, papa. I heard all you said. I will be on my way now." He reached into his pocket and brought out a wad of naira notes. He counted N50k and stretched it towards his father.

"Thank you, my son. But we still have enough money to last the rest of the month. The important thing is for you to heed my advice."

"Ok, just take some papa, I insist." Papa took N5k and returned the rest.

"What of me, brother?" Yemi quickly interrupted the conversation.

Her father looked at her and shook his head. "Like mother like daughter," he said as tade counted N20k for her.

The two walked him outside to his car.

"Call me when you get to ibadan." His father said

"Em, papa, I have a meeting at the governor's office in Oshogbo tomorrow. I'll be sleeping at oshogbo tonight."

Reading through his lies, His father shook his head in disgust.
"Omotade, Olorun ma je koo ka bamo. Eni le ku meji a po fo." His father said, meaning; may God not let you regret. He who chases after two rats at the same time will come empty handed.

"I'm a man, papa. I can manage my life. But thanks for your concern."

"Then marry Bola openly and stop the hanky panky game! It's better you explain the whole thing to Wande than for her to read it in gossip----"

"Ha ba, papa! What kind of advice is that? If he tells Iya ibeji and she sends him away n ko? Me I don't want to follow mama to shop before I pay school fees again o." Yemi cut in.

Tade held the car door open, "Papa, thanks for your advice. I have to go now."

He got in the car and sat behind the wheel. He started the engine and waved back at his sister, Papa's face hard as a stone statue, he felt his eyes pierce his soul.

What a waste of fuel and precious time, he thought as he zoomed off towards Oshogbo.
