Well actually...I've always wondered what it means when a country is called a republic
I.E. Nigeria gained independence in 1960 but became a republic in 1963...what's the difference?

to me, independence is basically on freedom from external control...wyl republic is more like a democratic state where d ppl are to vote for a centralized governmnt, more like a presidential system of govmnt.

Robinz,lemme explain in a lay man way; a republic is a country that select and elect whom they want to rule them. We became a republic in 1963 cox we stopped answering to the queen of england.
Due to the coup detat that brought some juntas(military dictators) to power, we lost the republican feature; and it was redeemed in 1979 which is the second republic. Military took over again and we lost it. We had it again in 1989 and 1999, the third and fourth republic respectively. We are in the fourth republic now, boss.

indpendence free from being ruled over by white. Republic: freedom from monarchymi.e family royalty dynasty rulership.e.g malaysian.thatmeans we are free to elect our president(democracy)
