I'm disappointed wt ISPON. I was made to understand some years back tht to qualify for membership, what I need is HSE Levels 2 and 3. And I did those courses.

Now I need their membership for some jobs I need to carry out & they are mandating me to do another General HSE to qualify for membership nothwithstanding that I have NEBOSH, other international HSE qualifications, HSE related masters degree and years of HSE experience. Its just as if they are asking me to go back to secondary sch. To me this is just an unnecessary waste of time & money.

I know they must have spent a lot of money in ensuring their bill is passed but that does not mean they should be more concerned in squeezing out money on different fronts in a way tht counters their earlier stance. All professional bodies usually have some levels of their qualification they can knock off in lieu of some other more advanced courses, degrees or experience.

Now tht the ISPON act mandates all HSE professionals to register with them, it is not a good idea to start off with arrogance.

A better and superior alternative would be applying for the membership of the National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN). They are the parent membership of which even ISPON claims to be under.

Check it out www.niscn-ng.com and confirm their superiority from ISPON's website too http://www.nispnigeria.org/

If I do the application and pay the fees, is it their Abuja office I will send the application form and other documents to? Pls how long does it take them to consider an application?

ISPON IS NOT OWNED BY ANY INDIVIDUAL, HEARING YOU SAID THEY PAID HEAVILY I LAUGH, HSE COMPETENCE LEVEL 3 IS HIGHER THAT GENERAL HSE YET THEY WANT YOU TO GET THE LOWER ONE THAT MEANS THEY MEAN WELL FOR YOU AND THE LOWER ONE IS EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE BECAUSE IT IS THE BED ROCK...YOU MAY BE IN 300LEVEL AND YET YOU DON'T HAVE COMPLETE WAEC RESULT, CERTAINLY YOU WILL BE ASK FOR IT SOMEDAY...LOOKING AT YOUR CREDENTIALS GIVES ME JOY BECAUSE YOUR MEMBERSHIP IN ISPON WON'T BE JUST GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP BUT SOMETHING HIGHER , I CAN ASSURE YOU WITH THAT...IT IS QUITE PAINFUL BUT TAKE THE PAIN AND DO IT BECAUSE IT PAYS AT THE END RUN...ISPON IS NOT A BUSINESS VENTURE AS OTHERS AND SO THEY DON'T CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE TO JOIN BUT THE BENEFITS IS JUST TOO OVERWHELMING...IF YOU ARE A MEMBER IN ISPON AND YOU ARE STILL LOOKING FOR JOB THAT MEANS IT IS A GENERATIONAL PROBLEM ...

When I did the HSE courses years back, we were exempted from the General due to our background that tilts towards HSE. It was based on ISPON's advice, not as if I took the decision myself. My issue now is why they shifted ground when it is obvious that I have gone pass the rudimentary HSE level. The only explanation is that the policy is there to rake in more funds for them.

I never implied they are owned by an individual. If you follow the process the National Assembly uses in passing private bills, a lot of lobbying is usually involved. And you cannot lobby our Honourables and Senators with empty hands, if you understand what I mean smiley smiley Also, for the bill to get the attention of the President to be signed to law, a lot of the lower staff of Mr President would have been handsomely taken care of. If you work close to govt, these things wont seem strange to you.

HSE Officers are called CASHES...in other words Community Affairs , Safety Health Environment and security ...It is a kind of unique career path on its own ... You can only start by going to d nearest ISPON branch close to you and check their calendar to see d schedule that fit in ur own timing or d time of d month when you can spare 5 days for the training or 10 days if you have the cash to run it upto d HSE Competence level 3 stage ... You must start wit d General HSE b4 u go for level 3, d genera is also more expensive that level 3 but not higher in grade... It is safer doing it with ISPON because they are backed by an Act ... Called ISPON ACT 2014.... I don't get paid for this neither am i a staff there , am only a member, I used all my cash earned during my NYsc and election money in 2011 to run mine from General to becoming a member... It is called Self-Development , I confess that was the best decision i ever took all my life...D secretary in my branch is nw a safety manager somewhere in EEDC, his take home pay is alarming...also one of our member is also in another branch of PHCN earning large just as a safety officer...six digit salary is d way to go

ISPON DON'T BELIEVE IN MATERIALS LIKE OTHERS DO...YOU DON'T DO SELF STUDY AND COME FOR THEIR EXAMS. WHAT MATTERS MOST IS YOUR ATTENDANCE...THEY DON'T GIVE MATERIALS AHEAD..FOR MEMBERSHIP YOU ALSO NEED TO SIT FOR EXAM AND GO FOR ORAL INTERVIEW...I also doubt if their materials are in softcopy

for you to have passed to levels is an indices that you will pass the exam and interview...IF this haven't changed you will pay close to 45k or less to have it... But wit 25k or so you can start d process of picking d form , sitting for d exams and interviews.... I think d remaining fees are paid during membership induction....

@brainwave,

I really commend you for creating this platform where every stakeholder in the field of safety can make findings, enquiries, advertorials and offer assistance and support to those who want as well.

To add to your comment, alot of folks actually misunderstand NEBOSH to only mean IGC and vice versa. But the fact is that NEBOSH has programs specifically targeted at several careers *just like you also commented*.

There is HSW ( Health, Safety @ work) - this program from NEBOSH is specially designed for starters in the field of safety.

ITC (International Technical Certificate) - is specially designed for existing and prospective technical engineers or those whose career leanings have a thing or two to do with technicals.

IGC (nternational General Certificate) - is mainly designed and relevant for those who got into an organisation with a local safety training and certificate but at some point need to upgrade themselves. I say this because, IGC3 is a part that requires the delegate to do his project work in a company.

HSE PI (Health safety & environment for the process industry) - is specially designed for those who work or would want to build a career in oil & gas, maritime, construction and engineering company. In short, it is useful for those who work or would want to work in any organisation that has anything to do with processing, production, refining, storage, logistics as the name implies

ICC (International Construction certificate) - designed for those who work in construction or building techology outfits , as well as those intending to

The list goes on and on. I wish a lot of Nigerians will make proper findings before pouring out their hard earned cash into enrolling for a wrong program- unquote.

Cheers

Who knows how credible this training center is and can one become a member of ISPON getting trained in HSE level 1-3 with them? Thank you
