jln115: That was the initial sum, an additional $2 Billion was released in the Q4 2014 bringing the total to $6.9 billion. All the procurements so far is from the initial $4.9 billion. The $2 billion would majorly is for the 40 units of mix of mi-35 hinds and Mi 171sh helics from russia and 40 units of JF-17 fighter jets, the army and the navy would share what's left after these procurements. |

xwolverine: Don't take those numbers to the bank. The initial 2014 budget had only $US300million for Cap-Ex. |

xwolverine:Yes some of the procurements are from the initial 4,9 billion and the extra $2 billion would also be for the procurement of weapons! Thats exactly what i said! the $7 Billion includes weapon purchases, where as the SANDF budget of $4,5 billion excludes weopon purchases. For example weapon purchases for the SANDF in the 2015/2016 would be around 2,5 - 3 billion Project Biro(OPVs+IPVs) alone would be more than $1,5 billion then there's still Project Hotel(Hydrographic survey vessel) a heavy torpedo procurement for the Heroine class subs Major refit for Valour class Frigates static communication for the navy A-Dater missile procurement Light and medium transport aircraft procurement new generation mobile communication capability for SAAF thus the SANDF Budget including weapon purchases is close to $7,5 billion. That why i think it would be best if Nigeria shrinks the size of its military, thus focusing on the modernisation of its military aswell as increased focus on training. 1 Like |

jln115: I don't get why people keep saying this, countries with comparable populations to those of Nigeria has 3 times the amount of Active personnel and most of them have 20-35 times more reserves in their military than we do. Out of the top 10 most populated countries in the world the only country that comes close to Nigerias 130,000 Military personell is japan at 230,000, and that country is supposedly not allowed to have an offensive force (and they number about 50 million less than Nigeria). Bangladesh and Pakistan (the countries closest to us in population terms) has 400+ thousand and 600+ thousand respectively. Does it really make sense to shrink a Military that is already this shrunken? Nigeria needs to expand not shrink, with determination an expansion can be done in conjunction with a modernization program. 4 Likes |

Good Points My guy, However, it is impossible to effectively equip 400,000 men with our current budget levels (considering the need to continue to invest in infrastructure, healthcare, education etc.). Our best bet is to accelerate the domestication of our defense needs starting from the low tech, high frequency usage items, that way our little forex can be optimized on the really high tech items. Why should we still import uniforms, body armour, small arms, basic ammunition up to 155mm, first level APCs-battle taxi types, basic missiles e.g. ATGM, light artillery i.e. mortars, Multi launch rocket systems, howitzers and guns up to 105mm, dry rations etc. We just need to make that commitment to build the manufacturing capacity and most things will fall into place. Daverytimes:Yes i agree 100%, expansion can be done in conjecture with a modernization program, BUT to achieve this, one has to have a budget that is conducive to such programs, and unfortunately the Nigerian Defence force and the SANDF budgets arent large enough to incorporate an expansion of a defence force and the modernization of a defence force at the same time,it has to be one or thee other, and the SANDF as leaned towards a smaller yet very modern fighting force, and i personally hope Nigeria do the same. To be honest if you have a small yet modern and well trained force, it will be just as effective(if not more effective) as a larger more outdated force, not only that,it will be much more cost effective aswell. |

Daverytimes: At massive expense to developmental needs (infastructure, healthcare, education et al) A small, highly-professional and highly mobile force is what is called for. A sort of "fire-brigade" that can rush to a crises and put it out. |

patches689: The MRAPs are heavily armed though. 3 DShk HMG's on a single system....... that's a language all terrorists understand. The Ugandans took arming an MRAP to the next level. |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by MikeCZAR: 5:37pm On Mar 25, 2015 |
Henry120: I concur with what @patches is saying. The DShK machine on the vehicles is for supporting the rifle companies, its operator must be able to scan beyond the horizon of the guys on the ground and provide heavy suppressive fire. That's why you'll always find SA army operators of machine gun on the vehicle. carrying binoculars. |

MikeCZAR: I differ. The Soldiers have their High Elevation, as well as considerable firepower to bring down the rain......literally. The Gun Shield although un-usually large, doesn't obscure their panoramic view of the battle space. |
