Uselessness of the SANDF. CAR Pretoria - Operational commanders have painted a picture of chaos around the mission in the Central African Republic that claimed the lives of 15 South African soldiers - putting the blame squarely on the shoulders of the military’s top brass. According to the Sunday Times, logistical blunders and feuding among military bosses led to South Africa’s ‘Mogadishu’ in March last year. However, the military has never revealed before that all the deaths happened in a single ambush on 23 March last year when about 100 paratroopers were being transported in open vehicles through rebel territory. Details came to light after interviews were conducted with survivors during a probe into the incident. The newspaper reports that field commanders had pleaded for armoured personnel carriers two months before the ambush, that they had asked for sniper rifles, Rooivalk attack helicopters, Oryx transport helicopters and a reconnaissance aircraft - none of which were supplied. Troops painted a picture of chaotic supply of weapons and equipment while dual reporting lines contributed to the logistical chaos while force commander Colonel William Dixon gave a horrific description of the lead up to the final assault that claimed the lives of the South Africans. had become a target for reportedly helping CAR President Francois Bozize flee the country into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to the report, top structures were warned by senior SANDF officers that the CAR mission amounted to "suicide". SA Air Force aircraft were also put on standby but due to financial constraints the Gripens were not armed with weapons with an attack capacity. SANDF soldiers reportedly struggled on the ground due to lack of logistics and air support. Soldiers had to ask French parachutists for essential equipment, with only one doctor present with a backpack for medical support. Patches689, mikeczar, agaugust, Jln115, saengine, lezz, naijapikingidi 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Henry120: For them to be inept, tactless and incompetent they would have failed to do something. What did they fail to do? Holding off a force that is at least 5X their size of a day and a half and inflicting massive casualties shows that they are better than anything you have. |
Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Nobody: 4:31pm On Apr 12, 2015 |
MikeCZAR: Nigeria's military doctrine entails the military is diversified. The SANDF is an incompetent, poorly resourced , poorly equipped excuse for a military. We've seen this fact over and over and over. Taking photos at your rand show/exhibitions or when visiting ships come around is absolutely nothing. South-Africa manufactures APC's, but the SANDF cannot equip it troops with these APCs. How many APCs does South-Africa have, it surely isn't up to 500. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Henry120: Doctor =/= medic Again, you can run all the smear all you want - but you fail for one reason: For it to be a defeat, we must have failed to achieve our objectives. Name the objectives we failed to achieve. And from your own artical: 200 fought off 3 000 rebels At the time, Reuters reported that about 200 South African soldiers fought off 3 000 rebels in the assault and the battle lasted between 13 and 18 hours. Shoke says the rebels eventually came with a white flag and negotiated surrender. 1 Like |

Henry120: We cant equip them with APC's? Where do you draw this conclusion from? FYI, the SANDF has: - 1200 Ratels - 810 MRAPS Your own sources show that the SANDF has acheived a level of competancy Nigeria could only dream of. You try so desperatly to make the Battle of Bangui to look like the soldiers failed at their jobs, but the facts are: - 200 men fought off 3 000 - for approximatly a day and a half - they inflicted around 500 casualties - they met their primary objectives: To protect the team of trainer and support staff deployed to the CAR - they met their secondary objectives: to extract a team of paratroopers who were ambushed - they met their anciliary objectives: to hold their base and protect (the majority of) their equipment Only a fool try's to insult 200 men who were forced to withdraw when being attacked by over 3 000. Meanwhile you military was pushed out of 35 towns and cities - you suffered 35 Battle of Banguis, without the bravery of the SANDF And, while Seleka and Boko Haram were armed roughly the same (technicals), we deployed only light infantry - 3000km from home. You lost 35 towns and cities in your own country - with the whole might of the Nigerian Army being unable to stop them. 1 Like |

patches689: Your FOB shows you only have 6 APCs, that's pathetic for a country that makes APCs. That's an FOB that has killed over 2000 terrorists in over 13 attacks. Very effective defensive strategy. Nothing has to change. Yeah, Troops carrying up-graded AK-74's is rusty all right. Radios were transmitting all over the place in that vice documentary. Nigerian owned PMC was hired to help with on the ground trainings for new assets (MI-35M, Army aviation gazelle helicopters, IFV's). The government never denied this. |

patches689: A medic for over 400 troops you classless liar. Now, he says I'm running a smear campaign...... LOL!! Deal with the facts, the SANDF is an incompetent, poorly organised pitiful, poorly trained, poorly equipped force. Not according to reuters who were on the ground. This is what Reuters, UN, the BBC said "A source with the United Nations in Bangui said the South Africans had asked for assistance from French forces to help them leave the country." http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE92M0AU20130324?irpc=932 "Bangui - South African soldiers in the Central African Republic are seeking safe passage to the airport after taking heavy losses during fighting with Seleka rebels, Reuters reports." "Amy Martin of the UN's humanitarian agency, OCHA, told the BBC World Service that the SA troops had retreated to their barracks and were seeking safe passage to the airport." "Seleka spokesperson Eric Massi said the rebels had broken through a line of South African soldiers during their push into the city." 1 Like |
