May I ask what's wrong with your current engine? Because the Atkinson Cycle engine seldom goes bad, at least not to the point of requiring a complete replacement.

I work for a Toyota dealership, and have NEVER replaced a Hybrid engine, in whole or part.

@ Sienna

I do appreciate your response.
The engine is knocking and overheating seriously. The oil in it was seriously diluted with petrol and there was melted metals found when the buttom oil pan was removed.
Spark plugs and two ignition coils were bad.
Oil, ignition coils, coolant, spark plugs have been replaced but it seems that damage had been done to the engine's internal component(s).
I suspect the crankshaft, metals and bearings, as the engine load at idle is close to 60% (Shown on OBD II scanner).
please advise..... should I rework or get a used engine? How can I get one and at what cost?

Regards.

Wow! I'm blushing for hybrids. Only if we have very competent technicians to handle some minor issues they have.

Since its an Atkinson Cycle engine, my suggestion is to buy half a regular 2Az engine and bolt in your Atkinson Cycle Head.

The Atkinson and Otto cycle engines are completely different. You can't run an Otto cycle short engine on an Atkinson head. The Atkinson has offset conrod to piston pins, it's more a compressor than an engine.

The compression ratio of an Otto cycle engine will NOT be compatible with an Atkinson.

My land lady uses an hybrid highlander 1st gen, I had to look at the tag HYBRID a million times to ascertain why on earth this woman will ever buy an hybrid and in abeokuta again, a year plus, the car has never been worked on and drives like a magic carpet.

Someone in my area uses a green camry muscle hybrid, u need to appreciate the cleanness of that ride I think he has used his 2yrs plus though he gives underbridge mechos to work on it but the car still drives like new.

Me no be mechanic o but op I think u will need to first of all find a competent mechanic that will ascertain the extent of damage and profer the appropriate steps to take.

2. You need to sit down and ascertain your financial stand, how much you are willing to stake on the resurrection of that car.

3. You need to prepare your mind that you are driving a rear gem so the engine of that vehicle will have to be pre ordered from obodo oyinbo footing the bill aint gonna be easy.

4. Last but not least, if u have an alternative ride, store the hybrid well till you are financially bouyant to take on the challenge the 2009 engine could cost you close to half a million to ur door step.

Talk to siena he may be of assistance in procuring a reliable engine.

Regular 2az engine + compatible transmission, engine harness, engine ecm.

With this you go back to a regular gasoline.

Looking at roughly 500k.

You can sell your hybrid parts very (valuable)

Its a suggestion. But ill lookout for your engine.

Gazzuzz, add this too:

Fuel pump.
Fuel tank.
ABS.
Brake servo.
Driveshafts.
Instrument cluster.
Centre console.
EPS.
Aircon.

And more I have forgotten to include here. Honestly, this conversion is not worth attempting, unless you're a technician, and carrying out the conversion yourself. The further into the conversion you get (with someone else supplying the labour) the bigger the spending becomes. You'll reach the point of no return, where you've spent so much, you can't afford to abandon the project.

With no end in sight.

Op this is not the first conversion of hybrid to normal gasoline has been discussed the last person who had this problem was using an highlander and by the time the quote came in, he had a long list of things to change which ran into million.

Think of a scenario where you have spent 700k and the car hasn't purred back to life and you start blaming yourself "IF I HAD KNOWN"

If you are adamant in getting it back to life just get the hybrid engine find someone who can get it over there and bring it over here "A word is enough for the wise"

My 1 kobo.

Enter into Abuja, get a very good mechanic to escort you to Zuba spareparts sellers where you can purchase the engine and install it.

Tell the mechanic the hybrid power system is very high voltage and he shouldn't 'kazeemize' the system.

Thanks man!
I will go all the way to Zuba from kwara because of this. I hope the engine will be readily available there.
All these contributions have been useful to me so far.

Zuba guys give warranty of between 2-7 days on engines. Is recommend you bring it in if you have any trusted person in Abuja. If a Zuba seller give you a defective engine, it is easier to send it back same day, get your cash and search else where rather than waiting till next day before trying to get a refund or a swap.

Shine your eyes for there make them no scam you. I'll ask someone (not a zuba part seller) about the price of the engine and let you know
