Ilorin is a small town under the ancient Oyo empire. All most all yoruba land are under the Oyo kingdom. The Oyo kingdom extend to Dahomey and Mahi in benin republic of today and so also some part of Benin kingdom (though the benin kingdom is owned by Oyo) Are Ona Kakanfo is a name given to the overall head of the army all over the nation which is equivalent to Field Marshal nowadays. Are Ona Kakanfo leads the yoruba soldiers to war and it is a must he wins, if he looses the war, he must commit suicide. The Kakanfo commiting suicide after loosing a war was one of many factors that made the Oyo kingdom very strong. Afonja was the Are Ona Kakanfo at that time and he was also the designated ruler of Ilorin. Alaafin of Oyo appoints representatives of himself in every province of the land. Afonja was appointed to rule Ilorin. One way on the other, Afonja rebelled against Alaafin of Oyo and wanted the independence of Ilorin from Oyo. Being a small town, Afonja can't defeat Oyo's enormous army, he had to go and form coalition with the Sokoto caliphate thereby secceding from Oyo empire to Sokoto caliphate. Ilorin was founded by the Yoruba, one of the three largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, in 1450. It became a provincial military headquarters of the ancient Oyo Empire, it later become a Northern Nigeria protectorate when the Shehu Alimi, a descendant of Shehu Usman Dan-Fodio, took control of the city through the spread of Islamic religion. The capital was occupied by the Royal Niger Company in 1897 and its lands incorporated into the British colony of Northern Nigeria in 1900, although the emirate continued to perform ceremonial functions.[2] Although the city retains a strong Islamic influence from the northern incursions, Christianity is now widely practiced by significant portions of other Nigerians originating from other states. The Ilorin Emirate is a traditional state based on the city of Ilorin in Kwara State, Nigeria. It is considered to be one of the Banza Bakwai, or copy-cats of the Hausa Kingdoms. At the start of the 19th century Ilorin was a border town in the northeast of the Oyo Empire, with a mainly Yoruba population but with many Hausa-Fulani immigrants or slaves. It was the headquarters of an Oyo General, Afonja, who rebelled against the empire and helped bring about its collapse with the assistance of the Fulani.[1] The rebellion was powered by Hausa, Nupe and Bornu Moslem slaves.[2] Afonja had been assisted by Salih Janta, also called Shehu Alimi, a leader of the local Fulani. In 1824 Afonja was assassinated and Alimi's son Abdusalami became Emir.[3] Ilorin became an emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate.[1] For some time Ilorin was a major center of the slave trade. In the past slaves had mainly been sent north across the Sahara, but now they were being sent south via the Yoruba lands to the coast to supply demand from the USA, the West Indies, and Brazil. Slaves were taken from the Igbo lands to the east and from conquered Yoruba towns, as well as from areas further to the north, and were traded for cloth and other goods. Ilorin continued to expand southward until it was checked in the 1830s by the growing power of Ibadan, an Oyo successor state. The Ilorin cavalry were ineffective in the jungle to the south, and by the 1850s Ibadan had access to guns from European traders on the coast.[1] The capital was occupied by the Royal Niger Company in 1897 and its lands incorporated into the British colony of Northern Nigeria in 1900, although the emirate continued to perform ceremonial functions.[4] Yoruba run oooo... |
