good day my fellow nairalanderz..
please i have a challenge about my course that got a fight argument with my counterpart discipline.
well, let me start by introducing my self...

my name is john,a student of banking and finance 200lev in nnamdi azikwe university,awka.nigeria.

just yesterday i had a big argument with an accounting student that almost got the whole roof shake and fell..and the argument was that" a bsc holder of banking and finance does not have an edge in the oil industry compare to accounting bsc counterpart"..
thus, the argument made got me infuriated and disgusted that i have to blame all to we nigerian that is so blind to see wat the future holds..

i mean how can you say banking 1st degree holder cant work in the oil industry except you have accountancy degree?..that a banking degree holder is only restricted to bank job and nothing else.

now my question is:how is banking and finance difference to an accountant? that a banking degree holder cant work in an oil industry..after all we both study statistics, account and the likes.and do you know what it takes to be a finance degree holder that so many organisation seek to have..

accountancy is overrated in nigeria due to their professionalism, and besides any one can become an accountant with just having an ican certificate..

please nairalanders,i want your view about this..experience accountant and banker in the nigeria industry should please air their view on this issue..i need to know the fountain/origin of this professions to know what to do before i graduate..

please experience accountant i need your view..thankz!

In the first place it does not make sense to spend so much time and energy in such arguement

Both of you are as qualified to work in the oil industry depending on the department and job function . While the accountant may be more qualified to do oil taxation. Costing etc, the banking guy will be more qualified to handle things like financial analysis, hedging, etc.
I remember when I used to work in the bank and we had engineers working as credit officers.
Here in the US for example chemists work in investment banks analyzing and following pharmaceutical companies
Do what you have passion for and let God do the rest. Good luck to you both

wow! i love this piece coming out from a sincere man..bro i do really appreciate.

but wait,is it that a finance holder of 1st degree fit into many organisation as assumed by you or is restricted to some industry?.

80% of people have met always emphasize that banking degree is just restricted to bank and no other company.
and please are you talking from experience?…thankz!

Banking degree is not restrictive. It is as broad as majoring in finance. All you need is a foot hold to get in somewhere then you begin to broaden your scope by taking some professional exams either in areas like risk management ( operational, credit or financial)
