The Ban On Employment Of Under-12 House-Helps In Nigeria by Nobody: 7:32am On Apr 13, 2015 |
In a long overdue move, the Federal Government has prohibited the employment of children below the age of 12 as domestic helps in a new Act signed by President Goodluck Jonathan. Christened the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015, the new law recommends a prison term of two years and a possible fine for violators. The law also prohibits the exploitation of domestic helps who are under 18 years. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=115135 10 Likes 1 Share |

Its a good step in the right direction. Our lawmakers should also be pro-active, instead of being reactive to national issues. The law was passed because of the incessant abuse of this minors, this law should have been even before now. 2 Likes 1 Share |

They wont call them their maid rather cousin or niece that they want to help since their biological parent could not give them proper up bringing. So i think the law should be that no underage should live outside their parent care. And govt should make life more easy. 12 Likes |

Ok so does that mean its legal to employ a 13 yr old which is still just as bad. The age limit should be 18 not 12. 24 Likes |

enoqueen:Hmm, that will be a difficult thing to do. U know not all children staying under guradians get abused, so if the govt prohibits such, twill make life diff for parents that can't afford to bring up their child. I think it should be that we have something like social service whatnot practised in other coubtries, so an child being abused can go report there or any adult that gets to know a child is being abused can go report and they'll look into d matter and take the child away from their care. 11 Likes |

Excellent. The people who would make up the next generation should be allowed to go to school and develop themselves intellectualy, not washing plates and cleaning baby diapers at that age. |

We have sufficient laws in Nigeria. Enforcement has always been the problem. With all the child labour laws, we still see kids hawking on the streets even during school hours. 7 Likes 1 Share |

Most of these girls(whether 12 years or above) are given out as house helps by their parents/guardians due to economic hardship in order to ease the burden on the family. I believe that best ways to prevent this are 1. People should give birth to the number of kids they can afford to take care of. A good number (not all) of these house helps come from homes with 5 or more children. And most times, their parents are not financially capable of taking care of the needs of all of them. 2. The govt. should work on improving the standard of living of the people so that families can afford to take care of their children the way they should. This has been said many times already but we will keep repeating it until it is achieved. 3. There should be thorough enforcement of laws on child rights. Laws are useless and powerless unless enforced. 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Its easy to pass laws prohibiting....but hard to pass laws and policies raising the living standards of the ordinary Nigerians. Why not bann the marriage of under age children? Fvcking hypocrites.. |

The problem is that some children have no guardians, they are orphans andin other to help them, people have no choice than to employ them as house help. By the way, government should extent the years to be at least 15yrs. 1 Like |
