Lagos State Governorship Elections. Where Did Jimi Agbaje Go Wrong? by scholes23(m): 9:03am On Apr 14, 2015 |
The Lagos State Governorship election held on the 11th of April 2015 which went in favour of APC's Akinwunmi Ambode really took most Lagosians by surprise cos a good number of Lagosians pirferred the latter over the former. JK as we all know was people's favourite and judging from people's opinion, they'll rather vote for personality rather than party. And now the question is, where did JK go wrong? |

Obviously most Lagosians did not prefer Jimi considering that even his neighbors chose Ambode over him. When a man loses his own unit that shows you he isn't as popular as he would have people believe . Ambode a new comer to politics delivered not just his PU but the whole of Épé for both elections while Jimi who has been in politics for decades could not deliver even his PU ( during both elections) The people who claimed to love Jimi are mostly the elite majority of whom were supporting him on Facebook and Twitter but had no PVCs and the ones who did couldn't even be bothered to come out. Ambode on the other hand had grassroot supporters who voted. Elections are not won with people claiming to love you with their mouths 9 Likes |

Fashola's reputation, the idea of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" and APC is in power in Abuja. 3 Likes |

1. People in Lagos wanted the completion of unfinished projects... 2. A large number of Lagos voters despised PDP, Bode George, Ogunlewe and co. 3. Jimi should have stuck to a campaign of issues, instead he overestimated the importance of Igbo votes. 8 Likes |

scholes23: His crime was to ask non-Yorubas in the state particularly the Igbos for votes. They succeeded in converting his name to Jimi Okeshuku Agbaje thereby playing an Igbo vs Yoruba game in Lagos. The election ended up being about proving the ownership of Lagos and of course, the Yorubas carried the day having the superior numbers. Everything that happened in the Oba's palace was rehearsed and well planned by the APC, Oba and the Igbo Ezes in Lagos. The only way Ambode could beat Agbaje was to pitch the Yoruba against the Igbo and that is exactly what happened. Who recorded the whole thing and why was it leaked to the public? If this whole Oba episode had not happened, a lot of Yorubas would have voted for Agbaje and it was common knowledge that the Igbos would vote in block for Agbaje being their party man. The APC saw this and decided to play the ethnic card which worked perfectly. They know our people well and that we will shout and bring down heaven when we see the video just like we reacted during the deportation saga. Alot of Yorubas who initially wanted to vote for Agbaje ended up changing their mind to vote for Ambode because they saw it as Yoruba vs Igbo and they wanted to prove to the Igbo their dominance in Lagos. The whole drowning in Lagoon speech was a carefully written and acted script. All this was part of Tinubu's game, wake up! Don't be surprised to go to the Oba's palace and find him drinking with those Igbo Ezes. 3 Likes |

dridowu: How could Lagosians be tired of a party that has never ruled them? |
Re: Lagos State Governorship Elections. Where Did Jimi Agbaje Go Wrong? by Gbawe: 12:45pm On Apr 14, 2015 |
Most Lagosians cannot trust the PDP. That was the main factor that worked against Agbaje. He should also have refrained from trying to court votes divisively by whipping up ethnic sentiments. He pitched the Yorubas and igbos against each other and both ethnic group felt they had a 'supremacy' point to prove. Unfortunately, Agbaje will continue with his life of affluence and privilege while the ethnic 'unrest' he has caused has now changed Lagos for good and will continue troubling the State for many years to come. 2 Likes |

My PU: Govrship APC(my party) 299, PDP 79. HOA APC 265, PDP 70. 1. Don't underestimate the power of APC in Lagos State no matter how close of popular u think u are. 2. One man has killed PDP from the top, and we are too enlightening in Lagos to give life back to her. 3. Yorubas stood behind their Oba at the late hour of the election. 4. Jimi isn't politically trained to outwit his ogas like Tinubu and co. 5. Etc. |

Just unfortunate that Agbaje is now tainted as an Igbo ethnic politician! Imagine him promising to make an Eze Igbo a First Class Chief in Lagos. Except he was deceiving the Igbo he should know that The Igbo are a fiercely Republican and autonomous people who will not accept the overlordship of a single person as Eze all over Lagos Igbo- confusion will ensue! Just wondering how much of Igbo he can speak - in case he needs to try making a run for Governorship in any of the eastern states! Shame to the apostles of ethnic politics playing us against one another! Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa et al are Nigerians who deserve to vote and be voted for ANYWHERE in the country. It remains to be said however that it is an unreasonable and unfair thing to do to hit your host community under the belt by playing the ethnic card in election time when you have not been discriminated against in enjoying the dividend of democracy! The obvious attempt by Igbos at doing so in this elections is unfortunate and will only serve a notice on the Yoruba to be wary of the Igbo as a people nursing an agenda to take over their host community. The Igbo must consciously set out to put the Yoruba (their hosts in Lagos) at ease by correcting that impression. "There is no doubt at all that there is a strand in contemporary Igbo behaviour that can offend; by its noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness" .............Chinua Achebe. 1 Like |
